Polaris

Polaris Reports Q2 Powersports Sales -12% with On Road Down by -19%; Indian Motorcycle Loses NA Market Share

Polaris Inc. reported Q2 North America (NA) unit retail sales for Indian Motorcycle down low twenties percent. Estimated North America unit retail sales for the comparable motorcycle industry were down mid-single digits percent.
On Road segment sales (primarily Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot) were $293.3m for Q2, down by -19% compared to the $361.6m for the year-ago quarter; segment gross profit margin was 20.8%, down by 180 bps from the 22.6% in Q2 2023. Q2 On Road PG&A sales decreased by -10%.

Off Road sales were $1,533.8m for Q2, down by -6% compared to the $1,631.4m in 2023; segment gross profit margin of 21.0% was down by 140 bps from 22.4% in 2023. Q2 Off Road PG&A sales increased by 10%.
Powersports retail unit sales for the quarter were down by -8% versus last year, driven by a decline in motorcycles and marine, second quarter ORV was down -4%.
Including $134.1m of Q2 sales in its marine segment (-40%), total Q2 sales were $1,961m, down by -12% compared to last year. North America sales of $1,677m represented 86% of total company sales and decreased by -11% from $1,883m in 2023. International sales of $284m represented 14% of total company sales and decreased by -15% versus the second quarter of 2023.

Mike Speetzen, CEO of Polaris: "The second quarter proved challenging as our industry continued to contend with elevated interest rates, inflation and an increasingly cautious dealer and consumer."

Second quarter market share was flat in off-road vehicles (ORV) and pontoons. Primary factors affecting second quarter sales were lower volume and net pricing, driven by higher promotional spend, partially offset by positive mix. Second quarter reported diluted earnings per share was $1.21, down by -48% versus last year; adjusted EPS was $1.38 (-43%).
It has been a tough year for Polaris in share price terms. Its stock dropped from $82.14 at close the afternoon before these results were released to $74.67 as soon as traders saw them the following morning. After dropping to $71.96 the following day, the price rallied a tad by the end of the week, to still end down though. Set that against a 12-month high in July 2023 of $137.17. However, despite that, share performance, at a market cap of $4.06bn, Polaris remains only some $600m smaller in market valuation terms than Harley-Davidson ($4.66bn).

'the second quarter proved challenging'

Mike Speetzen, CEO of Polaris Inc., is quoted as saying: "The second quarter proved challenging as our industry continued to contend with elevated interest rates, inflation and an increasingly cautious dealer and consumer.
"As we position our business to navigate this economic cycle, our team is focused on making progress against key priorities, including manufacturing efficiency improvements and our pipeline of industry-leading innovation. Reducing dealer inventory is a central priority, both through intentional retail driving efforts and adjusting our production forecasts to further cut back on dealer shipments.

"On Road segment sales (primarily Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot) were $293.3m for Q2, down by -19% compared to the $361.6m for the year-ago quarter.

"Although it might take longer than originally anticipated, I am confident in our long-term strategy and the Polaris team's ability to emerge stronger and well-positioned to drive profitable growth, deliver value to shareholders and capitalize on our position as the powersports industry leader."
The company updated its 2024 sales outlook to be down 17 to 20% versus its previous outlook (-5 to -7% versus 2023). The company now expects adjusted diluted EPS to be down 56 to 62% versus 2023, versus the prior outlook of down 10 to 15%.
Operating expenses were $330m in both the second quarter of 2024 and the second quarter of 2023. Operating expenses, as a percentage of sales of 16.8%, were up 194 basis points in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the second quarter of 2023.

Zero

Zero pseudo-clutch could transform electric bikes By Ben Purvis

Almost every electric motorcycle is direct drive - the motor is permanently geared to the rear wheel via a single ratio - so there's no need for a clutch or gear shifter. But American EV pioneer Zero is considering adding a false clutch lever to its electric bikes to give them an extra dimension of controllability.
While the purpose of a clutch is simply to disengage drive from an engine to the transmission, so you can come to a halt without stalling, and to shift gears smoothly, in reality, riders use that left-hand lever in a much more subtle way. It's as important as the throttle, or even more so, when it comes to deciding how fast you get off the line when the lights go green.

