Gaslock

Gaslock J164 Radiator Caps

Noted for its high-tech precision engineering, advanced design and quality materials, German manufacturer Gaslock's new motorcycle radiator cap offers a unique and stylish look for Harley-Davidson water-cooled models.

They are easy to handle and install and designed with a unique stainless-steel screen and beautiful UV resistant, fade free red anodized ring. Fitted with replaceable seals, this radiator cap is designed for Harleys but will fit a vast array of most water-cooled motorcycles.

Designed to open and relieve high temperature pressures at 20 psi or 1.4 bar, coolant escapes into a small holding tank. Once the coolant temperature reduces, a vacuum is created, and the coolant returns into the cooling system.

Available with outer ring and breather mesh colorway options

At 20 psi (1.4 bar), the coolant is allowed to maintain a higher boiling point temperature - due to higher pressures. This is a matter of physics. It is critical to control the pressure in order to ensure the integrity of the coolant system. These specifications meet SAE J164 standards.

The Gaslock radiator cap has been designed and tested extensively over thousands of cycles. Each new cap is tested after assembly before shipping, to ensure it is functioning properly and given a laser etched date code.

In addition to its standard product range, Gaslock can provide capabilities for specific designs for your needs. It can offer several different processes - including laser etch, CNC machining, anodizing and paint – and offer extensive laser etched and electro-formed design options and details. The company is open to hearing from customers to discuss preferences and needs in order to develop a unique radiator or gas cap to your specific design.

Gaslock has been in business for close to 30 years. The company's capabilities involve several different products for many different industries. "One of our specialties is the complete manufacturing of gas caps for the Harley-Davidson Motor Company. These gas caps require a high level of integrity which speaks to the versatility of our capabilities and extent of our engineering experience."

In addition to radiator and gas caps, Gaslock's additional product lines include accessory parts and level indicators.

Successful brand cultures can no longer be monocultures

The recent power struggle at Harley-Davidson has been one of the most unedifying spectacles in recent U.S. corporate history - certainly the most embarrassing outbreak of boardroom incompetence and self-interest in Harley's history.

Those whose fingerprints have been on this saga - on either side of the arguments - should hang their heads in shame and crawl into a deep, dark, cold space under a 'Rock of Shame'. They should be doomed to forever dwell in a cave of darkness, a "Bog of Eternal Stench"!

I am writing this the day after Harley's May 14 annual shareholder meeting. One that shunned the once former practice of making such meetings a celebration of brand and corporate culture. Instead, the opaque, paranoid Zeitz era resulted in this highly controversial 'gathering' being no kind of 'gathering' at all.

It was almost Stalinist in its closely controlled stage management - at an undisclosed location, online only and restricted to shareholders of record only. Unlike the meetings of yore, brand loyalists and enthusiasts who have the ultimate 'skin in the game' were certainly not welcome.

These days this isn't an unusual way for corporations to try to exert control over their deliberations - the 'cone of silence' is their friend. But at this time the board needs all the friends it can find. From the Harley board's point of view the way the proceedings played-out must have felt like a pretty unfriendly environment - borderline toxic in fact.

However, those on the other side of the aisle who were seeking the board's ouster (or at least seeking the blood of three of the most prominent board members) have no reason to be quite as self-congratulatory about the outcomes as their spin suggests they are entitled to be.

By the primary interpretation, Harley won and H Partners lost. But, in reality, there were no winners,H Partners have played a shoddy game of 'Hedgie Hubris' throughout. Yes, the three directors that they wanted out - Zeitz, Linebarger and Levison - will all now have resigned from the board of Harley-Davidson Inc. by the next annual shareholder meeting (May 2026), but as the second largest shareholder in HDI (9.3%) H Partners have no justification for claiming "a clear referendum for change."

Though the outcomes of the meeting met their specific objectives, whatever happens now it is the interests of Harley-Davidson's dealers that are the ones that need to be put back into the crosshairs.

When you buy shares in an engineering-based company such as Harley, the primary asset value you are investing in is the ability of the dealer network to sell the product and earn money for all concerned. The ability of the workforce to build a product that is fit for purpose, and the ability of engineering teams to develop products that the ultimate brand ambassadors in this equation - the riders who buy the products - actually want.

Hello H Partners - it is not, in fact, all about you. It is not in fact about how smart you are (or are not) in making investment decisions. "Freeing the Eagle" is not about recouping your investment, that luxury doesn't come until the dealers, employees and engineers have been freed to do their thing.

For my money, the whole board should have voluntarily submitted their resignation the moment the 2024 annual results were published on May 1, 2025.

