Comoto Announces Zach Parham as New CEO

The Comoto Family of Brands, "a leading force in the motorcycle aftermarket parts and apparel industry", has announced that Zach Parham has been elevated to President and Chief Executive Officer of Comoto in a succession plan that had been previously approved by the Board of Directors.

Comoto said: "Zach has been an invaluable asset since the acquisition of J&P Cycles in February 2020, showcasing his expertise in overseeing various aspects of Comoto's operations, including finance, accounting, merchandising, customer service, demand planning, risk management, procurement, and overall operations."

Zach is the successor for Ken Murphy, who initially joined Comoto five years ago as a Board Member and then shortly after assumed the role of President and CEO. Murphy is leaving Comoto to pursue a new opportunity.

After more than four decades, J&P Cycles has announced the closure of its first ever and original hometown store at Anamosa, Iowa. Now owned (since 2020) by the Philadelphia-based Comoto family of brands, which also operates RevZilla and Cycle Gear, J&P Cycles was founded in Anamosa by John and Jill Parham in 1979.

Progressive American Flat Track has confirmed that this year's Mission Texas Half-Mile will run in conjunction with the Goodguys 14th LMC Truck Spring Lone Star Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas (April 26-28, 2024).

The Keynote at the February 2024 AIMExpo in Las Vegas will be given by David Savlowitz and Michael Ponton of Competitive Analytics - "Navigating New Horizons: Unleashing Success with Blue Ocean Strategy," on Tuesday, February 6.

In Germany, Bike & Business reports that CECRA, the voice of European car dealers and repair shops, welcomes the decision of the European Court of Justice that manufacturer-specific restrictions on access to vehicle on-board diagnostic systems (OBD) are unlawful. This decision by the Court reinforces the association's view that security gateways introduced under the pretext of cybersecurity are unfair and contrary to [existing] EU law.

Citing unfavorable economic conditions in Europe, PIERER Mobility, the Austrian KTM, Husqvarna, GasGas and, nowadays, MV Agusta parent company, has announced a partial relocation of production and R&D activities to China (CFMOTO) and India (Bajaj Auto). Affecting individual mid-range models and defined R&D activities, the company says this is intended to exploit cost advantages in these regions and accelerate development and industrialization processes. There will be a reduction of some 300 employees at the Austrian locations in 2024.

2024 will see a new team land in MotoGP - the independent Trackhouse Racing team. Partnering with Aprilia to run its RS-GP MotoGP prototypes (with Portuguese rider Miguel Oliveira and Peruvian Raul Fernandez), Trackhouse will be the first American team to line-up on the MotoGP grid since Kenny Roberts' Team Roberts in 2007. No American has raced in MotoGP since Nicky Hayden left the series in 2015.

Former Dakar Rally racer Joan Pedrero Garcia is to challenge the Africa Eco Race (run roughly parallel to the original Dakkar desert race route) on an H-D Pan America. Working with Harley's Spanish subsidiary, he has already been running a 1250 Pan America against the lighter and more agile middleweights of the 'rally raid-style' event scene for the past year. In 2021, he finished the 1000 Dunas Rally on a largely bone stock RA1250. The Africa Eco allows machines outside the rigid FIM classes; the race starts on December 30, 2023.

For the first six months of its 23/24 financial year (April-September) Honda posted Group Powered Two-Wheeler (PTW) global unit sales of 9,266 (+0.7%). Some 255,000 were sold in North America, 229,000 in Europe, the bulk being in Asia, where Indonesia (2.3m units), India (2.2m) and Vietnam (approx. 1m) are its largest markets. Honda sold 122,000 units in its home market.

BMW posted retail unit sales of +3.5% (164,908 motorcycles and maxi scooters delivered to customers worldwide) for the first nine months of the 2023 financial year, however, citing a change in its model launch calendar (in advance of the new R1300GS in the fourth quarter), revenue arising in the third quarter (July-September) was -20.9% at approx. $705m.

Italian giant Piaggio (Aprilia, Moto Guzzi, Vespa etc.) posted sales data for the first nine months of its 2023 financial year down by -3.4% (at approx. $1.25bn), but with net profit at a none-month all-time record (+20.9%) and worldwide scooter and motorcycle sales +11% at 364,999 units.

Launch of its Desert Rally X and MX market entry were the big news with Ducati at around the time of EICMA, however, for the first nine months of it 2023 financial year overall, production (-18.2%, 45,987 units) and sales (-4%, 47,867 units) were down. Scrambler sub-brand production was -21.5%. Sales in Europe were up at 59% of total sales, with the USA up by 1% to 14%, with China and other markets down.

EICMA 2023 review part 1

According to ANCMA, the Italian Motorcycle Industry Trade Association that owns and operates EICMA, the 80th edition/110th anniversary year saw "over 560,000 people attend the exhibition". 

That is some +19% up on 2022, and describing it as a "Gold Medal Edition", that is actually still some 200,000 or more visitors lower than the peak pre-pandemic claims made for the attendance, but, whether an overestimate or not, there were more than enough people there to keep the aisles and booths of the eight occupied halls busy. 

