Polaris

Polaris Reports North America Q2 Indian Motorcycle Unit Retail Sales Up

Polaris has reported Q2 worldwide sales of $1,853m, down 6% versus the second quarter of 2024.

North America sales of $1,584m represented 85% of total Company sales and decreased 6% from $1,677m in 2024. International sales of $269m,15% the company total and down by 5%.

Polaris says that sales were negatively impacted by lower volumes due to planned shipment reductions, negative product mix and lower net pricing driven by higher promotional spend.

Mike Speetzen, Chief Executive Officer of Polaris is quoted as stating that "amid a global macroeconomic environment that remains dynamic, the Polaris team has maintained an unwavering focus on advancing our strategy and delivering for customers and dealers.

"Polaris' second quarter performance is the result of our disciplined execution. There are many successes in the quarter to celebrate, such as revenue exceeding our expectations, gaining market share, achieving our highest second quarter operating cash flow in over 5 years, and surpassing pre-pandemic benchmarks in plant efficiency through our lean efforts.

"I truly believe today's endeavors build tomorrow's successes, and thus expect Polaris is well-positioned to emerge stronger and achieve our long-term plans for growth, industry-leading innovation, and greater earnings power."

It would appear that Wall Street agrees, even if not paved with gold, that the path Speetzen (and CFO Bob Mack) have Polaris riding is one of steady improvement. From a 10-year high of around $145 in April 2021, in just four years the Polaris share price (PII) has been as low as $31.00 (April 2025).

However, in recent months it has started to rebound and, as of August 12, 2025, it was at $52.28 on a market cap of $2.89bn. While Polaris Industries and Harley-Davidson are not direct analogs, the H-D share price sits at around $24.00 following its Q2 results on a similar, $2.94bn market cap –having been as low as $20.47 in April 2025.

In segment terms, Polaris On Road vehicle results (Indian Motorcycles and the Slingshot Roadster/'Reverse Trike') saw North America unit retail sales for Indian Motorcycle up low-double digits percent. That was against a backdrop of estimated North America unit retail sales for the comparable motorcycle industry being down low-teens percent.

PG&A sales increased 12%. Segment gross profit margin performance was driven by negative product mix, partially offset by positive net price.

The Company introduced third quarter 2025 sales guidance of $1.6bn to $1.8bn. The Company is continuing to withhold full year 2025 guidance due to trade and economic uncertainty.

Supersprox

Supersprox 'Super' Stealth Sprockets for Chain Drive Conversions and Performance Bagger Applications

Designed and made in Europe by Supersprox, this new 'Supersprox Stealth' range Cush Drive for Baggers and Touring is a must have power upgrade for those who are serious about getting their big inch power down onto the pavement, where it belongs.

A new 'must-have' go-to solution for those looking to build resilience into Bagger Racing Tourers too.

Cush Drive for Performance Baggers and Touring FL Applications

"Supersprox has engineered the Ultimate upgrade," says CEO 'DJ' Maughfling. "One that is specified to handle the power that today's Performance Bagger drivetrains are generating."

Available for '09-'16 and '17-'22 Touring models, these sprockets are CNC machined from high strength, lightweight 7075-T651 heat treated aluminum-zinc alloy (aka Ergal) - used in sprocket applications, the high strength, lightweight material minimizes rotational mass to maximize acceleration.

The all-aluminum construction (aluminum core and hub) with steel teeth is said to provide up to 3 times extended chain and sprocket system life, compared to aluminum sprockets.

Supersprox has been in the sprocket business since it was founded in 1959 by the father of current CEO DJ Maughfling. Supersprox became well known for its invention of the hybrid sprocket back in 1999. It has steel teeth, for long system life and aluminium core to reduce rotational mass. Over the past 25+ years, this sprocket has been used on the winning motorcycles at the legendary Dakar rally, 19 times. Its race proven material, for sure.

Earlier this year (at Las Vegas for AIMExpo) AMD met up with DJ just as he was completing testing and starting to science-out his sales and marketing strategy for the 'Supersprox Stealth' range.

Brandishing some freshly machined and finished samples, DJ explained the history and prospects for Supersprox' future in the V-twin market.

"I was in the US during 2023, attending national sales events for our key distributors. I was repeatedly asked about our range of V-twin sprockets. At the time, it was relatively modest and not as well evolved as it now – back then it was a market sector that we just didn't understand.

