Joe Teresi

Joe Teresi 1941-2025

The whole of the V-twin community has been greatly saddened by the passing of one of the true legends of the Biker Lifestyle - Joe Teresi.

Joe Teresi 1941-2025

One of the three originals founders of 'Easyriders' magazine in 1970 (though the first edition was published in June 1971), Joe, Lou Kimzey and Mil Blair made the ultimate 'zeitgeist' play a year after the iconic Easy Rider movie had the hippies pouring out of the movie theatres and headed for the salvage yards.

It is arguable whether the so-called 'Biker Lifestyle' gave birth to the magazine or whether the magazine gave birth to the lifestyle, but either way Joe, Mil and Lou quickly defined the custom motorcycle community's image of itself, and the rest was not just history, but genuinely historic.

Often imitated but never bettered, the first edition of 'Easyriders' hit the shelves in June 1971 and in terms of 'biker culture' and custom bike design nothing was quite the same again.

It was under Joe's passionate and assured guidance that 'Easyriders' became a phenomenon. Topping out at something like 550,000 copies sold a month and spawning brand extensions from shows to shops, from books to beer and from art to craft - the craft of custom motorcycle design and engineering done a particular way, for a particular time and for a particular audience.

From newspapers to magazines, when it is 'done right' and 'timed right' the power of publishing is something to behold, and Joe was one of the rarest of rare beasts. A magazine man who could be a steady, reliable and engaged hand on the tiller, as well as a shrewd brand steward and business manager. The two do not often go hand in glove where the publishing industry is concerned, but in Joe Teresi our world had a genius at the helm who 'got it'.

'Easyriders' rides again - six times a year from January 2025

Our world is so much the poorer for Joe's passing. Our best wishes go to his wife Ellen and the family.

And best wishes too to the 'fellow travellers' who, just this past year, have managed to bring the 'Easyriders' naming rights and Paisano publishing company back together again and into the hands of a team who 'get it'. Joe was the inspiration as 'eminence grise' with Dave Nichols as Editor, Michael Lichter as lensman extraordinaire, Felicia Morgan as Roving Reporter and Penny Osiecki looking after the advertisers. It's great to see the pages of the old mill turning over again - that's the most fitting of legacies.

Polaris industries

Polaris Q1 Sales Revenues Slide by More than 12%;  Speetzen - "The only US Headquartered Powersports Company Stands to be Hit Hardest"

Indian Motorcycle owner Polaris industries have reported first quarter sales "in line with expectations" at $1,536m, down 12% compared to last year.

Primary factors said to be affecting first quarter sales were lower volume due to planned shipment reductions and lower net pricing - "driven by higher promotional spend partially offset by positive mix."

The company says that overall powersports retail sales for the quarter were down 7% versus last year, and that it saw first quarter market share gains in motorcycles and marine - with a "modest" loss of share in its off-road vehicles (ORV) operations.

On Road segment sales were primarily driven to the negative by lower volumes. North America unit retail sales for Indian Motorcycle were down low-teens percent; PG&A sales decreased by 5%. Gross profit margin performance was driven by negative product mix and higher promotional activity, partially offset by operational efficiencies.

Unit retail sales for the comparable motorcycle industry were down mid-twenties percent, meaning that Indian Motorcycle saw an increase in market share in a down market with its new PowerPlus heavy weight line up being well received by dealers and riders.

North American Off Road segment sales were down 11% with PG&A up by 1%. The company saw lower volumes in snow and off-road vehicles. Estimated North America industry ORV unit retail sales were down low-single digits percent. Marine segment sales volumes were down.

However, while tariffs had not yet fed through into costs significantly, by the end of March, and despite implementing what it sees as a strong tariff mitigation strategy, Polaris said it had responded to the increasingly widespread volatility in consumer confidence and demand by already implementing much of its "recession play-book" - implying that doing so was much as anything due to the ongoing long-term downward trend in powersports vehicle demand as it was to the likely impacts of tariffs.

As a result of consumer demand and cost landscape uncertainty, Polaris is withdrawing full year 2025 Company sales and adjusted earnings guidance - saying that the present situation "can't be annualised - there are too many moving parts" and that they were moving too quickly.

First quarter reported diluted loss per share was $1.17; adjusted diluted loss per share was $0.90. Cash retention will be one of its primary priorities moving forward - first quarter operating cash flow was $83m.

Though not issuing forward guidance, as such, Polaris is saying that second quarter planning assumptions will include an expectation that total sales will be between $1.6 and $1.8bn; that retail demand will "remain pressured with elevated (and expensive) promotions and dealer shipments lower than retail with dealer inventory being "actively managed", and reduced shipments of Slingshot and Indian Motorcycles to Canada and Europe.

