Based near Schweinfurt, German adjustable exhaust system manufacturer Kesstech (founded in 1984 by Roland Kess), a subsidiary of The Motorcycle Equipment Company (MEC) group, has now filed bankruptcy, having previously filed for insolvency protection under the German 'Self Administration' court procedures. MEC, which also operates the Austrian Cult-Werk accessories brand, is a "company that combines brands to create a range of high-quality motorcycle equipment parts". Originators of the adjustable exhausts sound concept, Kesstech was once a favourite among Harley dealers in particular but has faced strong competition for the sound adjustment niche. Kesstech products were made in Germany and EC type approved for Harley-Davidson, Indian Motorcycle, and BMW motorcycles; www.kesstech.de

The Drag Specialties Louisville NVP Expo in January saw control cable, hose and handlebar specialist Magnum Shielding unveil an  update in styles and construction for its already popular handlebars. Magnum has  traditionally made its handlebars from steel,  but has now upped its game to using stainless steel and then Chroming or Black Powder coating for a rust resistant and very durable finish. According to  Magnum Engineer, Cameron Hurwitz,"the  goal is to produce is precision formed bar with no noticeable necking at the bends,  minimal internal wire obstruction and artisan quality weld fillets throughout. This is what makes for a truly amazing bar." They are available in several of Magnum's best-selling designs, including the Crusader Bagger, Top Gun T-Bar, Caliber Ape and Bagger and Mach 1.25 Moto, although the company's patented Viking Bagger and Ape bars still remain very popular; www.magnumshielding.com

The MIC reports that Maryland is considering a total ban on consumer products containing PFAS chemicals (polyfluoroalkyl substances) - a group of thousands of synthetic chemicals known as "forever chemicals". Scott Schloegel, MIC Senior Vice President of Government Relations stated that "roughly a year from now, as drafted the bill would be disastrous for powersports sales. A wide range of powersports products contain PFAS chemicals - found in or used to produce products such as riding gear, vehicle components resistant to heat, fuel, and chemicals, as well as semiconductors and chrome plating. In many of those products the use of PFAS is currently unavoidable. This measure would mean an end to sales for all manner of products inside Maryland dealerships." Both California and Maryland recently placed restrictions on products in which PFAS are deliberately used.

The company did reduce its net losses for the quarter, recording a loss of $56.4m in the Q4 '24, compared to a loss of $168.5m in Q4 '23. The company's net loss for the year was "just" $78.6m, compared to a net loss of $215.5m for 2023. The self-styled 'Omni Channel' powersports vehicle retailer saw pre-owned powersports unit sales decrease for the fourth quarter and full year 2024. Hero Extends Harley-Davidson Deal

By Ben Purvis

Harley-Davidson struck a licencing deal with Indian bike-making behemoth Hero back in 2020, one that allowed Hero to develop, manufacture and market a Harley-badged motorcycle in its home market. Now that deal is being extended to cover additional bikes and international sales in certain markets.

The original Hero-made Harley was the X440, launched in 2023 and sold alongside other H-D models in India, where Hero also took on the US brand's sales network after H-D decided to close its own Indian subsidiary back in 2020.

That deal has been expanded to include more Hero-developed machines, with the Indian company issuing a press release stating: "The Company has extended its partnership with Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. in order to expand the H-D X440 into new variants as well as to develop a new motorcycle for both domestic and select international markets."

The addition of 'select' international markets will be of interest to Harley dealers who have been crying out for a more affordable, entry-level model to tempt customers into their showrooms

While Hero's focus has been on India, where it sold the vast majority of the 5.9 million bikes it made in 2024, the brand has started to turn an eye to international markets - already having an R&D facility in Munich, Germany, and announcing its intention to expand into Europe and the UK in the second half of 2025. It makes its own variant of the Harley X440, the Mavrick 440, sharing an identical SOHC, air-cooled single and a similar chassis. If that bike proves to be an export success, it's clear that the Harley X440 could also be appealing to customers outside India.

The additional variants of the X440 will use the same engine but the company's announcement that it will also develop a 'new motorcycle' suggest it has another power unit on the way - perhaps one that will fill the void in the range between the X440 single and Harley's smallest homegrown engine, the 975 cc V-twin in the Nightster now being produced for all global markets in Thailand.

MK-Series 'B' Crankcases for M-8 Softail Models

Another recent addition to the S&S Cycles family of Crankcase upgrades for M-8 engines, these 'biggest yet' beefed up precision machined power-builder designs are their new MK-Series 'B' Crankcases for "building massive power, reliably."

