The organizer of AIMExpo has announced that "after the undeniable success of AIMExpo 2022" the American International Motorcycle Expo is to return to the world famous Las Vegas Convention Center from February 15-17, 2023.
MIC Events says that it is anticipated to be double the size of 2022, with Tucker Powersports to expand its co-located annual dealer show.

"Powersports is in the midst of incredible innovation and growth, and AIMExpo 2023 will be at the forefront, providing a place for our industry to gather, learn, and strategize about the future," said Erik Pritchard, President and CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Council. "The brands showcased on the show floor, including Tucker, are a demonstration of their commitment to work with us to advance our industry."
Disruptive Thinking, the main-stage education platform launched last year, on the show floor will return with MIC Symposium-inspired content and will "headline thought leaders, industry experts, and influencers.  Renowned presenters including Tony Gonzalez and Sam Dantzler of Garage Composites will share content designed to make dealers think outside the box and beyond the doors of their dealerships."

 

Continuing the focus on "the business of your business," AIMExpo Dealer Education will also offer classroom-style education off the show floor. These educational sessions will provide core business solutions related to sales and marketing, and topics that drive the day-to-day business of retailers, such as F&I, staff retention, and consumer engagement.
In addition to the expanded educational offerings, the AIMExpo show floor will be more than twice the size it was last year. "Attendees will see a stronger focus on new products from the industry's top manufacturers, including an emphasis on the four-wheel market segment."

In 2023, AIMExpo will welcome back Tucker Powersports with an expanded display presence, dealer VIP activations, and one of the biggest highlights of the show, the AIMExpo Industry Party powered by Tucker. "Together with AIMExpo, we made the 2022 show a huge success and we are working to deliver an even more powerful event at a time full of potential for our industry," said Tucker Powersports President and CEO Marc McAllister.

Andreani Adds Tools and Updated Misano Cartridge Options

Like all the vendors who decided to exhibit at EICMA in November 2021, Italian suspension specialist Andreani was glad to be able to get back to meeting its customers face-to-face; indeed, its continuously 'rammed' booth suggested that its customers were pleased to see them too.

The company showed a wide range of its speciality suspension tools, tuning aids and workshop equipment, with new or recent tool additions including a hydraulic shock spring disassembler, a combined top cap tool and an incredibly useful fork grub screw removal kit.
However, its new product highlights centered around its internationally popular and award-winning Misano cartridge kits. At EICMA 2018, Andreani unveiled a massive extension to its cartridge kit applications list, with the Misano EVO as an upgrade to its previous Misano iteration.

Pan America Titanium Slip-On Line Muffler

Performance exhaust specialist Akrapovic says it created its new Slip-On Line Titanium muffler for Harley's Pan America "to fit seamlessly within the lines of the bike, utilizing an established and tested design used on Akrapovic products for other popular models in the Adventure bike sector.
"This highly durable exhaust has a sandblasted high-grade titanium muffler outer sleeve with a stainless-steel link pipe. The handmade carbon-fiber end cap and heat shield follow the profile of the muffler."

Akrapovic claims a weight saving of 11.6% (0.5 kg) over stock. "Performance is enhanced with a power increase of 1.3 kW (1.7 hp) at 2,300 rpm and a rise in the torque level of 5.6 Nm at 2,700 rpm when tested on the Akrapovic in-house dyno against a Pan America 1250 with a standard stock exhaust."
Described as delivering a "deep and full V-twin sound" this EC/ECE type-approved exhaust also complies with the latest Euro 5 standards and needs no remapping to the ECU - it is a "simple plug-and-play installation and is compatible with the H-D Pan America 1250 Special version and with the original H-D side cases, saddlebags, and centre stand.

An optional Akrapovic link pipe developed specifically for use with the Slip-On Line Titanium muffler (for racetracks and closed courses only) is made from high-grade stainless steel, and removes the stock pre-muffler for an impressive 76.5% (1.9 kg) weight reduction over the stock version.
When installed with the muffler performance is said to be increased by 2.7 kW (3.7 hp) at 9,000 rpm and torque is boosted by 6.8 Nm at 2,900 rpm with no remapping of the ECU required. The EC/ECE type approval of the muffler is not valid if the optional link pipe is attached.