They should have been replaced by an interim Board of Directors consisting of one representative form the largest shareholder as interim Chairman (Blackrock - step forward Larry Fink, or his anointed Padawan learner); Jonathan Root (the present CFO and President, Commercial) as interim President - maybe, ultimately, as CEO; Chief Engineer Ben Wright; Michael Edmunds, the present VP Motorcycle Operations; a representative chosen by the dealer network and with Paul James and Bill Davidson as the 'Keepers of The Flame'.

"it's about the dealers, stupid"

Yes, the next CEO should be from outside of the company, but it should be someone from the inside the Motorcycle Industry - Rod Copes maybe? Scott Miller? If not an American, then the company and its followers should not hold their noses at the thought of someone from the Japanese or European motorcycle industries.

The worst that could happen by recruiting a CEO from within the international motorcycle industry would be that, for what I think would be the first time ever, Harley would have someone who has looked at the motorcycle industry from the inside, but through a non-Milwaukee lens. Someone who knows the motorcycle industry from a wider perspective. Someone who understands the Harley brand's weaknesses and strengths from seeing it being operated in a competitive context.

If that individual had also spent time rising through the ranks elsewhere with dealer development chops, then all the better.

The only way Harley is going to be able to kick-start itself down the 20-year survive and thrive turnaround pathway that it needs to embrace, is to start building a company that can take customers from other manufacturers.

The primary task of any CEO is to build a business that is capable to redirecting as much revenue as possible from competitors' customers bank accounts and into his or her own balance sheet instead. It's called capitalism, it's called competing - it's not called sticking your head up your ass and wonder why the lights have gone out.

If somebody wants to engage with your brand the job of the CEO is to have built a business that offers the options the buyer wants and needs; to have equipped the sales network to be able to say "Hello, yes of course we can help, do please come in, you are welcome here."

Harley needs to embrace the changed attitudes that consumers will have (already have) to the motorcycle ownership and riding experience in the future (and yes, that can even include electrics - of the right kind, at the right time), but by definition that change cannot be found in the aging out boomer demographic and even given recent inflation, will rarely be found at north of $25k.

The successful motorcycle factories of the future will be those whose production combines several often seemingly irreconcilable differences of objective. They need to become multi-platform - regardless of what they are called - and they need to become multi-buyer in price-point and riding preference terms.

When it comes to 'making that sale', diversity of buyer and product offering are not your enemy. Successful brand cultures can no longer be monocultures.

RideApart.com has reported that Chinese automaker BYD recently unveiled an EV charging system capable of delivering a massive 1,000 kW of power, cutting recharge times to just five minutes. "This technology could reportedly add around 250 miles of range in the time it takes to grab a coffee."

PSB has reported that industry leaders have given high praise to a bipartisan group of lawmakers who reintroduced legislation to fully fund the Recreational Trails Program. A new federal bill that supports off-highway recreation will ensure full funding will directly benefit powersports and outdoor enthusiasts. The MIC, ROHVA and SVIA have all applauded a bill that would ensure that RTP funding reflects the amount of fuel taxes that off-highway vehicle enthusiasts pay at the pump. Though OHV users contribute an estimated $281m annually in fuel taxes, the program is currently funded at approximately $84m per year. The new legislation seeks to close that gap and better align RTP funding with user contributions; www.mic.org

In what is being widely regarded as a counterintuitive decision (an absurd decision in fact), The X Games has banned electric motorcycles. Jonathon Kline (rideaprat.com) reports that the showcase for stunting and riding style innovation appears to think that electric off roaders are too good! That they give their riders an unfair advantage over internal combustion bikes. So, apparently in the interests of "maintaining a level playing field" their solution to progress and improvement? Ban EVs. Way-to-go Luddites.

Motorcycle.com has reported that Melbourne, Australia based brothers Ken and Barry Horner, "creators of the succession of crowd-pleasing Irving Vincent V-Twins" which have dominated Australian Post-Classic racing since 2006, are building a bike to take on the established teams in the 2025 Super Hooligan race series. This 100% Australian-built performance bike will make its debut at the mid-season Laguna Seca round on July 11-13, ridden by reigning Aussie Post-Classic champion Beau Beaton. Motorcycle Riders Federation (MRF)

Autonomous Vehicle 'Domestic' Rule Change

The Motorcycle Riders Federation (MRF) in The United States has reported that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that it is updating rules to allow domestically produced autonomous vehicles to qualify for the same exemptions from U.S. auto safety standards previously offered only to import vehicles.

"NHTSA will continue to require car makers and other companies to report crashes involving self-driving systems while loosening some reporting requirements," the report states.

NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser said of the move that NHTSA is "actively engaged in developing a multi-faceted regulatory framework for vehicles with automated driving systems."

In response, the MRF says that it is still too early to know how these changes will impact motorcyclists, but that the move "does signal a push by the Trump Administration to remove previous restrictions on self-driving vehicles.