Designed to be paired with S&S 136" cylinders and a 4 5/8" Stroker Crank they scrape more oil that the stock case designs they upgrade - with a large volume oil pump and large volume sump - allowing for the installation of larger bore kits yet fitting the stock frame without modification.

"Baggers aren't the only M-8s pushing massive performance numbers - Softails are right on their heels and doing it in a lighter, more agile chassis. These built engines are begging for a stronger base to build from, and our MK-Series 'B' cases are just the solution."

The stock deck height and close-fitting oil scraper are machined - the stock design that these replace are cast.

Trask Performance

Assassin Turbo Kit

Last month we featured the new generation of modular (just add exhaust of choice) Trask XS Turbo systems. However, there was one, top-of-the-line Turbo application that we decided to hold back for its own moment in the spotlight - the awesome and mega powerful 'Assasin' Turbo Kit seen here.

Trask XS Turbo system kits are an evolution of the Trask Tornado kit that was created exclusively for Drag Specialties - which had been the first to use Trask's new V-Band technology.

Modestly described as living in the same 40-50% power increase territory as the other new XS systems, the Assassin Turbo Kit is a genuine Stage-2 Turbo for 117" and larger engines.

"The perfect fusion of craftsmanship, performance, and design, each 'Assasin' is built to order with precision and care - each being handcrafted by skilled and experienced fabricators in Trask's new fully integrated 50,000 sq ft 'Palace of Power' at Phoenix, Arizona.

"Every turbo system is pie-cut, back-purged, and TIG-welded by hand, ensuring not only structural integrity but also an artistic finish that complements the bike's style. Designed for riders who demand both exceptional power and show-stopping aesthetics, it delivers impressive horsepower and torque gains. The Assassin Turbo Kit is more than just a performance upgrade - it's a statement."

Trask's V-Band assemblies reduce installation times, eliminate gaskets, and ensure better airflow with leak-free connections and minimal maintenance. "These kits are genuinely modular as they offer the flexibility to choose from multiple exhaust options, allowing riders to customize their style while maintaining top-tier performance."

Finished in brushed stainless with black compatible models include '02-'16 FL Twin Cam, '02-'17 Softail Twin Cam, '04-'17 Dyna, '17-'24 FL M-8 and '18-'24 Softail M-8.

"These kits also offer the flexibility to choose from multiple exhaust options, allowing riders to customize their style while maintaining top-tier performance. Trask Performance continues to lead the industry, combining power, reliability, and innovation."

With 25 years of experience and three consecutive Bagger Racing League championships, including being the only turbocharged bike to conquer the Laguna Seca track, Trask's credentials are unmatched.

On the M-8 Softail Trask saw maximum power of 166.49 hp at 6,180 rpm and Max Torque of 157.78 ft lbs at 3,339 rpm.

Selecting the right turbo kit is simple. Two stages cover all Delphi EFI Harley-Davidson models from 2002-2017 Twin Cams to 2017-2024 M8 motors:

Stage 1 Turbo: For 88"-117" and 1,200cc engines.

Stage 2 Turbo: For 117"+ motors, including Big Bore builds for those seeking extreme power.

Expect a 40-50% boost in horsepower and torque on 8 lbs of boost using 91 octane pump gas, depending on the configuration, with even higher gains on race fuel and increased boost.

After choosing the appropriate stage, simply select from a range of tailpipes - Assault, Fury, and OG - and a finish: brushed stainless steel with black billet, polished, or black on black.

Trask can also accommodate custom options for those wanting to stand out even more on the road.

The new Trask HQ is 50,000 sq ft, with 35 employees - and growing.

Honda

Honda Outlines Its Motorcycle Strategy

By Ben Purvis

Honda believes that the global motorcycle market is set to grow from 50 million to 60 million sales per year by 2030 and has set out a strategy that it hopes will see the brand's share of that market expand to 50% of the total.

At the moment, Honda sells 20.2 million bikes per year globally, accounting for 40% of the overall market, with Asia responsible for the majority of those sales - 17.17 million, or 85% - while the high-end markets of Japan, Europe and the USA make up a mere 6% of the company's bike sales at 1.2 million units. The long-term ambition of expanding to a 50% share of a larger, 60-million bike market would mean Honda needs to increase its global sales to 30 million bikes per year.

Honda believes that the main growth area will be an area the company calls the 'Global South' - encompassing Southwest Asia, which includes India, plus Indonesia, the Philippines, and Central and South American countries. The projected 60 million-strong 2030 market includes electric bikes as well as conventional ones, with battery-powered machines becoming increasingly important.