H-D Appoints an Additional Board Member

Harley-Davidson has increased its Board of Directors headcount from 10 to 11 - with the additional seat going to Rafeh Masood - who currently serves as Executive Vice President (EVP) and Chief Customer Officer at Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.

Masood joined BB&B in May 2020 as EVP and Chief Digital Officer and was appointed to his current role in November 2021, where he oversees marketing, digital and customer experience. Mr. Masood previously served as Snr. VP and Chief Digital Officer at BJ's Wholesale Club Holdings, Inc., overseeing its online and omnichannel business. Previous leadership roles included at DICK's Sporting Goods, Sears and BAWAG Group - an Austrian banking group.
Masood will receive a pro-rata portion of the current $110,000 annual retainer that the company pays to non-employee directors, as outlined in the company's Director Compensation Policy, plus a retainer as a member of the Audit and Finance Committee and company stock considerations.

A project by the Politecnico di Milano has set a new World Record for a self-driving car - on the strait of the Space Shuttle airstrip at NASA's Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida. 'PoliMOVE' recorded 192.2 mph/309.3 kph - "never before has a car driven by artificial intelligence alone been this fast". The previous record held by Roborace was 175.49 mph/282.42 kph. The speed was obtained as an average of over 1 km in two consecutive attempts in opposite directions (to eliminate the effects of the wind).

It is reported that California is planning a pilot scheme to test the feasibility of a "Noise Camera" programme. "Sound-activated enforcement devices are designed to activate when a vehicle noise level exceeds the legal sound limit, capturing a clear photograph of the license plate". Vehicle owners will be notified but only fined on a second or subsequent violations. The trial will run from 1 January 2023 - 31 December 2027 in six as yet unidentified cities. California already has noise regulations: max 80 dB for motorcycles, 95 dB for cars. A similar trial was held in Canada, but the idea didn't work.

In the United States, Fast Company (a monthly American business magazine) has honored the partnership between Zero Motorcycles and Polaris in its annual list recognising the World's Most Innovative Companies for 2022. The annual list has been widely regarded as the definitive platform for recognising the organisations that are "transforming industries and shaping society" since 2008.

Suzuki Motor USA, LLC is marking 20 years of manufacturing KingQuad ATVs at the Suzuki Manufacturing of America Corporation (SMAC) facility in Rome, Georgia. KingQuad ATVs first rolled off the assembly line there in May of 2002 and have continued to be built exclusively in the US ever since. Suzuki claims to have been the inventor of the 4-wheel ATV.

The Polaris Slingshot has been reclassified as a three-wheeled motor vehicle (aka an "autocycle") in the State Of New York, meaning it can now be driven with a standard driver's license. Meanwhile, Eugene, Oregon manufacturer Arcimoto is reporting that Alabama's Meadows Autocycle Bill means that three-wheeled vehicles can be operated there without a motorcycle license or helmet.

Fox Factory Holding Corp. has announced record quarterly sales of $378.0m (+34.4%) and record EPS of $1.13. Gross profit was +22.8% to $120.3m, gross margin percentage decreased 300 basis points to 31.8%; net income was $48.1m, or 12.7% of sales. Adjusted EBITDA was $71.8m or 19.0% of sales.

BRP has announced a CA$400m increase of its Revolving Credit Facility and an incremental US$100m term loan. That takes BRP to CA$1.5bn in total, plus the loan. Sébastien Martel, CFO said: "We are pleased to have been able to complete these transactions that strengthen our liquidity position. Our ability to complete these transactions reflects the strong momentum we have experienced."

Citing research, Bloomberg says that Volkswagen (already leading in Europe) is forecast to overtake Tesla as the world's largest Battery Electric Vehicle seller by 2024. China's BYD is expected to rank third, ahead of Ford, Changan, GM, Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz, with Toyota 10th. In a bid to challenge Tesla's $686bn market cap (almost double that of all US and EU legacy automakers combined), legacy automakers are unlikely to succeed in divesting BEV-related assets that are intertwined with their combustion operations and whose cash flows are paying for the transition. Volkswagen is the exception and is on track to launch an IPO of its Porsche brand in 4Q.