"For the last decade, the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) has been raising concerns that this new technology may be unable to recognize and react to motorcyclists.  Now more than ever, the MRF will remain vigilant, work with our partners on Capitol Hill and fight to protect the safety of everyone on our national roadways."

Based on tests, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) has found that up to 50% of automotive ADAS (Advanced Driver Assist Systems) technologies are having problems detecting or recognizing motorcycles under certain circumstances.

S&S Cycle

Giving It Air - S&S Tuned M8 Induction Air Cleaners and Indian Touring Stealth Options

S&S Cycles' Scott Hakins says: "Air flow is everything in a performance engine and naturally it begins at the air filter. The factory M8 units are downright boxy and can be very restrictive." But Scott says that the S&S Cycle Tuned Induction Air Cleaner "utilizes two highly engineered laser cut tubes merged into a single collector and fed by a pair of high flow air filters placed directly in the air flow.

"The end result is maximum performance for your engine, ample room for your leg to sit tightly against the body of your M8 Touring or Softail model, and a stylish package."

Available in Gloss Black, Chrome, or Stainless-Steel finishes, "our Tuned Induction systems allow for a 44% increase in air flow over the stock element, providing bolt-on performance thanks to twice the filtering area.

"The dual smooth intake tracts are precision engineered lengths to increase performance and like all S&S Cycle air cleaners, our Tuned Induction system features washable and reusable high-flow filter elements that provide a long service life.

"This system is exempt from emissions tampering regulations under CARB EO# D-355-55 so there are no restrictions on shipping or installing these systems no matter which state you're in. However, just remember that this system will not fit on motorcycles equipped with fairing lower glove boxes or Twin-Cooled models."

Also seen here, for Indian Touring Models, "the innovative design, advanced materials, and focus on performance optimization means the S&S Stealth Air Cleaner redefines air filtration technology for high-performance engines.

"Engineered to deliver increased power, durability, and efficiency, it stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence in motorcycle performance. Giving Indian Tourers a unique look with a hint that there might be more than a stock engine in the bike, they are available with a Gloss Black Teardrop Cover right now, but with Chrome Teardrops and no-cover options to follow - so riders can use any of the S&S Stealth Covers that fit their style."

These Stealth Kits fit 2020-2025 Indian Challenger, Pursuit Models, and 2025 Chieftain PowerPlus and Roadmaster PowerPlus Models.

Bajaj Auto

Indian Conglomerate Bajaj Auto Is Now 'Effective' Owner of KTM

Despite months of industry speculation citing all sorts of different ownership end game scenarios, bankrupt Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM is now, effectively, under the ownership of its long-time partner and, formerly, 49% stakeholder, Bajaj Auto in India.

However, in the true tradition of byzantine KTM corporate structures, it wasn't as simple as someone in India simply hitting 'send' on a bank transfer.

First of all, Bajaj strung out its fresh investment until as close to the critical May 23 deadline for creditors to receive the (reluctantly) agreed 30% of the debt as possible (some € 548m/$626m was needed).

Second, Baja Auto in India hasn't actually used its, or the owning family's own money. The money has been borrowed by Bajaj Auto International Holdings BV, Netherlands ('Bajaj Auto BV') with the Dutch subsidiary taking out a loan in Europe for € 566m (approx. $646m) - facilitated and backed by Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase and DBS Bank of Singapore. Bajaj had previously provided an additional $200m of interim working capital.

A May 19 statement released by Bajaj Auto and another released by (former?) KTM parent company Pierer Mobility AG on May 20 confirmed that the finance was now in place to meet the requirements of the KTM AG court managed restructuring plan on time.

"it is dealers who will repay the loan"

This saga has seen the 'KTM and sister brands' (Husqvarna and GasGas) trigger some 1,000 lay-offs and needing to get its arms around over € 2bn (nearly $2.3bn) of debt.

It is KTM AG, KTM Components GmbH and KTM Forschungs & Entwicklungs GmbH that have been restructured and KTM AG that has been granted a € 450m/$514m loan by 'Baja Auto BV'.

Therefore, having been in financial trouble, KTM AG has been loaded with debt in order to escape being in financial trouble. While Bajaj Auto BV stands as principal for the loan, common sense dictates that the effective repayment capital will be bled from the profits that the dealer network generates for their OEM partner from future unit sales.

Most of that unpaid debt now sits as debt in the balance sheets of KTM's unsecured creditors (its suppliers) and investors, giving the 'KTM' balance sheets a significant post-restructuring boost of around € 1.3bn/$1.5bn from having been able to 'dump the debt'.

While the post-deal 'KTM' structure remains as complex as ever, what is now known is that Pierer Bajaj AG is the majority shareholder of PIERER Mobility AG with Pierer Industrie AG holding a 50.1% stake in Pierer Bajaj AG. The remaining 49.9% stake is held by 'Bajaj Auto BV'.