Specifically looking at Europe, Honda's plan is to expand its system of using common platforms as the basis of multiple models. It's already the master of that art, with various common-platform model ranges in its lineup - for example, the Africa Twin platform, which also forms the basis of the NT1100 (and in Japan the Hawk 1100) - and more recently the CB750 platform used underneath the CB750 Hornet and XL750 Transalp. It's a system that allows a broad model range while minimising R&D and production expense, vital given the relatively small proportion of sales that the European bikes account for in Honda's global picture.

The new V3 engine complete with an electric supercharger that was shown inside a trellis-style frame at EICMA last year previewed another common platform that's set to underpin multiple models in the future, according to Honda.

Electric bikes is another area that the company is focusing on despite disappointing - and falling - sales of electric bikes in European markets. Honda's plan is to have 30 electric bikes in its global lineup by 2030, accounting for 4 million sales. Honda's electric plan revolves around two separate pillars: one is the concept of swappable, standardised batteries, used in small, low-performance bikes and scooters - Honda already has battery-swap networks established in Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and India - the other is the more European-focused idea of larger electric bikes with fixed batteries.

To ensure the success of electric bikes, Honda wants to bring costs down so the total cost of owning an electric bike, over a period of three years, is equivalent to the same period of owning an ICE bike. That indicates initial purchase costs will remain higher, but the overall savings from cheaper energy will be used to bring the ownership costs level with conventional machines.

As part of its efforts to make electric vehicles - both two and four-wheeled - more appealing, Honda began operation of its pilot plant manufacturing all-solid-state batteries in January. The factory isn't making batteries for production vehicles yet, but it's verifying the production methods at full scale, so once perfected and proven it's possible to rapidly expand. All-solid-state batteries are a potential game-changer, replacing the liquid electrolyte used in existing li-ion cells with a solid one, they allow batteries to be smaller and more energy-dense. Because there's no flammable liquid electrolyte inside - it's replaced with a solid one, allowing the electrodes to be closer together without needing a separator layer - they can be run hotter than existing designs, in turn making them faster-charging.

Solid state batteries can also be made without using as many rare materials as existing li-ion designs, and thanks to the reduced fire risk, they don't need the same heavy, bulky protective cases. For electric bikes, where the size, weight and cost of the battery make up a larger proportion of the whole vehicle than in electric cars, the benefits of cheaper, smaller, lighter and more powerful batteries will be even more keenly felt.

Honda expects solid-state batteries to start appearing in production vehicles in the latter part of this decade.

As a final note, Honda expects to hit a key milestone of cumulative global motorcycle production this year, with the 500,000,000th bike to wear the Honda badge since 1948 rolling off one of its production lines at some point in 2025.

Souo

Souo Flat Eight Tourer Makes its Western Debut

By Ben Purvis

When Chinese car-making giant Great Wall Motors launched its first two-wheeled machine last year it instantly became the biggest and most high-tech bike yet to emerge from the country and it sprang another surprise by giving the Souo S2000 its western hemisphere debut CES in Las Vegas in January.

In case you missed it, Souo is Great Wall's newly-minted motorcycle brand, and while China's other bike makers have worked their way up from small single-cylinder machines to bigger, multi-cylinder bikes, Souo has leapfrogged them all - as well as every other bike maker on the planet - by starting out with an eight-cylinder machine.

The S2000 is clearly inspired by the Honda Gold Wing, something the company readily admits: its philosophy is to start with the most capable tourer on the market and then to take everything up a notch or two. As a result, it clocks in at 1,999 cc and 152 hp compared to the Gold Wing's 1,833 cc and 125 hp, with a flat-eight engine rather than the Honda's flat six, double overhead cams instead of a single cam per bank, and an eight-speed-plus-reverse dual-clutch semi-auto transmission where Honda uses seven speeds.

All that is bolted to a cast alloy chassis with a Hossack-style girder front end, again similar to the Honda's, and garnished with tech including a huge 12.3-inch touchscreen display using the latest Snapdragon 8155 automotive CPU (it's first appearance in a bike), rear-facing radar sensors for blind-spot monitoring, electronic suspension and just about every other luxury that can be imagined on a bike.

Its appearance at CES in January came immediately after Souo passed the major milestone of delivering the first examples of the bike to customers. Initially the brand sold a batch of 288 bikes in China, with Great Wall CEO Wei Jianjun personally presenting the keys to some of the customers that opted to pick their machines up from the new brand's dedicated handover showroom.