"What was obvious is that there was increasing demand and a widespread perception that the existing belt drives being offered for V-Twin applications, especially at the heavy-duty power end of the market, simply had not been engineered for the stresses they have to endure.

"Knowing just how robust and well-engineered our sprockets are, knowing the quality of our processes and our materials, it was quickly apparent that we had an opportunity to meet a genuine need."

Asked if the demands that big inch, heavy V-twins placed on sprocket durability came as a surprise, DJ said: "No. Even those of us who have historically specialized in metric and MX sprockets know enough about Big Twins to understand that they do make unique demands on the power transmission cycle, which is why belts have had such a big role to play in the development of Harleys.

"It's not that sprockets can't be made to be strong enough and light enough, it's just that there hasn't been sufficient demand before."

And now there is? "Yes. Where there is a need there is an opportunity and at the top-end of the market, throwing 800 lbs of Bagger around racetracks like COTA, Road America and Laguna Seca has shown that there is a need and they have created the demand for power transmission that gets the job done. Our sprockets are the real deal. Reliable, strong, durable and light."

The 'Supersprox Stealth' is a genuine range though, isn't it? Not simply a single sprocket option, right? "Correct. It is a genuine range with which dealers and performance engineers can reach a widespread market.

"We are offering four new items for the V-twin market. The most important, in terms of complexity, are our complete replacement cush drive hub and sprockets, to convert 2009-2022 touring models (Baggers). These bikes are pushing out too much power and chain conversion is becoming an essential upgrade.

"Our sprocket and hub are a complete plug and play combination, that allows dealers, racers and riders to tune bikes to much higher limits. The hub is made from 7075-T651 aluminium bar and CNC machined in-house at our western Ukraine factory. The hub comes with a 51T sprocket, installed. We can also offer larger sprockets if the bike will be used for stunting

"We have also made a really cool addition to the flat rear sprockets for Big Twins - FLH/T and XL models. There are generally two sprockets available, the first with 1.99" internal locating hole and the second with a 2.22" internal. We have made a neat insert, that allows the sprocket to be used for both applications.

This is needed, because the sprockets on the market are not currently interchangeable and it is easy to buy the wrong part by mistake, as they look very similar. We are offering these sprockets as 'Supersprox Stealth' (hybrid) versions and an all-steel sprocket, with the same interchangeable inner. They come in Black, Gold, or Red."

How about for the Pan America? It hasn't sold in great numbers initially, but it is very well regarded in ADV circles and riders who have bought it are loving it. It's even found favor in racing circles – trackers and Super Hooligans especially. In street sales terms it is regarded as a bit of a 'sleeper' whose time will come.

"Yes, and there is clearly a need for some performance parts to fit the Pan America 2011-2025. We are offering a 'Supersprox Stealth' (hybrid) sprocket version and an all-steel sprocket, with the same interchangeable inner - in 19-tooth for the engine and 48 for the rear. Larger and smaller rears are available on request. They come in Black and Silver, and we will add more color options, if there is the demand."

How about turn-key options? There must be great opportunities for complete kits? "Yes, and that might be the most important addition to our range.

"We are making complete packages for dealers and riders, with the addition of transmission sprockets. Honestly, it took me too long to develop the sprockets for the Big Twin Harley models, 5-speed and 6-speed bikes, plus Dyna Glides. However, the finished sprockets have many applications and will fulfil some demand in the market.

"We have noticed that the former "main producer" in US (PBI) is not offering the same range and Harley transmission sprockets, seem to be missing from their lineup. We can provide reasonably priced transmission sprockets in 4-different offsets - flat type plus 0.250", 0.500" and 0.750" offset. All in 530 chain size, with 23, 24, 25, 26 tooth options."

Overcoming Parasitic Drain in Your Motorcycle

Finding the source of high parasitic drain in a motorcycle is time consuming and frustrating. Modern motorcycles have additional 'always on' components requiring power to remain at ready for the (theoretical) convenience of the rider.

Any motorcycle with key fob and/or electronic settings (e.g. suspension, mode settings) that need to remain in memory, will naturally have a higher parasitic drain. The most recent trend of factory fitted luggage that can be unlocked by a key fob, adds even more complexity that can lead to unintended higher drain.

