Triumph Achieves Record Global Sales in 2024

After a successful 2023 in which Triumph Motorcycles sold 84,985 motorcycles in the calendar year, Triumph sold more than 100,000 motorcycles around the world in 2024, passing the landmark figure for the first time in the 122-year history of the brand.

Overall, 134,635 Triumph motorcycles were sold to customers across the world in 2024 representing a growth of 64% on the previous year. This was the fifth consecutive year that Triumph Motorcycles Group Ltd achieved an all-time record in its motorcycle sales - selling through some 950 dealers in 68 countries globally.

Triumph's sales were up in all its regions across the world, with the greatest growth achieved in India, where sales reached 29,736 and the Americas region, which includes Brazil, Canada and the US, where sales were up by 44%. This was echoed in its distributor markets, which experienced a 33% growth in sales, as well as a 30% growth in Asia, and 18% growth across its European markets, which remain Triumph's largest region.

Since 2019, sales of Triumph Motorcycles have increased by 123%, with growth being achieved in all markets, and standout growth being achieved in Brazil, Italy, Japan, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, Mexico and India where Triumph's sales have more than doubled since 2019, with 230 new dealer business partners joining the brand since then.

Though a 'Legacy Brand' whose origin story starts at the very beginning of the motorcycle industry itself, that has not been baggage for the company, but a platform for success. "This incredible set of landmark results for 2024 has been achieved by delivering a comprehensive new model launch programme, as well as successfully tapping into wholly new segments of the market.

"In response to growing global demand for smaller capacity motorcycles, Triumph launched the 400 cc Triumph Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, which arrived in dealers in early 2024. Designed from the ground-up with a brand-new single cylinder engine platform, these new models are designed to deliver a fun, agile and confidence-inspiring ride for buyers of all ages and experience levels."

Triumph also entered the motocross market for the first time, with the arrival of the TF 250-X in Triumph's new network of Motorcross & Enduro Centres in May 2024. "With a class-leading power to weight ratio and the most complete specification package ever to launch into the ultra-competitive 250 cc motocross market, this new model has been celebrated by the media and riders. Triumph's first 450 cc motocross model, the TF 450-RC Edition, was revealed in September 2024, and became available in dealerships in February 2025."

TF 250-X

Triumph Motorcycles Chief Commercial Officer Paul Stroud said: "We're very pleased with the growth that we achieved last year, which follows an incredible run of continuous growth since 2019, despite a very challenging global economic climate.

"Our decision to enter two new segments has been very well received by our dealers and customers and has helped us to bring new riders to the Triumph brand. This is reflected in our growing international dealer network and expanding aftersales programmes.

"Our growth is even more remarkable when you take into account the sales of Triumph Motorcycles being achieved by our partner Bajaj Automotive in India, where in 2024 they sold 29,736 Triumph 400's taking our total global sales including India to 134,635 Triumph motorcycles. That's 64% more than in 2023, and an incredible 123% increase since 2019."

FUN FACT - to promote its ADV 'chops', Triumph officially claimed the Guinness World Records title for 'The greatest distance travelled on a motorcycle in 24 hours (individual)' in 2023. Riding a factory-specification Tiger 1200 GT Explorer on the High-Speed Ring at the Nardò Technical Center in Italy, five times Enduro World Champion and Triumph Global Ambassador Iván Cervantes travelled more than 4,012 km in a 24-hour period, beating the previous record of 3,406 km by a huge margin of more than 600 km.

Triumph's new model programme is continuing at pace into 2025, with the all-new Tiger Sport 800 launching into a new Sports Tourer segment and arriving in dealerships from March. Four model family updates have already been revealed, including the Speed Triple 1200 RS, Speed Twin 900 and 1200, plus the launch of a new Speed Twin 1200 RS. Special editions including a new Bobber TFC (Triumph Factory Custom), a range of Bonneville Icon Editions and a 2,500 cc Rocket 3 Evel Knievel Limited Edition have also been announced. The Rocket 3 Triple is the world's largest production motorcycle engine.

Triumph currently employs around 3,000 personnel worldwide and has subsidiary operations in the UK, North America, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan, Sweden (Scandinavia), Benelux, Brazil, China, and Thailand as well as a network of independent distributors. Triumph has manufacturing facilities in Hinckley in the UK and Thailand, plus CKD facilities in Brazil and India.

News Briefs

New Zealand based EV bike maker UBCO has filed for bankruptcy protection. Known for its 2x2 all-wheel-drive bikes, UBCO has been a well-respected entrant in the EV space. While it is not known whether its prior involvement with the now liquidated Tucker Powersports distributing operation is the direct cause of its problems, it can't have helped. An exhibitor at AIMExpo in recent years, the company was not slated to be at the Las Vegas show in February this year. RideApart reports that UBCO's funding is said to have dried up, with the startup now in receivership, having burned through a previously raised $70m in investment funding. Production has been suspended and all employees 'let go'.