Polaris CEO Mike Speetzen is quoted as saying that "results from this recent quarter were in line with our expectations, as we continued to prioritize supporting our dealer network and managing a prolonged industry downturn.

"While consumer uncertainty and a dynamic tariff environment are near-term hurdles, we are thoughtfully navigating these challenges. Our team continues to make progress on the strategic efforts within our control, from innovation and quality advancements in our lineup to our operational efficiency and working capital efforts.

"We expect this unrelenting focus on long-term growth and profitability will enable us to emerge stronger from this downturn and reinforce our position as the industry leader."

In his Q&A remarks to investment analysts, Speetzen said that: "The only US headquartered powersports company stands to be hit hardest. We had already reduced the China made content of our vehicles by some 15% as a result of decisions taken in 2028. Our objective is to reduce the Chinese made component level by 30 percent in total by the end of 2025."

Speetzen also remarked that "part of consumer caution on big expenditures is triggered by interest rates and people now suspect that they are not now going to come down significantly further this year."

Within the 12% reduction in worldwide sales of $1,536m versus the first quarter of 2024, North America sales of $1,290m represented 84% of total Company sales, decreasing by 11% from $1,444m in 2024. International sales of $246m represented 16% of total Company sales and decreased 16% versus the first quarter of 2024. First quarter operating cash flow was $83m.

For the first quarter, net loss attributable to Polaris was $67m, or $(1.17) per diluted share, compared to net income attributable to Polaris of $4m, or $0.07 per diluted share, for the first quarter of 2024. Adjusted net loss attributable to Polaris for the quarter was $51m, and adjusted EPS was $(0.90).

Gross profit margin decreased 307 basis points to 16.0% for the first quarter; adjusted gross profit margin of 16.6% decreased 242 basis points. Operating expenses were $303m in the first quarter of 2025 compared to $313m in the first quarter of 2024 due to lower R&D and G&A expenses. Operating expenses, as a percentage of sales, of 19.7% were up 170 basis points in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the first quarter of 2024.

Drag Specialties Battle Of The Baggers

Drag Specialties Battle Of The Baggers

- Presented by Memphis Shades

Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, Desert Center, California

The 2025 series of the Drag Specialties Battle Of The Baggers Presented by Memphis Shades is underway with the first two rounds having been staged at the Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, in the desert near the Salton Sea in Southern California (April 26-27).

In punishing conditions, the weekend was a 'robust' test of Man and Machine - 6-classes for the 124CI Road Glides and Indian Challengers that define the Performance Bagger market.

Tough track conditions, late weather rolling in Saturday afternoon, and the unforgiving desert heat made for intense battles, dramatic crashes, and a handful of battered bikes (and riders).

Several teams overcame major mechanical challenges (and injuries) to put together solid rides on Sunday. Even a few racers who crashed out yesterday rallied back, patched up their bikes (and bodies), and delivered strong second round performances.

The series welcomed some new faces to the grid, "proving there's a new wave of fast talent ready to shake up the points race this season. With several key players nursing injuries and some hard-fought class battles already underway, it's clear the 2025 season is shaping up to be a tight points battle all the way."

Fans worldwide tuned in for the live broadcast, proudly presented by Newcastle Harley-Davidson, a longtime supporter of the Bagger Racing League - on the Bagger Racing League YouTube and RacerTV.com - free for everyone.

Progressive American Flat Track

Memphis Shades Ventura Short Track

AFT 2025 R4 – April 26, Ventura, California

It took the Harley-Davidson XG750R more than eight Progressive American Flat Track seasons to at last earn its maiden Mission AFT SuperTwins victory, then it took just one more race to get its second.

Both wins came courtesy of two-time Grand National Champion Briar Bauman (No. 3 RWR/Parts Plus/Latus Motors Harley-Davidson XG750R), who was again in spectacular form at the Ventura Raceway in California on April 26, en route to a second consecutive victory in the Memphis Shades Ventura Short Track presented by Law Tigers.

While Bauman ended the night in glory, the spotlight panned back and forth throughout the day. Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) held the upper hand for the bulk of the event with his stiffest challenge arguably coming from Suzuki-mounted Dan Bromley (No. 62 Memphis Shades/Vinson Construction Suzuki GSX-8S).

Max Whale (No. 18 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650), Logan McGrane (No. 14 Schaeffer's Motorsports/Rick Canode KTM 790 Duke), and James Ott (No. 19 G&G Racing Yamaha MT-07) jockeyed for podium positions after Daniels took the holeshot, but Bauman pounced on Daniels in the opening handful of laps.