OptiMate 2 DUO

A modern BCM/ECM (Bike/Electronic Control Module) has a stand-by mode during which current draw should be very low, ideally in the sub 20 mA range, but it takes just one slightly malfunctioning component t (e.g. luggage locking relays, alarm system), or a keyfob stored on/near the parked motorcycle, to fire that BCM up to active status, resulting in a higher draw, sometimes up to 1 amp. This is without considering that electrical after-market accessories can also add to parasitic drain.

Says Martin Human of TecMate: "the consequence of high parasitic draw left unattended in a parked vehicle is a deep discharged battery that will suffer permanent damage, the deeper the discharge the higher the level of damage it may suffer.

"Not only can that mean a new battery, but it also results in rider disappointment and frustration that usually boils over to blaming of the vehicle and/or the dealer that sold it. Recommending the right charger for the job and the problem is very likely fixable - if the parasitic drain is less than 1 amp. For context, a parasitic drain of 100 mA results in a loss of 0.2 Ah daily."

OptiMate 6 Ampmatic

Martin's experience and research with motorcycle electrics has resulted in an ever-evolving range of TecMate battery chargers, maintainers and conditioners that can meet the rider's needs and deal with parasitic draw issues.

The OptiMate 2 DUO delivers 2 Amps of charge current, designed to overcome high parasitic drain, whether it is unintended or deliberate. It also charges and maintains both lead-acid (flooded/VRLA/AGM/GEL) and lithium (LFP / LiFePO4) motorcycle batteries. It is TecMate's BRONZE category charger perfect for the rider that might say 'I have no idea, nor do I care, what battery I have', I just want to keep it charged and ready. OptiMate 2 DUO also comes in a two-station and four-station format.

If a smarter battery charger is required, one that can additionally save 'dead-flat' batteries from as low as 0.5V then the OptiMate 4 Quad Program delivers 1.25 A of charge current and is the "ultimate charger for the discerning rider that prefers to choose exactly the right mode for their motorcycle.

6 A Ampmatic lithium

"If faster charging of any 12V lead-acid battery is a requirement, the OptiMate 6 Ampmatic (TM36x series) is the right choice. With its Ampmatic software, not only does it adjust current from its maximum of 6 amps to a lower level to match the size or condition of the connected battery, it also regulates charge voltage to ambient temperature, necessary if the battery is stored in extreme temperatures (below -10°C or above 35°C) - voltage is adjusted lower when hotter, higher when colder.

"The '6A Ampmatic' lithium equivalent is the OptiMate Lithium 4s 6A (TM39x series) with a unique Lithium Ampmatic software that also adjusts current according to battery size or condition, as well regulating charge current in extreme ambient temperatures (below 0°C or above 40°C). This product is globally recommended by both Honda and Suzuki for lithium engine start batteries in their vehicles.

"Sometimes 'more power' does solve the problem!"

Harley-Davidson

H-D Q2 North America retail down -17% global shipments -28%; HDFS Deal with KKR and PIMCO

Harley's embrace of 'other people's money' deepened, in parallel with its ongoing collapse in unit sales in Q2, when it sold some 10% of its HDFS (Harley-Davidson Financial Services) loan book equity to tow United States investment houses - New York based KKR (Kraus Kohlberg Roberts) and Allianz, Germany subsidiary PIMCO (Pacific Investment Management Company, Newport Beach, California) in a needed cash generation move.

HDFS has agreed to sell each of the two investors a 4.9% common equity interest to investment vehicles managed by KKR and PIMCO with HDFS agreeing to sell approximately two-thirds of HDFS future retail loan originations at a premium on an annual basis for five years.

The transaction is projected to unlock $1.25bn in discretionary cash, representing approximately 40% of Harley-Davidson's (shockingly low) current market capitalization of around $2.9bn. HDFS has agreed to sell over $5bn of existing gross consumer retail loan receivables and residual interests in securitized consumer loan receivables at a premium.

The KKR and Pimco transaction values the HDFS business at approximately 1.75x post transaction book value. HDFS expects to use a portion of the proceeds to reduce indebtedness to optimize its post transaction capital structure. HDFS operating income margin was 27.1%. Based on the HDFS transaction, Harley says it now expects HDFS operating income of $525-550 million for full year 2025.