That was two more halls than in 2022 and three more than in 2021. Some 2,036 brands were "present" according to the organizers, with more than 700 direct exhibitors - confirming the long and growing list of aftermarket parts and accessory and gear and apparel absentees. 

Some 67% or those exhibitors were international, representing 45 countries. EICMA says that more than 30 percent of the exhibitors were "first timers" - another 'tell' in terms of the underlying trend that continues to affect all the major shows in terms of the 'core' international motorcycle industry vendor community, with consolidation, market changes and atrophy continuing to have their effect.

EICMA says there were 39,392 selected and profiled industry professionals present with updated quality criteria that were introduced in 2022 intended to improve dealer (and press) day attendee scrutiny. There were though several tens of thousands more people than that in the aisles on the so-called "Trade Day". Of the "industry professional attendance", 52% was theoretically recorded as "international", from 120 countries.

In media terms, EICMA claims that just over 7,000 journalists, technicians and communication professionals and content creators attended from 62 countries - there were though several thousand more people than that in the aisles on the so-called "Press Day".

The start-point had been to evaluate what features and accessories motorcycles of the future will give us and, in an ideal world, where could free-flowing accessory design creativity take us? Creativity that isn't compromised by factory productionization. EICMA 2023 saw the unveil of a second iteration of its 'Everflowing Design' thinking as a second stage in the translation of design philosophy into design language. The donor bike was a Yamaha MT-09 and parts developed include frontal spoilers, a smart display, height- adjustable seat design and rear seat cowl, side panels, rear spoiler, drag-reducing lenticular rim, side fines that modify the airflow and a fairing with an electronically adjustable windshield and full LED headlight.

TecMate is replacing its OptiMate PRO-4S professional multi-station charger, a 4 x 4 amp independent charging station design that is well liked by dealers, with an updated model, the OptiMate PRO-4 DUO. 

TecMate has focused on power efficiency to beat the strict global power draw regulations mandated by various countries, yet it delivers 20% more charging power per station, and it all helps the dealer where it counts - in the pocket. 

The OptiMate PRO-4 DUO draws only 1.5 amps @ 240V (2.9A @ 120V) when it delivers 5 amp through each of its four independent charging stations - for a total of 20 amp (4 x 5 amp).  It is delivered with a removable power cord and is certified to CE, UL/CSA, PSE, SAA and UKCA. The 60' mode is a more advanced version of the popular 1-hour activation charge mode that was introduced on the original PRO-4S. That was meant for speedy activation of 'dry' charged AGM or to bring factory-activated AGM back to full charge before being fitted to a vehicle.

The new 60' mode can also bring a partially charged LFP battery - namely one delivered at below 30% charge level as mandated for shipping - to a higher level of charge before fitment.  

Each station's Pb or LFP mode allows recovery of any type of dead flat powersport battery from as low as 0.5 volt and then tests and displays the battery's voltage retention ability - a good indication of the battery's state of health. 

LFP mode includes a manually activated BMS reset to bring new smart lithium batteries out of sleep mode or to reset the deep discharge protection of a smart lithium battery so it can receive charge again.  

Any size battery can be connected as OptiMate's proprietary Ampmatic algorithm continuously adjusts charge current to match the battery's size and charge acceptance.

Autoliv Airbags on Bikes by 2025 By Ben Purvis

For more than 70 years, Autoliv (Stockholm, Sweden) has been manufacturing safety equipment for cars and in a landmark move it's turning to motorcycles with the aim of bringing airbag technology to the mass market in 2025.

Autoliv might not be a household name, but the company has been at the forefront of car safety for decades. It developed the first car seatbelt back in 1956, the seatbelt pretensioner in 1989, the knee airbag in 1995 and the side curtain airbag in 1998. In 2021, it signed a deal with Piaggio to develop an affordable on-bike airbag system for motorcycles and scooters.

Now the company says its on-bike airbags will reach production in the first quarter of 2025 as part of the company's ambitious goal of saving 100,000 lives per year by 2030. At the moment, Autoliv estimates its safety equipment saves around 35,000 lives per year, so the prospect of reducing motorcycle-related fatalities could be a significant step towards that target.

Although Honda has been equipping some Gold Wings with airbags across two generations of the bike, starting in 2006, the technology hasn't spread. Autoliv believes that by applying airbags to small-capacity bikes and scooters - the sort of vehicles that are vastly popular in places like China and India - there's scope to save a large number of lives. In those markets there's a lower use of helmets and a large proportion of motorcycle traffic is concentrated in cities, which means there are a lot of crashes where a car pulls out in front of a motorcycle, causing a direct frontal impact for the bike. It's in those circumstances that airbags promise to be particularly helpful.

The Autoliv airbag system is generally similar to the one on the Honda Gold Wing, inflating a bag in front of the rider when it senses a frontal impact. It's suited to scooters and most motorcycles with upright riding positions (sports bikes with a forward-biased riding position are a tougher challenge because the rider's head is closer to the point of impact - reducing the time in which an airbag can be inflated). 

