Ultima Motorcycle Products

Ultima T-VO rubber mount Twin Cam is an 'A' Series bolt-in stock replacement

It has been a quiet market in terms of new aftermarket engine projects, and no surprises as to why. But having waited years, all of a sudden two have come along at once ... Robin Bradley got the Ultima T-VO story from Mike Garrison and Dave Sieve at this year's V-Twin Expo.

The Ultima Engineering and Machine Shop Crew: from the left - Mike Garrison, VP Manufacturing; Brian D. Brace, Program Manager; Tim Steinbach, Senior Machinist & Patrick Orick, Machinist

From there being some 15 or so aftermarket engine options at the height of the market in the spring of 2006, the industry is now down to a handful at best.
The irony of waiting so long and then seeing two come in quick succession was not lost on anyone at this year's V-Twin Expo - where Ultima Motorcycle Products unveiled their new T-VO, a patent pending design that is said to be a replacement for Harley's Twin Cam 'A' series rubber mount engines.

Mike Garrison - "We really have paid attention to detail, and placed reliability and durability at the top of our production thinking"

Ultima is the own-brand products in-house design and engineering division of distributor Midwest Motorcycle Supply and is headquartered alongside them at the new Arnold, Missouri facility they built and moved into around 10 years ago. Of the 15 or so engine makers that were around (in varying volumes) back in 2006, Ultima is a survivor.
Despite the timing of Midwest's property investment and the impact that the downturn has had on all distribution and engineering businesses, especially those leveraged in the engine game, the engineering leadership of veteran aftermarket engine designer Mike Garrison (remember his Enginuity 147 incher?) has seen the company "stay the course" with the Ultima program, and with the T-VO concept.

The Ultima T-VO is a direct bolt-in single cam replacement for the stock Twin Cam 'A' and is available in 100, 107, 113, 120, and 127 cubic inch displacements

Having squared circles to bypass the patent restrictions that Harley placed in the way of the aftermarket when it unveiled the late 1990s developed Twin Cams in 1999 and 2000, and done so with several proprietary tweaks of their own, this latest T-VO iteration is due to have started shipping by the time you are reading this, and with displacement options all the way up from 100 to 127 cubic inches there was a palpable sense of optimism surrounding their booth at Cincinnati this year.

The T-VO series is a single cam replacement for Harley's Twin Cam that Garrison says "dramatically improves durability and performance by eliminating a cam, two drive chains, two sprockets and a cam support plate."
Available polished, black or silver, Garrison says that it "will fit all 'A' motor applications from 1999 to 2006 with carburettor or Delphi EFi, but will not fit Magnetti Marelli EFI applications, and neither is it a replacement for the Softail style Twin Cam B motor applications."

This view of the bottom half of the case shows the combined pressure and wheel chest scavenge pump on the left, with the second cam chest scavenge pump on the right

However, with what he described as a totally new case design and two extra oil pumps "to provide 60 percent more protection," Garrison says that "it fits straight in to the stock chassis and there are several design innovations that we have made in order to address some of the well known issues that have affected the Twin Cam."
Those issues have largely revolved around the cam chest and its interaction with the rods, and with Harley's patents due to start expiring soon Midwest VP Sales & Marketing Dave Sieve is predicting a mini-boom in Twin Cam engine tuning and modification options.
"I'm not saying it will be anything like what we saw going on with engines a decade ago," Sieve told AMD, "but there will definitely be an uplift soon - somewhat of a parallel to what we saw from the late eighties and early nineties when everyone was all over the Evo engine because they could be. Harley hadn't wrapped that design up in patents in the same way they did with the Twin Cam, that was a lesson they learned.

The interior of the cam chest showing the reed plate and oil control plate installed

"There will be a bit of a spike in Twin Cam re-building in the coming years though, and while we have the components to help dealers, builders and riders achieve results with their old Twin Cam engines, with the T-VO we think we have a very sharply priced complete product that will be popular. Not having to modify the frame will be a huge factor."

This view of the front of the case shows the oil pumps and drive gears installed in case

Garrison went on to say that "the case, for example, features reed valve breathing and we have used a crank trigger that is based on an established Ultima three-piece design. There are elements throughout the design that are aimed at making all displacements as easy to install as a bolt-in stock replacement as possible - for example, the intake flange distance has been carefully maintained so it is spaced to accept stock width Twin Cam EFi and carburetor manifolds.
"We really have paid attention to detail, and placed reliability and durability at the top of our production thinking."