The MIC reports that before leaving office President Biden signed the Expanding Public Lands Outdoor Recreation Experiences (EXPLORE) Act, which will increase public land access, address barriers for veterans and people with disabilities, streamline small-business permitting, and more. "The EXPLORE Act will supercharge the outdoor recreation industry," said Jessica Wahl Turner, President of Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. "This transformative new law will help ensure every American has access to world-class outdoor experiences – from their backyards to the backcountry – while supporting the businesses, workers, and communities who make those experiences possible."  The bill was introduced in 2024 by Representative Bruce Westerman, Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee. The MIC supported the bill and wrote to the committee last year, stating: "Passage of the EXPLORE Act will help ensure that our nearly $50bn powersports industry, and the recreation economy generally, continues to grow and serve our ever-expanding constituencies."

In January 2025, RideApart reported that the US Federal Trade Commission, together with the state attorneys general of Illinois and Minnesota, officially filed a federal lawsuit against John Deere over ongoing 'Right to Repair' complaints. The suit alleges a decades-long throttling of both farmers' and independent repair shops' abilities to repair and/or maintain equipment manufactured by Deere. Such actions are prevented, says the suit, by increased computerization of Deere machinery through increased reliance on electronic control units (ECUs), which are then only accessible via special software tools that John Deere also controls access to.

Rekluse and Wiseco are to continue as Official Partners of Progressive American Flat Track with a two-year renewal for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Sister companies under the Race Winning Brands (RWB) umbrella, Rekluse and Wiseco, boast a long tradition of involvement in the sport. Rekluse formally came on board as a partner of Progressive AFT an official capacity in 2017 with Wiseco following suit the following year. Both brands will up their support of the series this season with the introduction of two new awards that will feature at each round. The Rekluse Clutch 'Move of the Race' awards a $250 product certificate to the AFT Singles presented by KICKER rider who pulls off the best racing maneuver or save in any given Main Event. The Wiseco Warrior Award will see the Mission AFT SuperTwins pilot who overcomes the most adversity during the event rewarded with a $250 product certificate.

BMW

BMW Focuses on Retro Twins

Big, retro boxer twins are the order of the day at BMW for 2025 with the launch of the new R 12 S, two updated R 18 cruisers and the apparent confirmation that last year's R20 Concept is also heading towards production.

BMW's last launch in 2024 was the R 12 S, a largely cosmetic rework of the relatively new R 12 nineT that harks back to the R 90 S by adding a nose cowl, seat hump and iconic orange and silver paintwork, albeit in a slightly more vibrant tone than the original's Daytona Orange.

It might be essentially a parts bin creation as the fairing, tail unit and 'Option 719' dress-up parts fitted to the R 12 S are all available optionally on the standard model, as is the Headlight Pro system, Shift Assistant Pro, heated grips and cruise control that come with the R 12 S as standard, but uprating the stock R 12 nineT to the same specification is considerably more expensive.

The brand's first new model launches of 2025 have been a pair of updated R 18 cruisers - the base R 18 and the R 18 Classic. They both gained a slightly reworked, Euro5+ version of the massive 1,802 cc boxer twin, as do the other 2025 models in the R 18 range, with unchanged peak power of 67 kW but a slight increase of torque from 158 Nm to 163 Nm, and changes to their wheels and styling.

The base R 18 switches from wire wheels to cast alloys and its rear wheel goes from 16 inches to 18 inches for 2025. The changes also include new front and rear mudguards and a much simpler, more attractive exhaust with two circular-section tail pipes instead of the fishtailed design used before. The shrouds that hid the forks on the original version have been deleted in another move away from the retro look of the previous iteration.

The R 18 Classic bagger is also updated, with a slim 19-inch front wheel instead of the earlier version's fat 16-inch design. A new fender extends much further around the wheel than before, as well as the same updated rear fender that appears on the standard 2025 R 18. It retains the more traditional look with fork shrouds and wire wheels.

One surprise is that the R 18 models haven't adopted a larger, 2,000 cc version of the engine, particularly after BMW teased that motor with its R 20 Concept in early 2024. However, and R 20 is on the horizon as BMW has filed multiple trademark applications to use the name 'R 20' on motorcycles for commercial purposes. The R 20 Concept, which essentially combined an enlarged version of the R 18's massive, air-cooled twin with a chassis and style similar to the much smaller R 12 nineT, looks like a near-certainty for production soon.

BSA

BSA B65 Scrambler Coming This Year

The single-cylinder BSA Gold Star 650 launched under the brand's Mahindra ownership has proved a quiet success in terms of sales since its 2022 launch and now a second model - the B65 Scrambler - is set for summer 2025.