It's used to moderate the amount of engine braking at the rear wheel when you downshift and can be invaluable in giving fine control during low-speed maneuvers. When an experienced rider gets on an electric bike for the first time, it's the lack of a clutch lever, more than anything else, that is initially jarring.
While electric motors offer vast torque at low revs, without a clutch you're at the mercy of a pre-programmed torque curve and throttle response map when it comes to getaways, and changing the amount of regenerative braking available often means delving into the depths of menus hidden in the dashboard's user interface.
Zero's new idea, revealed in a patent application from the company, is to use a control that looks, feels and operates like a clutch lever, but doesn't actually involve fitting a real clutch between the electric motor and transmission.
Instead, the lever will operate a rotary sensor that alters the amount of torque reaching the rear wheel, or back-torque from regenerative braking when the bike is decelerating, to mimic the response of a clutch. Pull the lever in and the power and torque to the rear wheel is cut, even when the throttle is wide open. Release it again and the torque is returned to the wheel. That means riders with years of ingrained experience of balancing throttle and clutch controls will be able to get the same response from an electric bike, using the 'pseudo-clutch' lever alongside the throttle.
It's not just useful for the sake of familiarity, though, as it gives the ability to control the throttle mapping on the fly in a natural, instinctive way, and perhaps more importantly control the amount of regenerative braking on the rear wheel without switching between modes. And with relatively few additional components - most of the changes are software driven, not hardware ones - it's a system that shouldn't add substantially to prices.

DK Custom Products

M-8 Softail Footpeg Adapters, Floorboard and Tour-Pak Relocation Kits

Hickory Flat, Mississippi based DK Custom Products' fast-growing parts and accessory program for Harley-Davidson applications includes many important little details designed to make the lives of dealers and customizers easier.
A classic example is these durable, black powder-coat finished, CNC-machined steel footpeg adapters.

Footpeg adaptors

Owned and operated by Kevin Pirolo and Devin Bright, Kevin says: "Harley-Davidson, in its sometimes perplexing reasoning, changed the footpeg clevis on M-8 Softails so that NONE of the footpegs made for any other Harley-Davidson will fit the M-8 Softail.
"This means that, until now, the owner of an M-8 Softail had to purchase M-8 Softail-specific pegs. On top of that, pegs that fit the rider mount won't fit the passenger mount! Two different style mounts on the same bike. Grrr.
"This has meant that hundreds of H-D brand pegs, and thousands of aftermarket footpeg designs, would NOT fit any M-8 Softail, until now. The patent-pending DK Custom M-8 Softail footpeg adapter changes all that. You can now run whatever pegs you like - our adapters get the job done."
You can also run DK Custom chrome or black floorboards with this one adapter design. "It's an easy switch," says Kevin. "Simply remove the funky factory pegs, install your favorite pegs with the adapter, and you're good to go - rider or passenger." Fitment is for all 2018 and up Softails. An easy 5-minute install, they ship with all needed hardware.

Tour-Pak relocation kit

Also seen here, the DK Custom Products floorboard relocation kit (also for all 2018 and up Softails) extends the rider's floorboard outward by 1" and forward by 1.5". Made in powder- coated, precision CNC-machined billet aluminum and sold with Grade 8 hardware, the kit is designed for a more comfortable and natural sitting position, getting the feet further away from the exhaust and reducing the cramping of the knees.
The repositioning means that riders can, in effect, use the entire floorboard rather than just the outside or front half. "Once you ride with them, you will be surprised how cramped you feel on bikes with the floorboards right next to the motor," says Kevin.
"These are different to typical floorboard extensions. While they do extend the floorboards out, the additional room created by moving them forward by 1.5" gives a radically improved riding experience."

Floorboard relocation kit

Finally, and while we're on the subject of relocating things to improve the ergonomics of Harley's own design decisions, this Tour-Pak relocation kit for 2014 and up Touring and Tri-Glide models moves the Tour-Pak back by 1", 2" or 3", making more room for the passenger.
An easy, simple, modification-free bolt-on install, it makes it much easier for the passenger to climb on and off the bike, especially if there is a driver's backrest.
"An amazingly simple solution, it works in conjunction with H-D's redesigned (2014+) Tour-Pak mounting architecture, making it more stable and stronger with our unique Tour-Pak cross support. There is no drilling or tapping, it really is a genuinely simple piece of bolt-on ergonomic excellence."
These three product designs are available exclusively through Drag Specialties.