The kit includes six special drill pivots with brass knurled handles, an idle shot tool and a venturi tool for use on all years brass Linkert carburetor bodies. Drill bit sizes include #55 (1.3 mm), #53 (1.5 mm), #56 (1.2 mm), #42 (2.3 mm) and #72 (0.6 mm). The #55 drill bit is used by two different length handles.
Slot tool blade sizes include .017" and .009" for all carburetors. The 1 3/16" collar is used for M41 1 1/16" and 1 1/18" carburetors. Harley Q2 Unit Shipments -15% Due to Two-Week Production Suspension; 2022 Guidance Unchanged

As had been widely anticipated, Harley unit shipments in Q2 were impacted, to the tune of -15%, by the widely reported approximately two-week production suspension caused by a regulatory compliance matter at a third-party supplier.
Despite that, HDMC Revenue only down by -5% "with global pricing and growth with Apparel offsetting much of the negative impact from the temporary production suspension."
In fact, HDMC Operating Income margin was actually up by 1.2 points versus the same period of 2021 at 15.1%, which speaks to good management of resources, good price control, lower operating expense and lower EU tariffs offsetting the impact of the suspension.
Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, CEO and President Harley-Davidson, is quoted as saying: "Reaffirming our guidance for the year, despite the production suspension, demonstrates the effectiveness of our Hardwire strategy and the power of our brand.
"Now, with the suspension being behind us, we are fully focused on mitigating the impacts of the volume loss with the ambition to deliver on our Hardwire II goals, in year two of our five-year strategy."

As forecast by AMD, the original schedule for the SPAC floatation of LiveWire as an autonomous publicly quoted business (albeit still around 74% owned by H-D) continues to slip. The merger transaction between LiveWire and AEA-Bridges Impact Corporation is "now expected to list at the NYSE in late September" instead of mid-Spring.
In detail, Harley's Q2 results show Q2 HDMC consolidated revenue down -4%, driven primarily by HDMC revenue down -5% as a result of the production suspension in the second half of May. Consolidated operating income decline of 1% reflects 3% growth at HDMC and a decline of 9% at HDFS - due to an expected higher provision for credit losses as the credit environment normalizes.

Global motorcycle shipments were -15% at 48,200 units in Q2, with revenue arising down by only -5% thanks to global pricing across Motorcycles, Parts & Accessories, and Apparel (+39%) partially offsetting the decline in wholesale shipments.
Second quarter gross margin was flat compared to Q2 prior year. Global pricing and mix contributed approximately 6 points of margin benefit and more than offset cost inflation. Second quarter operating margin improved to 15.1% from 14.0% in Q2 prior year.
Global retail motorcycle sales in the second quarter were down -23% versus prior year at 50,500 units compared to 65,300 for the year-ago. North America was hardest hit at -28% (34,900 units); ENEA was -15% at 8,700 units; Latin America -8% (800 units) and Asia Pacific +1% at 6,000 units.
HDFS' operating income decline of $9m versus Q2 2021 was driven by a higher provision for credit losses. Total quarter ending financing receivables were $7.1bn, which was up 3% versus prior year.

The company paid cash dividends of $0.1575 per share in Q2 2022 and repurchased $64m of shares (or 1.7 million shares); YTD the company repurchased $312m of shares (or 8.0 million shares).
As stated, for the full year 2022, the company reaffirms its initial guidance and says it continues to expect HDMC revenue growth of 5 to 10%; HDMC operating income margin of 11 to 12%; HDFS operating income to decline by 20 to 25% and capital investments of $190m to $220m.
"The outlook continues to assume that manufacturing, logistics and material costs moderately improve in the back-half of the year as overall operations performance stabilizes and we get beyond the peak levels of inflation experienced in 2021.
"The company's cash allocation priorities are to fund growth through The Hardwire initiatives, pay dividends, and execute discretionary share repurchases."

SEMA has announced sales of Automotive Specialty-Equipment Sales increasing to $50.9bn in 2021 (from $47.9bn in 2020). The finding comes from the new "2022 SEMA Market Report," which is available for download at www.sema.org/research. Pickups remain the single biggest segment in the specialty-equipment parts market. An estimated 13.6m pickups were modified by consumers in 2021, accounting for a combined 31% of specialty-equipment parts sales.

PSB has reported that Mark Magarian, along with the existing Wild West H-D GM Michael Keeton, have acquired the assets of Wild West H-D of Lubbock, Texas as the former dealership owner retires after 17 years. With roots going back to the 1950s, selling owner Larry Hay acquired the dealership in 2005 and implemented an aggressive expansion, doubling the size of the facility to over 32,000 sq ft. He also constructed a massive 1.25 acre, all-concrete Rider Academy lot.