Daniels took second, Jarod VanDerKooi (No. 20 Fastrack Racing/Wally Brown Racing KTM 790 Duke) third with Brandon Robinson fourth on the second XG750R ahead of Bromley in fifth.

In addition to the two Harleys, there were two Yamaha MT-07 riders in the Top 10, with three KTM 790 Dukes, a Suzuki GSX-8S, a Royal Enfield 650 and a Honda Transalp.

In the AFT Singles presented by KICKER, Kage Tadman took the win on a KTM 450 SX-F, ahead of Chase Saathoff and Tarren Santero on Hondas. In total there were five Honda CRF450R riders in the Top 10, and as well as the winner's KTM there were three Yamaha YZF450Rs and a Husqvarna badged FC450.

Next Up: Two more Short Tracks take the 2025 series first to the Silver Dollar Speedway at Chico in northern California on May 3 before the Lucas Oil Speedway at Wheatland, Missouri on June 7. After that the longer distances start-up with the two Lima Half Miles in Ohio at the end of June.

Then it's to Illinois for the DuQuoin Mile on July 5 before heading for the Black Hills of South Dakota for three Sturgis races – two Jack Pine Short Tracks on August 4 and 5 before wrapping the Rally up with a downtown TT on August 10.

Specifically designed to directly replace and radically upgrade OE hoses, they recently became aware of a common fault with one of the hoses on the Pan America. There is insufficient clearance between the header and the manifold - this can cause the OEM rubber hose to burn. The redesigned higher heat tolerance silicone replacement eliminates the problem, allowing the needed additional clearance - with the addition of gold-colored heat-reflective tape to further reduce the heat issues. Backed by a lifetime warranty and offering better flow efficiency, longer life and extremely high burst pressures, Samco Sport hoses are available in a wide range of model match and custom colors; www.samcosport.com

Yamaha Hybrid Prototype Points to Future Big Scooter

By Ben Purvis

Yamaha can be credited with essentially creating the concept of the maxi-scooter with the launch of its XP500 T-Max 25 years ago. Now the company is exploring how hybrid power could be adopted in future bikes aimed at the same category.

The HEV Proto is a rolling laboratory exploring the potential for hybrid powertrains, and Yamaha has released a video showing how its 'series-parallel' hybrid system works.

Normally hybrids, which are increasingly familiar on four wheels, are either 'series' or 'parallel' designs. A series hybrid is also often known as a range-extender, and mean an electric vehicle that has a combustion engine used purely to drive a generator, topping up the battery when needed.

A parallel hybrid, by contrast, has a petrol engine that drives the wheels as well as electric motors, with the electric power used as an extra boost to reduce emissions and improve fuel economy.

A series-parallel hybrid, as shown by Yamaha, offers a combination of both designs, allowing them to operate in all-electric mode while still including a petrol engine and transmission that can drive the wheels. Kawasaki's Ninja 7 Hybrid and Z7 Hybrid work like that - the only big hybrid bikes currently on the market - and Yamaha's design follows the same pattern.

In all-electric mode, the battery mounted between the rider's feet feeds an electric motor on the rear hub, allowing the bike to operate like any other electric machine as it pulls away. Once on the move, it initially enters series hybrid mode, with the combustion engine running but at low speeds all its power goes into a generator, recharging the battery, and it's not coupled to the rear wheel. At higher speeds, a clutch engages to couple the combustion engine to the rear wheel via a belt drive, and the electric power is disengaged to save the battery.

Like the Kawasaki hybrids, the Yamaha prototype also has a 'boost' mode where both the combustion engine and the electric motor are used to power the rear wheel simultaneously, maximising its performance and acceleration.

Yamaha says that in the future the system, while prototyped on a maxi-scooter style bike, could be used on all types of motorcycles, including roadsters and sports bikes.

Honda

Honda Trademark Points to V3R Model

By Ben Purvis

When Honda showed the V3 Concept at last year's EICMA - even as just an engine and bare chassis - it immediately stole the limelight from every other machine at the show and the company was quick to promise that a production model using the same powertrain was on the way. Now that looks set to get the name 'V3R' after Honda filed trademark applications for rights to use that name on future motorcycles.

It's a clear indication that the initial bike to use the engine, which features not only an unusual V3 layout but an electric supercharger to help meet performance demands and boost low-end torque, while meeting modern emissions limits, will be a sporty model, as indicated by the 'R' in the title.