Twin Power

Twin Power - Bag-in-a-Box Dealer Oil Program With Free Rack

Twin Power's 6-gallon 'Bag-in-a-Box' oil program is back for dealers in the United States. Providing dealers with a free, heavy-duty metal dispenser rack when they purchase six boxes of Twin Power’s "high-quality oil and lubricants," this innovative program offers numerous advantages over traditional 55-gallon drums, especially for dealers with limited space or a focus on service and repair.

“We are thrilled to bring this efficient and environmentally-friendly program to our dealers,” said Twin Power’s Brand Manager James Simonelli. “The Bag-in-a-Box system is compact, easy to use and offers substantial savings, which makes it a great choice for shops looking to streamline their operations and reduce costs. And it’s the same great oil that we offer in our quart containers, not a short service interval or break-in oil.”
The 6-gallon Bag-in-a-Box dealer oil program offers numerous benefits to dealers. First, the free dispenser rack provides a practical solution for oil storage and dispensing. The system's compact design requires no more space than a single 55-gallon drum, making it ideal for shops with limited storage. Additionally, the easy-to-use system simplifies oil dispensing and allows dealers to keep service quantities of several different weights of oil available to technicians.
"Environmentally, the Bag-in-a-Box design eliminates containment and disposal issues associated with traditional drums, reducing waste and eliminating the challenge of handling drums of oil," continued Simonelli.
"The 6-gallon bag saves dealers up to 30% compared to quart prices, providing significant financial benefits. The oil in the Bag-in-a-Box system is the same top quality product found in quart bottles, ensuring reliable performance without the need for break-in or short service intervals.
“Our new program not only offers logistical and environmental benefits but supports dealers in providing the highest quality service to their customers. Whether it's a conventional oil, synthetic oil, primary lube or semi-synthetic transmission oil, dealers can have it 'on tap' for their techs and customers.”

BMW Group

Coming to a Factory Near You Soon?

Is it possible that Isaac Asimov's vision of an anthropomorphic 'Three Laws Safe' robotic future is coming another step closer at BMW's automotive assembly plant at Spartanburg, SC?
BMW Group is exploring the use of humanoid robots in production for the first time. During a trial run lasting several weeks, the latest humanoid robot 'Figure 02' from California company Figure successfully inserted sheet metal parts into specific fixtures, which were then assembled as part of the chassis - production steps that require the robot to be particularly dexterous.

R. Daneel Olivaw: "If you want me to do that 24/7/365 without bathroom breaks, then I want benefits and an oil bath."

“The developments in the field of robotics are very promising. With an early test operation, we are now determining possible applications for humanoid robots in production. We want to accompany this technology from development to industrialization,” says Milan Nedeljković, Member of the Board of Management for Production at BMW AG.
Always on the lookout for new technologies for its future-facing 'iFACTORY', BMW says "efficiency, digitalization and sustainability are central to realization of this vision. During the trial run, the BMW Group gained valuable knowledge of what requirements must be met in order to be able to integrate so-called multi-purpose robots in an existing production system."
"This includes how humanoid robots communicate with the system under real conditions," says Brett Adcock, founder and CEO of Figure. “We are excited to unveil 'Figure 02', our second-generation humanoid robot, which recently completed successful testing at the BMW Group Plant Spartanburg. 'Figure 02' has significant technical advancements, which enable the robot to perform a wide range of complex tasks fully autonomously.”

Harley Needs to Start Thinking the Unthinkable

In a low-key announcement, Harley-Davidson has said that it is to move production of its Revolution Max engine-based models, the Pan America and Sportsters, from the United States to its production facility in Thailand.

Harley opened the Thailand facility in 2018, and some jobs that would otherwise have been based in Wisconsin or Pennsylvania at that stage were immediately located in Thailand instead.