Like the Gold Star, the B65 uses a 652 cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine that, despite its retro, finned appearance can actually trace its heritage to the Rotax 650 that powered the likes of BMW's F650 and G650 models, as well as Aprilia's Pegaso 650.

The BSA reworking of the design adds a retro flair to its shape, although not to the extent of air-cooled rivals like Royal Enfield's 650 cc twin-cylinder bikes. Liquid cooling means the BSA single's power output can match that of the Royal Enfield twins, peaking at 45 hp and 6,500 rpm, with 55 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The motor is mounted in the same steel tube frame used by the Gold Star, with 41 mm forks and a twin-shock rear end. The B65 Scrambler raises the ride height, raising the seat by 40 mm. A 19-inch front wheel replaces the Gold Star's 80-incher, paired to a similar 17-inch rear wheel, and the B65 gets Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR rubber instead of Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp tyres. At 218 kg, the B65 is 5 kg heavier than the Gold Star.

Other changes include a different instrument display, with the B65 borrowing its circular LCD from the Jawa 42 that's also a product of Mahindra's 'Classic Legends' subsidiary group.

Drag Specialties FatBook

FatBook 2025 Cover Bike

Our thanks to Don Emde's team at Drag Magazine and to Edge Advertising for these words and pictures.

The 2025 Drag Specialties FatBook cover bike is a beautiful blend of two eras of performance – it taps into the current popular "bagger racing" trend but has design cues and custom touches that are drawn from a type of custom motorcycle design that was popular a few decades earlier.

"The performance bagger style is really hot right now," Cheeseman said. "But I am really a fan of the 90s Pro Street look and style – a little more sheet metal, the overall look of the bike dropped a little lower. I wanted that Pro Street look, but to improve on the performance aspect of it with parts we didn't have back then but are available now."

The build started with a stock 2023 Low Rider ST. Then Cheeseman and his crew took a look through the FatBook for parts that would result in a cool blend of those two styles. "There are so many good parts to choose from," he said. "What it really came down to when making the choices was, does it real ly work for this build or not?"

The first change was a Paul Yaffe "The Fix" rear fender kit. "That Yaffe fender is phenomenal," Cheeseman said. "It just works so well at cleaning up the rear end of the bike. And the little details like the license plate frame already being Frenched into the fender, the no taillight look," he said.

To further clean up the rear lines of the bike, Cheeseman fabricated a new set of saddlebag mounts. "It drops the bags maybe an inch or so," he said. "It brings the line down a little bit, tucks them in more, makes it look smoother and sleeker. And the mounts are fully adjustable."

The front end uses a modified Klock Werks front fender. Cheeseman also fabricated custom fender brackets to get the ideal fit and flow of the fender line to match the Pro Street shape he wanted.

The front suspension was upgraded using a Legend Suspensions 43 mm AXEO kit, and the rear suspension is now handled by a Legend Suspensions Air-A Mono kit. Braking power was upgraded with SlyFox 2-piece rotors at the front and rear. The front end also saw a set of Speed Merchant radial brake rotor caliper mounts paired with Performance Machine 4-piston brake calipers for an impressive boost in braking power.

The engine features an S&S Superstreet 2-into-1 exhaust system with a stainless steel finish and a Kodlin USA Oval air cleaner kit with a black finish.

Cheeseman and his team also added in some custom fabrication work to areas of the bike. The front spoiler is another custom piece, hand-fabricated from aluminum by Cheeseman. "It is a pretty cool piece. I am proud of that," he said. "I am also a big fan of symmetry on a motorcycle," he said. "The stock fuel filler, I welded and filled the original location, moved the fuel bung to the center of the tank and integrated the dash for a cleaner look. We also fixed the front fairing angle by a few degrees, tipping it back a bit to flow with the lines better, using a hidden fairing bracket we fabricated."

The stock ignition coil is now inside the front fairing (with custom venting to allow for cooling airflow) and rerouting the ignition wiring as needed to further clean up the look. "We also made a custom top motor mount," Cheeseman said.

Lighting is upgraded all around. The front end now features a Shark Demon 2 head light. LED fairing vent lights, windshield trim, saddlebag lights, turn signals and a series of red LED Boltz frenched into the rear saddle bag filler panels to make the bike shine – and light up when the rider hits the brakes! "The more visible, the better," Cheeseman said.

The paint is a mix of H-D Crimson Red candy over a base of Orion Silver Max combined with Kosmic Sparks Ocean Blue. "I am a bass boat/metalflake paint kind of guy," Cheeseman said with a laugh. "But that kind of finish might have been a little too far out there. The combination is a play on the classic Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited colors, but it still is pretty wild. I hope everyone who sees this bike finds it inspiring."