Subject to regulatory approvals, "indirect control" over PIERER Mobility AG will pass to 'Bajaj Auto BV' "until the end of May 2026." This may sound like an interim solution, but Bajaj holds all the cards here.

Among other changes, the Annual General Meeting on June 23, 2025, will include the formal departure of Stefan Pierer and the addition to the supervisory board of Bajaj Auto CFO Dinesh Thapar.

The MIC has published fresh consumer sentiment data (April 20) based on the University of Michigan's latest survey - and the findings are not pretty. Consumer confidence in the U.S. economy fell for the fourth consecutive month, bringing overall sentiment down more than 30% since December 2024. Buckner Nesheim, MIC Director of Research and Statistics, said these numbers warrant close attention - "the survey, updated monthly, tracks how consumers feel about the economy, offering insights critical for industries like ours that rely on discretionary spending. Feuling M8 Anti-Reversion Bagger Systems

Now available for 2017-2024 Milwaukee Eight Baggers, these Feuling Anti-Reversion Bagger exhausts are a "true high output 2-into-1 exhaust system for performance baggers" that are said to "get the most out of the Bagger M8" engine.

They feature proprietary exhaust technology, including patented AR Chambers that prevent exhaust gas reversion from entering the combustion chamber, allowing the use of larger diameter head pipes while maintaining high velocity gas flow. The Stepped Head Pipe has a 1 3/4 head pipe into the Feuling Anti-Reversion chamber, stepped to 1 7/8 then to a 2". The head pipes enter a true performance merge collector with a 2 3/4 exit into the straight can muffler where the baffle is stepped 2 3/4 to 2 7/8.

This is Anti-Reversion technology that has been incorporated from performance legend Jim Feuling's automotive development work dating back to the 1970s. Designed to increase power, throttle response and fuel economy, as well as reduce carbon deposits and cylinder temperatures, the overlapping bulb chamber inside traps negative exhaust waves carrying heat and spent gases.

"By blocking these waves, we also reduce exhaust gas from re-entering the combustion chamber," says CEO Luke Leatherman. "This creates a more positive intake charge and crisper throttle response. This will also allow for a leaner tune - increasing fuel economy."

Additionally, Feuling's Stepped 'Dogball' Muffler inserts (Patent #5,173,576) is a concept dating from the early 1990s. They are designed to minimize the drone/hollow noise that is common in straight through mufflers "by absorbing high pitch frequencies, a unique, deep tone is produced while maintaining inertia.

"This provides excellent low to mid-range torque and a signature high RPM note. The baffles are wrapped with stainless mat then fiberglass packing to extended packing life. The mufflers are finished with a high-flow billet end cap, tapered on the inside for optimal flow and sound."

The hand TIG welded system comes standard with 18mm 02 bungs; adapters are included to run the factory style 12 mm O2 sensors.

Options include short or long endcap length/shape, pseudo pipes (left side) for symmetrical look, hand brushed or hand polished show finish.

39th annual Biker Fest International

The Biker Fest International – "Beyond All Expectations"

Lignano Sabbiadoro, Udine, Italy, May 15-18, 2025

Initial estimates suggest that 260,000 bike riders visited the event over the four days of the 39th annual Biker Fest International in Italy – marking an unprecedented and unexpected success.

The organizers have said that the 39th edition of the Biker Fest International (BFI) was a resounding success – "exceeding all expectations. The four-day event will go down in history as a new record-breaking gathering. Not only because of the impressive numbers, but also due to the overwhelming energy that swept through the seaside town, welcoming enthusiasts from all over Italy and neighbouring countries into the party atmosphere and spirit of sharing that represents the true strength of the BFI."

There's no doubt that the father and son team of Moreno and Micke Persello, the owners, and their Biker Fest team, have again raised their own bar in terms of the event's critical mass. Publishers of a range of lifestyle magazines, including the long-established Biker's Life, they are perfectly justified in billing it as Europe's Daytona. In recent years it has grown to become a massive rally.

Every May it opens a season that they themselves close at the end of summer with September's Italian Bikle Week at the same, popular Italian Adriatic coast venue north of Venice.

Of the many highlights to a packed four-days, the AMD Approved Custom Bike Show again saw a stunning turnout of great custom bikes. One of the most historic Custom Bike Shows in Europe, it too exceeded expectations, rewarding the best of the more than 100 special bikes entered, all of which were of an exceptionally high standard.

This year, the show was joined by another promising new addition: the first Performance Bagger Show. This put the spotlight on the current trend: racing and sporty baggers, examined and awarded by WSBK legend and Feuling Racing's Ruben Xaus.

Live rock concerts, mototours and spectacular off-road opportunities, rounded out what has now become a genuine lifestyle rally that fires the starting gun on Europe's Harley and custom motorcycle summer riding season.