AMA has announced GEICO as the Official Insurance Partner of the 30th annual, 2022 AMA Vintage Motorcycle Days. The 2022 AMA VMD presented by Royal Enfield takes place July 22-24 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, with Biltwell as the sponsor of what is billed the largest motorcycle parts Swap Meet in the USA. This year will see AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer and 500 cc World Champ Kevin Schwantz serve as Grand Marshal.

Performance Brokerage Services has announced the sale of Open Road H-D in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin as dealership ownership churn continues apace. Finance industry careerists Lori Thiel and Pete Johnson acquired the store in 2007 and have now sold to long time industry professionals and friends and home towners Matt Chiappetta and Bruce Miner - bringing their total dealership count between them to four.

It has been reported that a new type of battery technology could reduce the charge times of electric vehicles from hours to minutes. Calculations made by scientists at the Institute for Basic Science in South Korea revealed that so-called quantum batteries would reduce typical home charging times of electric cars from 10 hours to just three minutes.

Texas based Volcon ePowersports has added distribution of Spanish manufacturer Torrot's line of electric off-road motorcycle products throughout Latin America, South America, and the Caribbean Region ('LATAM'). Torrot Electric Europa SA has a storied and impressive place in the Spanish and wider European motorcycle industry. Founded in 1948 by Don Luis Iriondo, Torrot got its start manufacturing sturdy touring and road bicycles. In the 1950s, Don Luis reached a license manufacturing agreement to make mopeds and motorcycles for the famous French brand Dijon-Terrot, creating Terrot S.A.E. In the 1970s, Torrot made good, popular motorcycles like the Mustang and the TT, powered by Sachs engines. Most recently it was Torrot's then Private Equity owners that sold the GasGas brand it had rescued from oblivion to the KTM Group. Since 2017, Torrot focused 100% of its model range on electric, catering exclusively on young riders ages 3 to 11. Models are produced in the company's factory located in Salt, Spain where it also manufactures the Rieju high-end MX range.

Porsche, Siemens Energy and a line-up of international companies are starting a pilot project in Chile to build the world's first integrated, commercial, industrial-scale plant for making synthetic climate-neutral fuels (e-fuels). Around 130,000 l of e-fuels will be produced as early as this year. Capacity is then to be increased to about 55m l a year by 2024, and to 550m l by 2026. The project will use wind energy in southern Chile. The fuel will allow vehicles with combustion engines, including motorcycles, to be operated almost climate-neutrally. Porsche has also increased its stake in e-fuels group HIF Global, which is planning a potential A$1bn production facility in Australia that will be modelled on southern Chile.

2022 King Of The Baggers

RSD's Bobby Fong Wins KOTB at Brainerd on the Indian Challenger
                                       
In a sensational turn of events at the penultimate round of the 2022 King Of The Baggers season so far (Brainerd International Raceway, Minnesota, July 31), Indian Motorcycle Racing, presented by Mission Foods, captured two King Of The Baggers podium positions.
Privateer Bobby Fong, piloting Steve Delorenzi's Sacramento Mile S&S-built RSD Indian Challenger, secured his first-career King Of The Baggers win, while Tyler O'Hara of the Mission Foods/S&S Cycle/Indian Challenger Team took third - sandwiching H-D Screamin' Eagle's Travis Wyman in second.

 

The sixth King Of The Baggers event of the season was nothing short of dramatic, as a red-flag restart rescheduled the event to end of the day and shortened it to five laps. Though during competition, rain on turn 3-4 ultimately caused race officials to call the race after just three laps.
Despite starting from the back row, Fong fought hard during the first lap to reach second. Without hesitation, Fong then made an aggressive move as he dove inside and stood up O'Hara to make the pass and capture the lead and secure his first-ever King Of The Baggers win.
"Congrats to Bobby and RSD on their first win. It was a well-deserved victory as the RSD race team works extremely hard to ensure those Indian Challengers are dialed-in and ready for competition," said Gary Gray, Vice President Racing, Service & Technology.
"This has been a fun, neck-and-neck battle throughout the entire season. With one race remaining, it's all on the line, and we couldn't be any more excited to head to New Jersey and give it all we got."
The result left Harley's Travis Wyman and his brother Kyle in first and third spots respectively in the Championship standings, with Indian's Tyler O'Hara in second and teammate Jeremy 'Jezza' McWilliams in fourth. The Brainerd result lifted Bobby Fong and the RSD/Indian team into fifth with one race to go.
That final race will see the season conclude at the Millville, New Jersey Motorsports Park, September 9-11.