Although Souo hasn't made an official announcement about how it will go about offering the S2000 and future models, which will include a cruiser based on the same flat-eight engine, outside China, the company has stated that its ambitions are global. Its presence at CES in the States, where the Souo machines were displayed alongside an array of Great Wall cars and trucks that are already being offered internationally, was a clear indication that Souo - which means 'Soul' - is not planning to remain a China-only brand for long.

Klock Werks

Klock Tire Hugger Front Fender Fit Kit

As an alternate to traditional "full coverage" fender styles, Mitchell, SD based Klock Werks founder Brian Klock says: "Take a look at our Tire Hugger Series Front Fender options for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Designed to hug the tire closely to show off the wheel, these direct bolt-on replacement fenders will dramatically change the look of any bike."

All Klock Werks front fenders are stamped from 14-gauge steel using precision, deep-draw stamping technology that ensures a consistently smooth and flawless finish, minimizing bodywork. The 14-gauge stamped steel is rigid enough to act as a fork brace.

Laser cut using five-axis laser technology ensures accurate fitment for direct bolt-on installation. "We then go the extra mile to add e-coat (electro-static coating), a process that minimizes the need for bodywork and continues to resist rust and corrosion even after it's painted," says Brian.

"Painters love our fenders and your customers will too." Fitments are available for 16", 17", 18", 19" (130/60-19 tire) or 21" wheels (120/70-21 and 130/60-21 tire). If you're utilizing Arlen Ness Hot Legs, you'll simply need to obtain Hot Legs mounting blocks from an alternative supplier."

Klock Werks Front Fender Mounting Blocks are machined from billet aluminum and available in a Satin (Raw) finish. "They are designed to provide perfect spacing for easy installation of the Tire Hugger Front Fender." The 'Fit Kit' includes front fender, Satin (Raw) mounting blocks and all necessary hardware.

Harley-Davidson

Hero Extends Harley-Davidson Deal

By Ben Purvis

Harley-Davidson struck a licencing deal with Indian bike-making behemoth Hero back in 2020 that allowed Hero to develop, manufacture and market a Harley-badged motorcycle in its home market. Now that deal is being extended to cover additional bikes and international sales in certain markets.

The original Hero-made Harley was the X440, launched in 2023 and sold alongside other Harley-Davidson models in India, where Hero also took on the US brand's sales network after H-D decided to close its own Indian subsidiary back in 2020.

Now the deal with Harley has been expanded to include more Hero-developed machines, with the Indian company issuing a press release stating: "The Company has extended its partnership with Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Inc. in order to expand the Harley-Davidson X440 into new variants as well as to develop a new motorcycle for both domestic and select international markets."

The addition of 'select' international markets will be of interest to Harley-Davidson dealers who have been crying out for a more affordable, entry-level model to tempt customers into the fold. The recent success in Europe of bikes like Triumph's Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, as well as bikes like Royal Enfield's affordable singles, shows that there's a strong market for such bikes, with many of the customers being existing riders either trading down from larger bikes or adding an additional machine to their garage. The Triumphs, like the Royal Enfields, are made in India, and were developed with the help of KTM business partner Bajaj. Their success shows that customers aren't afraid to spend their money on Indian-made machines.

News Briefs

November 2024 saw Arctic Cat announce layoffs and a production pause at its Thief River Falls ATV, UTV and Snowmobile facility in Minnesota. The company said at that stage that it planned to restart production in Q1 2025 and stressed that it is not shutting the plant down permanently. However, only a month later parent company Textron stated that "upon completion of limited production runs to satisfy consumer commitments, production of powersports products will be paused indefinitely in the first half of 2025" with the owner looking for a buyer for its entire Arctic Cat subsidiary. This would likely also involve the St. Cloud Mn. facility. Hobbled by excess inventory, Arctic Cat sold to Textron for $247m in 2017. In January 2025 Textron reported 2024 sales of $13.7bn and forecast $14.7bn for 2025. Historically best known as a defence contractor, Providence, RI based Textron additionally owns brands such as Bell Helicopters, Cessna and Beechcraft.

The MRF reports that an important study has been released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) regarding high-visibility clothing. According to the IIHS, "clothing that makes pedestrians stand out to human drivers may make them invisible to automated crash prevention systems." Test dummies wearing clothing with features like reflective strips were invisible to technology designed to prevent crashes. While the tests were conducted using pedestrian test dummies, it's not hard to extrapolate what these findings might mean to motorcyclists. Some bikers choose to wear high-visibility clothing, in an attempt to make themselves more visible.