Meanwhile, back at the day job that is supposed to make such financial gymnastics unnecessary, Q2 saw Harley delivering diluted EPS of $0.88 with HDMC operating income margin of 5.9% on revenue that was down by 23% year-over-year, with global motorcycle shipments down a massive 28% - "due primarily to planned dealer inventory reduction and soft demand". This in a market where Harley reports global motorcycle retail sales down 15% year-over-year.

Harley's global dealer inventories were also down by 28%, compared to Q2 2024 - "as we continued to prioritize reducing global dealer inventory".

The cost of new or increased tariffs implemented in 2025 was put at $13m in Q2 of 2025.

Despite Q2 revenue coming in ahead of investor fears, Harley's profit margins came under pressure with consolidated revenue in the second quarter down 19% versus prior year. Q2 consolidated operating income was down 53 percent, driven largely by a decline of 69% at HDMC.

At the LiveWire segment, the operating loss 'improved' by $10m, which was 34% lower than the prior year's loss. Consolidated operating income margin in the second quarter of 2025 was 9% relative to 15% in the second quarter a year ago.

LiveWire revenue for the second quarter decreased by 7% versus prior year, due to lower electric motorcycle unit sales. LiveWire's operating loss of $19m, $10m less than a year ago, and said to be "in line with expectations".

Outgoing Chairman, President and CEO Jochen Zeitz was quoted as saying that Harley's second quarter results "continue to be impacted by a challenging commercial environment for discretionary products, and an uncertain tariff situation."

He stated that the cash from the HDFS transaction will be used "to reduce our debt by $450m and accelerate the $1bn share buyback program announced last year by the purchase of $500 million in the second half of '25. We also have the flexibility to invest up to $300m of additional funds into future growth opportunities."

Second quarter global motorcycle shipments decreased 28% versus the prior year. Revenue was down 23% driven primarily by the planned decrease in wholesale shipments and partially offset by favorable global pricing and favorable foreign currency. Parts & Accessories revenue was down 4% and Apparel revenue was down 13%.

Second quarter gross margin was down 3.5 points due to the negative impact of lower volume on operating leverage and due to the cost of new or increased tariffs implemented this year - partially offset by favorable foreign currency, favorable pricing, and favorable mix.

Seen here on July 12, the third day of the 2025 Homecoming Rally, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinal reported attendance of around 60,000 for the Veterans Park gigs - some 25% down from the 80,000 or so cited for 2024. The 2026 Rally is confirmed (at this stage) as another four day brand appreciation gathering from July 9-12, 2026.

Second quarter operating income margin was down 8.8 points due to the factors above, while operating expense was $2m higher than a year ago.

Global retail motorcycle sales in the second quarter were down 15% versus the prior year, reflecting soft demand and unfavorable consumer confidence due to a high-interest rate environment and an uncertain economic outlook.

North America retail performance was down 17%, reflecting lower than expected customer traffic at dealerships. EMEA retail performance was down 5%, with 'puts and takes' throughout the region. APAC retail performance was down 21%, with significant weakness in China and Japan. Latin America experienced modest declines.

HDFS' operating income decreased by less than $2m in the second quarter or 2% versus prior year. This was due to lower net interest income and higher operating expenses, partially offset by a lower provision for credit losses and higher other income, as financing receivables declined modestly.

Interest expense in the second quarter was largely flat. Total quarter ending financing receivables were $7.3bn, which was down 9% versus the prior year, due to a decrease in retail loan receivables and commercial finance receivables.

The YTD through Q2 saw Harley generate $509m of cash from operating activities, pay cash dividends of $45m, and repurchase $87m of shares (3.4 million shares) on a discretionary basis (with no shares purchased in Q2 2025). The company reported having cash and cash equivalents of $1.6bn at the end of the quarter. HDMC has continued its May 1, 2025 announced decision to withdraw from issuing a full year 2025 financial outlook.

For LiveWire the company updated its previously issued guidance related to Operating Loss to $59-$69m and a total cash use of $50-$60m.

The 'Spirit' Returns?

Five years ago, the outgoing Chairman, CEO and President's 'Rewind' document, the precursor to his 'Hardwire' five-year Strategic Plan, promised many changes that have since been quietly brushed aside or consigned to the dustbin of corporate footnotes and retelling.

One such was the decision to abandon trying to make profits from selling motorcycles at $10k or less. Never mind that in so doing the company was ripping up its used-units entry-level pathway premise – though hurrah for that.