Yamaha Wins Clash of Titans at 75th Peoria TT

JD Beach (No. 95 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT) solidified his claim as the leading TT rider in all of AFT by earning a second consecutive victory at the world famous SC2 Peoria TT presented by Country Saloon on July 30 at the Peoria Motorcycle Club in Peoria, Illinois.

While Beach ultimately went wire-to-wire to victory, the contest was in fact quite a tense affair with two-time Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle champion Briar Bauman (No. 3 Indian Motorcycle/Progressive Insurance FTR750) glued to Beach’s rear wheel pretty much throughout.
A five-rider freight train formed at the start, with Beach holding the lead ahead of Jarod Vanderkooi (No. 20 Mission Roof Systems Indian FTR750, who finished fifth), Bauman, Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle/Progressive Insurance FTR750) and Dallas Daniels (No. 32 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07 DT).
Bauman was the first to slip past ‘VDK,’ blasting ahead as they exited the race’s opening corner as he headed for second place; Mees (fourth) and Daniels (third) would shortly do the same. Beach took the checkered flag 0.492 seconds ahead of Bauman to improve his overall series TT record to five.
Peoria left Bauman just three points behind leader Mees (188-185), while Daniels was only another 13 points back. Beach, too, has new life, closing to within 30 points of Mees (159) after securing his second win of the season.

Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines
Before he was a full-fledged Mission Production Twins presented by Vance & Hines title fighter, Jesse Janisch (No. 33 Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson XG750R) originally made his name as a Peoria TT expert. In fact, that reputation actually landed him last year’s opportunity to earn his current ride - one that has subsequently launched him into championship contention.
While he’s clearly grown beyond the specialist tag, Janisch proved yet again he’s one of the very best there is at the legendary venue. He was in full-on imperious form, winning the drag race to Turn 1 and promptly building up a sizable gap before even completing a single lap.
Janisch’s fellow Semi winner, Johnny Lewis (No. 10 Moto Anatomy X Powered by Royal Enfield 650, second), was outflanked by Dan Bromley (No. 62 Vinson Construction/Viper Air Yamaha MT-07, third) in the first corner and then spent the next couple of minutes looking for a way back through. By the time Lewis retook second, Janisch already had more than two seconds in hand and went on to take a dominant fourth Peoria win by over 12 seconds ahead of Lewis.
Cory Texter (No. 1 G&G Racing/Yamaha Racing Yamaha MT-07) brought it home in fourth, with Cole Zabala (No. 51 Memphis Shades/Corbin/Vinson Yamaha MT-07) in fifth. As a result, Janisch led Texter 199-188 as they headed to the Black Hills with seven races left.

Parts Unlimited AFT Singles presented by KICKER
The four-race win streak of Kody Kopp (No. 12 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-FFE, fourth) finally came to an end, but with teammate Max Whale (No. 18 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing 450 SX-FFE) finally collecting his first victory of 2022, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing win streak now stands at five.
However, both KTM pilots found themselves behind Estenson Racing’s Trevor Brunner (No. 21 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) off the line. He ended up taking fourth, with Morgen Mischler (No. 13 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R) in second just 0.831 seconds behind Whale. Rookie Chase Saathoff (No. 106 American Honda/Progressive Insurance CRF450R) pulled off a last-lap pass on Ferran Cardús (No. 377 Roof Systems of Dallas/Bullet Strong Racing Honda CRF450R) to edge the Spanish champion for fifth by 0.008 seconds at the flag.

Next up the series continues consecutive weeks swing West, stopping at the Sturgis Rally for the Black Hills Half-Mile at the Black Hills Speedway, Rapid City, on August 6 before heading to Castle Rock for the last TT of the season in Washington (August 13); then on to the Sacramento Mile, California, August 20.
September sees the Springfield Miles I & II on the first weekend (September 3 and 4) and the Cedar Lake Short Track at New Richmond, Wi., at the end of the month (September 24). The season wraps up back in Florida for the third Volusia Half-Mile of the season on October 15 during Biketoberfest.