A year later, when Harley closed its Kansas City, Missouri facility in 2019, and it moved some existing Wisconsin jobs to Thailand, the company stated that the whole Thailand production project was in direct response to the 31% tariffs that the EU had placed on Harleys and other U.S. made luxury goods. Tariffs which themselves were a response to the U.S. tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from Europe.

To head off political, employee and consumer disquiet, Harley clearly stated at the time that the new Asian facility would only ever produce or assemble motorcycles for international markets. This on the basis that it would have been bad businesses to import tariff-laden raw materials into the USA only to then export the finished goods back to 'tariff-land'.

However, employees in Wisconsin (and Pennsylvania) were sceptical, and they are certainly not happy now - claiming that in affecting production of the Pan America and 'Sport Series' models that are sold in USA, Harley is reneging on its 2019 guarantee.

Local Milwaukee and Wisconsin media channels are reporting that workers at Harley's Menomonee Falls factory (especially) are 'pretty nervous' as a result of the announcements, with considerable uncertainty sown by the move. Not surprisingly, Harley-Davidson employee Unions are furious.

a square in search of a circle

Among the many sentiments expressed by workers at the Menomonee Falls plant, all of whom wished to remain anonymous, one is quoted in reports as telling Milwaukee news outlet TMJ4 that “we believe jobs are leaving, but they don’t want to say how many.”

Harley-Davidson is quoted as telling the channel that this is a “temporary transition” and “just for model year 25.” But the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Union (IAM) isn't convinced.

It is forthright in accusing Harley of breaking its word and threatening to bring down a world of hurt on the company's management. Brian Bryant, International President of the 600,000-member IAM, released a statement in which he said that "in 2019, nearly 600 IAM members at Harley-Davidson and Syncreon in Kansas City lost their jobs when the company shuttered its facility, claiming that its Thailand plant would only serve the Asian and European markets.

“Harley-Davidson has backtracked on that promise, planning to manufacture these bikes abroad and send them back to the U.S. for American consumers.

“To now see this self-proclaimed American icon ship our jobs to Asia is a disgrace. This decision undermines the hard work and dedication of IAM members in York, Pa., and Menomonee Falls, Wis., who have been the backbone of Harley-Davidson’s success.

“The IAM will employ every resource at our disposal to fight this outrageous move. Harley-Davidson needs to return to the drawing board and develop a solution that keeps the production of the Sport Series and Pan America bikes where they belong - in the United States.”

Harley-Davidson confirmed the change, but disagreed with the union on the jobs issue, stating that “this does not have an impact on employment at U.S. facilities.”

In its formal response to the ruckus, the company said: “As a global company, Harley-Davidson also maintains an international manufacturing footprint, like many of its peers.

"As part of our overall manufacturing optimization strategy, Harley-Davidson is to temporarily transition the production of its non-core Revolution Max powertrain equipped models (Pan America, Sportster S, Nightster) to its existing manufacturing facility in Thailand, for model year 2025.

"This move optimizes production capacity for Grand American Touring and other core product segments such as Softail and Trike motorcycles at its York, PA facility. Additionally, building on the [$89m Inflation Reduction Act] DOE Grant, as part of this move, we are investing an additional $9m into our U.S. manufacturing facilities to focus and strengthen our U.S. manufacturing capabilities and capacity for our core products.”

Depending on your point of view, this is either confused or downright disingenuous. It was quite clear at the time that the Inflation Reduction Act/DOE Grant was specifically aimed at subsidizing and incentivizing investment in electric motorcycle production (namely LiveWire) and not for so-called "core product" capabilities.

So, if nothing else is to come out of this brouhaha, at the very least Harley has a square it needs to circle right there.

In February 2017, then President Donald Trump was effusive in extolling the virtues of the iconic American manufacturer when welcoming then CEO Matt Levatich to the White House lawn. The general gist of his remarks was that Harley-Davidson was exactly the kind of 'Made in USA' company that he wanted to see more of.

When the Thailand move became widespread public knowledge a year later, President Trump's volte-face was dramatic. He took it as a personal afront and called on Americans to boycott the Harley-Davidson brand in protest at what he characterized as a betrayal of American interests. At the time, the President claimed Harley was merely using the tariffs as an excuse for moving production abroad anyway.