It would appear that the 2026 Sprint will see Harley setting a third production line in motion in Asia, for an altogether new low displacement model – likely with the existing Pan America and Sportster S partner at Rayong, Thailand. It is thought that Harley is reluctant to embrace the established models already being built for them in Asia – for a combination of reasons, including but not limited to compliance and tariff issues. Chinese automotive and motorcycle manufacturing giant Qianjiang – manufacturer of Benelli, MBP Moto (aka Morbidelli), QJ Motor, Keeway and some MV Agusta models (the 'Lucky Explorer'). Qianjiang produces the X350 and X500 models for Harley. Seen here, Hero MotorCorp produces the X440 for Harley in India. Recently, rather abruptly and mysteriously, Hero withdrew its own 'Maverick branded X440 iteration from sale. Pure coincidence?

That premise was based on the pretext of not being able to make street legal offerings that were worthy of the badge for profitable sale at $10-14k price-points, or less.

The company has already confirmed a new $10k cruiser for later this year, one that in price-point terms will sit alongside the existing reduced pricing on the basic Nightster.

The new bike will be called 'The Sprint' and is set for a 2026 launch with dealers likely to get to see it in advance at some stage this coming fall.

Writing in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, MSJ and other news outlets report it is, effectively, bringing back the school of low displacement single cylinder thinking that was the foundation behind Harley-Davidson's 1960 acquisition of a 50% stake in the Italian Aermacchi brand.

The company was taken wholly into AMF Harley-Davidson ownership in 1972 before being off-loaded to Cagiva in 1978. The original two-stroke single cylinder Aermacchi Harley-Davidson Sprint 350 started to appear around 1969. The new Harley-Davidson 'Sprint' is expected to be a street legal four stroke single selling in the United States and internationally.

In the quarterly investment call at the end of July, Zeitz stated that it had been in development since 2021. He is quoted as saying "Inspired by our heritage and the spirit of the iconic Harley-Davidson Sprint Motorcycle, this new bike embodies boldness, irreverence and fun, capturing the rebellious energy that defines the Harley-Davidson experience." Someone needs to explain to Jochen that he can put the Kool-Aid down now.

"We believe this motorcycle will not only be highly accessible, but also profitable, marking a significant step forward in driving Harley-Davidson's profitable growth and opening a new path in future years for key markets."

It's a shame that what is considered true now wasn't, in fact, considered true five years ago. The 'Sprint' is likely to be made for Harley in Thailand. Shame Harley hasn't already had 350, 440 and 500 cc manufacturing partners and China and India for several years already. Heigh-ho.

Lyndall Brakes Doubles Down on American Manufacturing

More news from premium braking systems manufacturer Lyndal Brakes (San Marcos, Texas), who told AMD that the company is "reaffirming its unwavering commitment to manufacturing high-end wheel and brake components" entirely in the United States.

From initial design and materials sourcing to forging, machining, polishing, and finishing, "every step of the Lyndall process is done on American soil - and with unmatched precision."

Paul Kittrell, CEO of Lyndall Brakes said: "We take pride in doing things the right way. That means using the best materials, working with the best craftsmen, and building every part here in the USA - from start to finish. No shortcuts, no compromises."

Lyndall Brakes is the only brake company in the world to offer a lifetime guarantee against warpage on its rotors. "Thanks to carefully selected materials, proprietary designs, and manufacturing processes, Lyndall rotors are engineered to stay true for life."

The company's innovative "Bow-Tie Cut" rotors "are a testament to our pursuit of performance. Weighing just over 2 pounds per rotor, they are among the lightest steel rotors on the market today. Reducing rotating mass on a motorcycle improves throttle response, acceleration, handling, and braking performance - giving riders more control and a more responsive ride.

Lyndall Brakes has also unveiled the world's first truly monolithic forged wheel - "a groundbreaking product forged and finished entirely in the USA. Engineered as a direct plug-and-play solution for Harley-Davidson models, these wheels are a one-piece marvel of strength, precision, and weight savings. Designed to enhance performance while simplifying installation, Lyndall's forged monolithic wheels represent a new pinnacle of American motorcycle innovation.

"Our goal is to give riders an edge they can feel, whether they're carving canyons or hitting the track," Kittrell added.

"Lyndall Brakes continues to push the envelope with new product development, manufacturing techniques, and performance enhancements - staying ahead of the curve while staying true to American craftsmanship."