Electrical Connection

Lighting isolators for Indian and Harley-Davidson

Electrical Connection has introduces a new lighting isolator system for Indian and Harley-Davidson motorcycles that can be used to easily connect the lighting from a major motorcycle accessory such as a trailer or sidecar, while removing the electrical load from the motorcycle’s factory wiring, fuses, relays, computers and electronics.

The isolator system is a modular design that includes a separate sub harness, modules and the isolator. Its design allows flexibility to use a variety of trailer style types by simply swapping out a four- or five-wire sub-harness. The isolator can also easily be moved from motorcycle to motorcycle by selecting the proper sub harness and Can-Bus module, part of the turn signal and break light system for your particular make.

Proper isolation of electrical loads can help keep of the stock motorcycle electrical system and factory warranty intact.

Comment by Editor-in-Chief, Robin Bradley

So long Mr Wandell, and thanks for all the "tough-love"!

The news that 'Motor Company' President and COO Matt Levatich is to step-up to take Harley-Davidson's corporate hot-seat came as no surprise.
The much expected news came just a few days after the company announced its 2014 full-year fiscals. While Keith Wandell (the first 'outsider' to lead Harley-Davidson) will be no doubt be remembered for the impacts of the tough decisions he took soon after arriving at Milwaukee in 2009, he should also be remembered for the nightmare scenario that he helped avoid - a bankrupt Harley-Davidson engaged in a scramble for survival.
At the time he announced the closure of Buell Motorcycles and the re-sale of MV Agusta to its former owners, it has to be remembered that it looked like the world as we knew it was about to be consigned to the dustbin of history.
Regardless of the fact that the giant Indian conglomerate Hero MotorCorp has been able to pick-up a 49 percent stake in Erik Buell's phoenix EBR operation for a mere $25m investment, at the time it was a necessary "tough-love" decision.
Regardless of the fact that Harley bought MV Agusta for around $110m, spent another $100m or so on owning it for less than two years, and unloaded it (reputedly) for $1.00 - at the time it was another necessary "tough-love" decision.
Regardless of the fact that in the years following his declared aim of returning Harley-Davidson's focus to pampering its traditional core customer, the company has instead diversified as never before in demographic and platform terms, the decisions it made at the time were the right ones.
Nobody should be under any illusions - as far as any of us can tell, the choices that Keith Wandell made were selected from a pretty thin menu, and regardless of their specific merits or otherwise they certainly achieved the desired results.
So where does that leave Harley-Davidson today as it eyes the dawn of a new era? One in which "one of its own" (well, mostly "one of its own") is back on the bridge wielding big-ass binoculars?
It is axiomatic in corporate culture that thesis is followed by antithesis - that the new guy can only make his own mark by erasing all trace of the marks left by the last guy - regardless of how righteous they may be.
Will Mr Levitich fall prey to such odious convention? Those who know him say not. Those I know who say they know him tell me that he is ambitious, but rational; he is as much an admirer of the next big thing, the sexy new project as the next guy, but not to the detriment of a plan.

'his legacy is less clear cut than one might imagine'

His madness is method, and one can deduce much about his character by the way he whispered into a recent local Milwaukee area business gathering (something environmental if I recall correctly) on one of the Factory's prototype 'Silent E-Fellows". Somehow one can't quite imagine any of Messrs Teerlink, Bleustein or Wandell pulling such a stunt - well, actually, thinking about it, it is indeed exactly the kind of thing Richard "Change Meister" Teerlink might well have done!
Regardless of the platform, demographic and engineering decisions that now get taken on his watch, Levatich's new front-line will be drawn in a very different landscape to the one he has been accustomed to.
His combatants will now be his investors rather than his competitors, his product will be share-price instead of paint job. In this regard Wandell's legacy is actually less clear cut than it might first appear. They say that timing is everything in such rarefied air and it may well be that Wandell departed the battlefield toting his personal "mission accomplished" banner at just the right time.
Despite the excellent financial results posted by Harley-Davidson at the end of January, the underlying worries about motorcycle volumes, especially domestically, have left the company with a problem.
Its annual results and its annual new model introduction announcements are the two most potent weapons it has beyond share price and dividend with which to enthuse its investor community.
Last year's MY15 announcements in August barely registered on the share price, and the 2014 results have actually resulted in a net decline. Even the subsequent announcement of another big dividend increase to the second highest level the company has ever paid hasn't left as much as a footprint in the sand.
Against this background surely Levatich's worst nightmare must be that after shaking off the shackles of third party ownership in 1981, regardless of whatever the company has in its locker in new model terms, his legacy could well turn out to be loss of that independence.
There is no question that its moribund fiscal position continues to leave it vulnerable to various kinds of hostile take-over attempts.
While there may be white knights in the wings prepared to fight off such attempts (Warren Buffett just bought into the motorcycle industry in Germany with the acquisition of retailer Detlev Louis), the chances are that raiders will be looking for a short-term flip rather than long-term contribution to an American institution.
Whatever it takes, Levatich has got to get Harley's share price moving decisively in the right direction again, and soon. Maybe buying before being bought will be Levatich's answer - after all, thwarted in their attempts to buy Ducati, it was Levatich who was dispatched to Europe to try and make sense of the MV Agusta purchase in the first place, so "he has game".