Based in southern California since 1959, Honda Motor Co. Inc. is among the motorcycle industry businesses that have stepped up to support those who have suffered in the devastating LA fires, donating $500,000 in disaster relief funds to the American Red Cross.

Despite its present difficulties (as a subsidiary of KTM) Varese, Italy based MV AGUSTA is still trying to keep its flag flying - marking the 80th anniversary of its founding as a motorcycle manufacturer in January 1945. Banned from returning to the airplane manufacturing industry in which it had made its name during the inter-war years, the company became a legendary presence on the racetracks of the 1950s and 1960s. MV has an unmatched record of 75 world titles to its name (38 riders), the first MV Agusta-branded motorcycle was officially launched in the fall of 1945 and went down in history as the MV 98. Count Domenico Agusta had a knack for selecting the best riders, many of whom became motorcycling legends: Franco Bertoni, MV Agusta's first rider, followed by Arcisio Artesiani, Carlo Ubbiali ("The Flying Chinaman"), Leslie Graham, Cecil Sandford, Fortunato Libanori, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood, Gianfranco Bonera, Giacomo Agostini and Phil Read. The partnership between MV Agusta and Giacomo Agostini remains one of the most famous in motorcycling history: during his MV career "Ago" won 13 world titles, 18 Italian championships, and 10 Tourist Trophies, becoming the most successful rider in motorcycling history.

December 2024 saw Senators James Risch (R-ID), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), and Ted Budd (R-NC) introduce the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) Full Funding Act of 2024 to correct inadequate annual program funding - increasing it from $84m to $281m. The AMA helped create the RTP in the early 1990s. It uses federal gasoline tax revenue attributed to motorized off-highway recreational vehicles (OHRV) to fund, develop, and maintain trail infrastructure across the USA. As of 2023, the program has awarded over $1.6bn to over 25,000 trail projects across the US over the three decades - despite the fact that OHRV enthusiasts have paid nearly $9bn in gas tax during the same period. As at late January 2025, it is unclear whether this is one of the $2tn of Federal funding streams that have been suspended pending review.

Brembo preliminary results report revenues "stable" at € 3,841.2m with EBITDA at € 661.6m (17.2%). The results are in line with market guidance.

ShiftFX

ShiftFX develops second-generation semi-auto

By Ben Purvis

Semi-automatic transmissions are finally coming of age with manufacturers including KTM, BMW and Yamaha adding them for 2025. Now a company that was a pioneer in the field is developing a simplified design that could make semi-autos cheaper for manufacturers to adopt.

Canada's ShiftFX has been working on the idea of automated manual transmissions for the best part of two decades. It has created a system similar in concept to those being adopted today by BMW and Yamaha - with electro-mechanical actuators for the clutch and shift drum, operated by its own control unit - as far back as 2017.

To do so, the company developed a unique, fast-acting, high-force linear actuator for the clutch that has been adopted in other industries, leading to the creation of a subsidiary company, Kinitics Automation, to supply them. It also developed an advanced system to monitor the feedback from the motor operating the shift drum, allowing ShiftFX to accurately position the drum without the need for the ratcheting system used in a conventional manual transmission.

"simplified transmission from a pioneer in the field"

Now the company has patented a new version of the idea that eliminates the need for a clutch actuator entirely, adopting a centrifugal clutch and modifying the gearshift to provide a 'neutral' position between every gear, to allow for perfect rev matching before the next ratio is engaged.

While KTM's new AMT transmission also does away with the clutch actuator and uses a centrifugal clutch, its system appears to act more like a conventional up/down quickshifter - interrupting the ignition and modulating the throttle to help slip between ratios.

ShiftFX's new design makes that happen more easily and smoothly. A normal gearbox uses a star indexer cam, which has a detent for each gear position and a peak between them to prevent the gearbox hitting false neutrals between ratios. ShiftFX's new design modifies this star indexer to have an additional detent between every gear to intentionally allow the box to briefly stop in a neutral halfway through each gear shift.

Combined with the company's clever monitoring of the DC shift motor's position, it means the box can stop in a neutral for exactly the time needed for the input and output speeds of the next ratio to be matched, letting the transmission slide into the next gear more smoothly.

ShiftFX isn't intending to sell the system to individuals, but to act as supplier to manufacturers, and it's possible we'll see the system adopted on a production bike in the not-too-distant future.