Eventually, the V3R model name is likely to be just part of the model's brand name, with additional figures and letters to define the bike's capacity and how extreme its sporting edge is. Honda has conventionally used two or three letter prefixes to define its four-stroke, V-engined models, with 'VT' and 'VTR' used for V-twins and 'VF' and 'VFR' on V-fours. The same strategy would see the V-three also, confusingly, getting 'VT' or 'VTR' initials, hence the introduction of the 'V3R' name to set it apart from Honda's twins.

It's not Honda's first production V3, of course. The NS400R takes that honor, but that was a two-stroke, and therefore followed a completely different naming strategy - one that didn't specify the cylinder count.

The V3 Concept shown at EICMA featured the new engine bolted to a steel trellis frame, but with the forks, brakes and swingarm all from Honda's existing CB1000R roadster. Could that be a clue as to the style of bike that debuts the new engine? At the moment, there's no official word on that, or on the engine's capacity or performance level. Rumors place the V3 at around the 800 cc or 850 cc mark, so the production model to debut the engine could be called something like 'V3R800R'.

Eventually, multiple bikes are expected to emerge based on the same platform, all bearing the 'V3' or 'V3R' name with additional numbers or letters to define their style.

Ducati

Ducati 2024 - 54,495 Units

For the third consecutive year, Ducati recorded revenues of more than one billion euro in 2024 (€ 1,003bn; compared to € 1,065bn in 2023) - "a result achieved despite the challenges that are the industry is facing and the current global competitive environment."

Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali

Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati, said: "The 2024 results confirm the strength of our brand and the company's ability to generate the financial resources that allow us to continue to invest and consolidate the excellence, value and exclusivity of our products."

Described as proof of the effectiveness of the strategic choices made in recent years - "oriented towards the development of a product range that represents the best fusion of beauty, performance and technology" - Ducati posted 2024 operating profit (EBIT) of € 91m (9.1% margin; 10.5% in 2023).

The company sold 54,495 motorcycles in 2024 (58,224 in 2023). "2024 ended with a positive balance for Ducati, one that confirms the solid basis that Ducati has both as a brand and in financial terms - a benchmark of profitability in the two-wheeler market."

For 2025 Ducati has presented ten new models, including the new XDiavel V4 and Multistrada V4, equipped with the V4 Granturismo engine, alongside the Panigale V4 and Streetfighter V4, both powered by the latest evolution of the Desmosedici Stradale engine. There is also the Panigale V2, Streetfighter V2 and Multistrada V2 - equipped with Ducati's new V2 engine, the lightest twin-cylinder ever made by Ducati.

However, the news that has the potential to either take Ducati to another level, or rain on its parade, is its entry into Off-Road racing with the introduction of its first motocross bike due to be available at selected dealerships from June 2025 - the Desmo 450X.

Giving It Air - S&S Tuned M8 Induction Air Cleaners and Indian Touring Stealth Options

S&S Cycles' Scott Hakins says: "Air flow is everything in a performance engine and naturally it begins at the air filter. The factory M8 units are downright boxy and can be very restrictive." But Scott says that the S&S Cycle Tuned Induction Air Cleaner "utilizes two highly engineered laser cut tubes merged into a single collector and fed by a pair of high flow air filters placed directly in the air flow.

"The end result is maximum performance for your engine, ample room for your leg to sit tightly against the body of your M8 Touring or Softail model, and a stylish package."

Available in Gloss Black, Chrome, or Stainless-Steel finishes, "our Tuned Induction systems allow for a 44% increase in air flow over the stock element, providing bolt-on performance thanks to twice the filtering area.

"The dual smooth intake tracts are precision engineered lengths to increase performance and like all S&S Cycle air cleaners, our Tuned Induction system features washable and reusable high-flow filter elements that provide a long service life.

"This system is exempt from emissions tampering regulations under CARB EO# D-355-55 so there are no restrictions on shipping or installing these systems no matter which state you're in. However, just remember that this system will not fit on motorcycles equipped with fairing lower glove boxes or Twin-Cooled models."

Also seen here, for Indian Touring Models, "the innovative design, advanced materials, and focus on performance optimization means the S&S Stealth Air Cleaner redefines air filtration technology for high-performance engines.

"Engineered to deliver increased power, durability, and efficiency, it stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence in motorcycle performance. Giving Indian Tourers a unique look with a hint that there might be more than a stock engine in the bike, they are available with a Gloss Black Teardrop Cover right now, but with Chrome Teardrops and no-cover options to follow - so riders can use any of the S&S Stealth Covers that fit their style."

These Stealth Kits fit 2020-2025 Indian Challenger, Pursuit Models, and 2025 Chieftain PowerPlus and Roadmaster PowerPlus Models.