S&S Cycle

S&S Power Tune Performance Exhaust

In addition to its engines, performance components and tuning options, S&S has offered a selection of exhausts for at least a decade. Their Tourer and Sportster applications have been the most popular, and the mission has been to offer exhaust options that are matched to S&S performance solutions.

However, the company is now taking the four steps to Proven Performance Program up a notch with the harnessing  of their POWER TUNE brand exhausts that will see contemporary exhaust technology used in a range that can earn its place in a dealer's locker either as 'stand-alone' performance tuning options, or as part of a wider systematic performance upgrade.

The Power Tune Performance Exhaust mufflers are chrome plated or black ceramic coated 16-gauge steel outer shell. This houses a formed-steel expansion chamber that is said to boost the all important mid-range torque where riders need it most.
Fiberglass acoustic packing dampens unwanted high frequency sound and provides a thermal barrier between the exhaust gases and the outer shell.
Stainless steel wool acts as a protective barrier between the hot exhaust gases and the fiberglass acoustic material. The perforated steel tube allows high frequency sound to pass through to be absorbed by the fiberglass acoustic material.
The spiral louvered baffle creates the appropriate amount of back pressure to the exhaust system and provides for the desired sound characteristics. The end cap is made from 6061 aircraft grade aluminum billet and is chrome plated or coated/contrast machined with black high temperature fade-resistant Xylan - a family of coatings made of low friction, wear resistant fluoropolymer composites and reinforcing binder resins.

Power Tune Dual Headers have been designed for use on ‘95-onward Harley-Davidson Touring bikes and ‘09-‘13 Tri Glide models. The pipes have a hidden crossover and are said to be good for an extra 8hp compared to stock. The rear header design moves the hot pipe away from the passenger for added comfort, and 220-degree coverage chrome or black ceramic finish heat shields are included. S&S specify high quality lifetime guaranteed American made 'Jet Hot' ceramic coatings that are said to protect from corrosion while increasing horsepower by reducing friction and heat.

S&S Power Tune Performance Exhausts include complete systems for ‘04-later Sportster, Softail and Dyna models, featuring a hidden crossover, a 2-1/2in diameter, 220-degree coverage heat shield and choice of finishes and end caps.

The headers, also in 16-gauge steel, are compatible with all stock and slip-on dual mufflers for Baggers and are supplied with oxygen sensor bungs installed (which can be plugged for carbureted applications).
Muffler options include S&S 4" Race/Tour mufflers that feature "an exclusive baffle design to provide the volume and flow needed to let high-performance engines perform at their peak" according to the company.

The mufflers are available in two versions - one featuring all steel construction, with a slash-down end; the other designed to accept a billet end cap. Both are available in chrome or 'Jet-Hot' black ceramic finishes.
Two styles of chrome or black finish end caps, with choice of straight or sculpted style, both feature a machined-in S&S logo; mufflers and end caps are available separately.
Along with all the Bagger exhaust options, S&S also offers a Power Tune Exhaust System, which is a complete system for ‘04-later Sportster, Dyna and Softail models.
The system is made up of both pipes and mufflers in a single package. The long dual pipes feature the S&S spherical port ends for reliable sealing, and are connected by a hidden crossover. The whole system is covered by a 2-1/2in diameter, 220-degree coverage heat shield, and is finished off by CNC machined billet aluminum end caps.

4" Race/Tour End Cap Options

Heat shields and end caps are available in chrome or high-temp black ceramic finish, and the pipes and end caps are sold separately. S&S say that all their exhaust options are manufactured in the US, are designed for race use only, and are not legal for use on emissions controlled vehicles.