Well, while that may not have entirely been the case back then, and regardless of how it got to the here-and-now, the company is definitely now in a place that behoves it to start thinking radically about its activities. In preparing a 'Son of HardWire' for 2026 and beyond, Harley needs to confront strategic thinking that despite initial optimism has proven to be just as deeply flawed as the Levatich 'More Roads' plan was.

When it comes to trying to build a next stage on the, at best, partial success of the HardWire strategy, Harley may well be faced with thinking a whole bunch of unthinkables. It is highly likely that the next 12 months will see Harley coming under pressure from investor muscle that does not see the present direction of travel as delivering the kind of ROI that had been promised, and while what is produced, and where, will not be the only question raised - it will certainly be a "biggie."

Klock Werks

Klock Drops Additional New Flares

Mitchell, South Dakota based Klock Werks has added three new Flare windshields for 2023.5-2024 FLH models - Tinted, Kolored and Ice Series.

"We at Klock Werks are proud to introduce our 2023.5-2024 FLH Flare windshields with a full range of tints, kolors, and even ice options available," said Brian Klock, founder of Klock Werks. "Our initial offering is an 8” variation. In addition to this exciting offering, we have also made significant improvements to the windshield blocks. Our goal is to continue pushing and leading the pack in the windshield market!"

The popular, patented Flare design is said to "significantly enhance riding stability and comfort. The 'hips' at the outer edge reroute the air to create downforce on the front of the bike, improving stability compared to a stock shield. The 'flip' at the top directs air upwards and back, delivering cleaner and less turbulent air for both the rider and passenger."

Available in a variety of colors - including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and bronze - "these bold hues ensure that each motorcycle reflects the unique personality and style of its rider."

The Ice Flare offers a fluorescent edge in captivating colors such as pink ice, orange ice, yellow ice, blue ice and green ice. "These neon light-catching windshields add an electrifying touch to any ride and ensure the motorcycle stands out, day or night."

Rekluse

Rekluse M-8 Clutch Basket and Manual Slave Cylinder

V-Twin market reaction to the new 'APEX' manual clutch from Rekluse Motor Sports has been very positive. Featured in the May edition of AMD, and historically best known for founder Al Youngwerth's MX based clutch systems, the entry of the Boise, Idaho based specialist into the manual segment of the V-twin clutch sector has caught the attention of the market.

The tech and production expertise developed for life in the hugely demanding off-road powertrain landscape made a move into a fully manual clutch for the equally severe duty of getting the 'Big Inch' heavyweight cruiser power down to the pavement entirely logical.

The deep offer that Rekluse has already developed for the V-twin market has given it a platform to build on. That platform includes this precision-machined Rekluse clutch basket for Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight models.

Manufactured from billet aluminum and hard anodized to "deliver enhanced clutch modulation, resistance to notching and extended clutch life, the tightly controlled tolerances ensure smooth operation, less drag and reduced clutch noise. Innovative world-class engineering and durable, robust construction allows Rekluse clutch baskets to safeguard vital internal components against the rigors of the road and demands of even the largest V-twin displacements.

"Increased basket durability eliminates breakage caused by engine power transfer and stress. Custom hardware unique to the Rekluse design - it does not require drilling of the OEM ring gear - helps this basket handle up to 200+ ft-lb of torque.

Launched in April this year, the Rekluse 'APEX' is the Boise, Idaho manufacturer's first entry into the manual clutch market for stock M-8 and Big Bore engines. APEX kits are available with clutch baskets as well for the ultimate manual clutch kit under one part number.

"Designed to pair with the Rekluse TorqDrive friction technology for the highest level of performance, it is machined to provide a trued rotation, resulting in less clutch drag, making it easier to find neutral and delivering smoother shifting. It is 'engineered smarter" to have less rotating mass, resulting in a better, smoother throttle response." Compatible with OEM or Rekluse clutch components.

Also seen here, the Rekluse manual slave cylinder for 2017-2020 hydraulic M-8 models is a "true bolt-on upgrade that decreases lever pull effort and expands the friction zone. Reducing hand fatigue and improving control for smoother take-offs, the hard-anodized billet aluminum components deliver enhanced sealing and premium durability - a perfect complement to any clutch, TorqDrive, RadiusX and other aftermarket or OEM clutches."