The system is made up of sensors, a wiring harness, an electronic control unit and the airbag itself - which uses an electric signal to start a chemical reaction that fills the bag with gas in milliseconds, just like those in cars. Because the technology is similar to car airbags, it can be cheap enough to be fitted even to low-cost bikes and scooters. 

The challenge, which Autoliv appears to have solved, is to get the airbags to react fast enough once an impact is detected: bikes don't have the long bonnets and crumple zones of cars, so the time between initial impact and setting off the airbag is extremely limited.

While airbags are only intended to be effective in frontal crashes, Autoliv sees them as part of a holistic safety solution. The company is also developing worn airbags, to be fitted in vests or even in backpacks, and has also teamed up with Airoh to develop a helmet-mounted airbag system. However, the motorcycle-mounted bags are likely to be the most effective in reducing deaths and injuries as they don't rely on the rider to make sure he or she is wearing all the right kit.

Given the existing relationship between Autoliv and Piaggio, it's likely that the first production versions of the airbag will appear on bikes from one of the Italian manufacturer's brands, which also include Aprilia, Vespa and Moto Guzzi. In 2022, Piaggio showed a prototype airbag-equipped version of the MP3 scooter at EICMA in Milan, so there's a strong chance that will be among the first models to get the system.

However, Autoliv is also expected to offer its airbag system to any other manufacturer that wants to adopt it, so in much the same way as many motorcycle brands use the same Bosch ABS braking systems, multiple companies could end up using the same Autoliv airbags in the future.

Maywood, Illinois based PCQ Technologies, a subsidiary of internationally respected motorcycle windshield manufacturer National Cycle, has seen one of its customers recognized in winning the International Cargo Bike of the Year 2023 award at the IAA Mobility Expo in Munich, Germany.

In an impressive field, manufacturer Electric Assisted Vehicles' (EAV) '2Cubed' eCargo (a van-replacing cargo bike) was recognized by the judges for its "ride experience and productivity-enhancing features."

Brake/Mechanical Clutch Control Kits 

Drag Specialties handlebar control kits include master cylinders that accept OEM-style rebuild kits and have clearance to work with all 1 1/4" diameter handlebars. The complete kits include a dual-disc master cylinder assembly along with a clutch lever assembly. 

The kit is designed to work with stock and most custom switch housings that accept OEM switches and wires. It is available in chrome or black for '21-'23 FLHT/FLHX/FLHR models. 

Predator Seats

This seat features a 6.5" tall driver support that gently slopes down to the passenger seat area and is designed narrower at the front for better leg clearance. It is constructed with a high-quality automotive-grade vinyl cover and molded polyurethane foam for maximum comfort and styling. The 3/16" thermoformed ABS seat base gives the perfect fit while the carpeted bottom protect the bike's paint.

Replacement Piston Ring Sets

Drag Specialties replacement piston rings are designed for use with Drag Specialties replacement and OEM pistons, and the DS brand piston rings feature high-quality moly top rings. They are available in standard and oversize bore sizes, up to +.020" (standard replaces OEM #21936-99, +.005" replaces OEM #21937-99, and +.010" replaces OEM #21938-99). 

Each set includes enough rings for two pistons and is made to fit '99-'06 Twin Cam 88" pistons with a 3.750" bore. 

Coil Cover

This cover is constructed from smooth stamped steel with a gloss black finish. It is designed to fit most OEM-style coils found on 1999 to 2005 carbureted Dyna Glide models (replaces OEM #31644-99). 

ABS Brake Sensors

M-8 Shifter Shaft Bushing Tool

In 2017, Harley-Davidson launched the Milwaukee-Eight powertrain. Included in this powertrain upgrade, the inner primary shifter shaft bushing was redesigned to a thin wall bushing. 

Although this was a design improvement, over time, this bushing will wear causing free play in the shifter shaft. Ultimately, the shaft, lever and pedal vibrate when in use, causing a rattle noise and loose shifter. The shifter shaft bushing cannot be pressed through to remove it - requiring this JIMS specialty tool. 

This new tool is designed to remove the old bushing with a unique knurled driver and receiver cup. A new installation driver is included in the kit to correctly install a new shifter shaft bushing to the proper depth. 

"Once complete, the shift lever will function like new again. Removing this bushing without a proper tool is challenging due to the bushing's thin wall design, which could result in costly damage to the inner primary. Removing the bushing with this new tool makes the replacement process easy and quick. This tool is a must for any mechanic servicing aging H-D touring models."

Hawg Halters has added to its Renegade Wheels brand with the addition of its DM7S for the H-D touring market.

A new performance Bagger 7-spoke custom wheel design, it is available in a full range of standard and popular wide tire sizes such as 21 x 5.5, 23 x 5.5 and 26 x 5.5. 

The wheels are CNC machined from 6061-T6 billet aluminium, using the standard HHI/Renegade hub design with multiple fitment options. They are available in chrome, anodized black, Inca Gold, Aztec Red and Cobalt Blue finishes, matching 11.8 and 13-inch true floating brake rotors are also offered.
