Motorcycle Industry Council

Capitol Hill Fly-In - March 24 and 25

The Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC - Irvine, California) is renewing its annual invitation to powersports industry professionals to join its annual D.C. 'Fly-In' in Washington D.C. to influence legislators on issues important to the powersports industry. Here is the information from the MIC …

Why is the Fly-In Important for You?
FACT: Face-to-face meetings with your congressional representatives are the most effective way to educate and inform our law makers on the concerns and issues that are important to the health of our industry.
"Over the next few weeks, we will highlight key issues in D.C. that are of the highest priority to our industry and we'll unpack what they mean for you and your business. Here, we take a closer look at tariffs."

Tariffs are Taxes
Tariffs are taxes that are not paid by the Chinese. They are paid by you, your peers and your customers. Any time the government makes one of our products 25 percent more expensive, sales in the U.S. are hurt. Customers change their behavior and buying habits and purchases are delayed or simply are not made. Motorcyclists ride on tires longer than they should; they put off other needed maintenance; they don't buy the gear they need.

Tariffs are hurting the powersports business and putting riders at risk.
Items Captured by China Tariffs Include
Motorcycles
Motorcycle parts
Motorcycle accessories
Safety gear, including helmets
Tariffs on these products range from 15 percent to 25 percent and have the power to devastate sales.

Tariffs - the Back Story

President Trump and the United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Robert Lighthizer, have imposed several rounds of tariffs on billions of dollars in goods coming in from China.
According to Americans for Free Trade and Tariffs Hurt the Heartland, the China tariffs have cost U.S. consumers more than $50 billion since the trade war began in February 2018.
Two weeks ago, the MIC's Government Relations Office (GRO) was successful in fending off the second attempt to place tariffs on motorcycles, parts, and accessories from the European Union.
We also received confirmation that one of the items we requested be excluded from the China tariffs was granted an exclusion.
However, the fight continues with regard to billions of dollars in tariffs on Chinese goods.
The MIC's GRO has testified multiple times before panels deciding the fate of tariff proposals. The panels include the United States Trade Representative, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the Department of Commerce, and other government agencies.
Several MIC members have joined the GRO in opposing proposed tariffs. Come amplify our message on this and other topics with your members of Congress.
We can't fight tariffs without you. Register now and join a unified voice that is taking action for the benefit of our industry.
MIC members attend for free. Non-members participate for $1,000.
