Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials

Bonneville 2026

Weather and track conditions permitting, the 2026 Bonneville Motorcycle Speed Trials (BMST) - owned and operated by Delvene Reber (Deliciate Promotions, LLC) and co-staged with the AMA backed FIM Land Speed World Records (LSWR) - will be held from 23-27 August on the world-famous Bonneville Salt Flats in the American state of Utah.

The five-day celebration of speed is the premier event of its kind for motorcycles on the global calendar and attracts a large entry of riders hoping to power their way into the record books on a wide variety of machinery.

All record categories are gender-neutral and determined by the method by which the motorcycle is propelled - engine displacement, fuel type, cylinder count, and whether the bike has partial or full fairings. Riders aiming to set new FIM World Records are measured over a timed kilometre and after their initial down run they have two hours to complete a return run with the times combined and an average calculated to determine the official speed.

The BMST is based around two Bonneville Salt Flat courses - the Mountain Track and the longer International Track. The 2025 event saw three riders set four new FIM World Records, although adverse weather did impact on the number of attempts.

The most high-profile casualty of the weather was Chris Rivas who, piloting Denis Manning's BUB Seven Streamliner, had hoped to break the FIM-accredited motorcycle absolute Land Speed World Record of 376.156 mph (605.697 km/h).

His attempt had to be abandoned due to track conditions, but the Floridian is expected to return this year as he continues his quest to break the 400 mph (643.738km/h) mark.

Events While Bonneville is the most famous, similar land speed trials occur globally. Other notable events include Australia Speed Week, held on the dry salt beds of Lake Gairdner and the World Speed Trials - held occasionally at locations like the Lausitzring in Germany.

More on the KKR/Pimco HDFS deal: completed in late 2025, the transaction included the sale of roughly $6bn in retail loan assets and the sale of a 9.8% equity stake in HDFS, generating approximately $50m in proceeds and about $1bn in dividends to the parent company. Dealer-facing operations such as floorplan financing and working capital support are unchanged. HDFS operations flow through HD Credit Corp (HDCC), an HDFS wholly owned subsidiary, and its owned brands Eaglemark Savings Bank (ESB) and HDIS (HD Insurance Services). ESB began originating retail motorcycle loans in 2002, underwriting and funding all retail loan transactions for HDCC in return for an origination fee. HDIS is a commission-based independent representative for various insurance companies, offering motorcycle and rider protection products since 1993; it also offers business insurance coverages and services to dealership owners and operates Eaglemark Insurance, a 2023 founded wholly owned HDI subsidiary. HDFS continues to provide approximately $1bn in wholesale financing annually to its approx. 600 strong North American dealer networks. HDFS has been a high-return business for Harley-Davidson, generating an 18% return on equity in 2024 and averaging 21% over the past five years. The division financed about 139,000 motorcycles in 2024, totaling roughly $3bn in originations. See also Page 18.

Avon Tyres

Avon Cobra Chrome Whitewalls

Avon Tyres says it has "reclaimed its whitewall heritage" and that with full there is to be a full renewal of Cobra Chrome production following completion of a "full redevelopment of its iconic Cobra Chrome range."

The revival of its "whitewall heritage" represents what will no doubt be a popular come back of one of the Avon brand's most recognisable motorcycle tires. The move comes four years after Avon was integrated into Goodyear's motorcycle brand portfolio alongside Dunlop.

"Cobra Chrome is positioned as Avon's flagship product for cruiser and custom motorcycles, and plays a central role in its renewed product strategy. The range is now offered in 77 SKUs, including 14 sizes featuring the characteristic white sidewall design that has long been associated with Avon's heritage in the custom and classic motorcycle sectors.

"The redevelopment of the Cobra Chrome range follows a wide-ranging industrial upgrade programme across Avon's entire motorcycle business.

"As part of this, the manufacturing of Avon's premium motorcycle tires has gradually transitioned to Goodyear's state-of-the-art motorcycle centre of excellence in Montlucon, France - a site already renowned in the motorcycle industry for producing Dunlop's premium road tires and championship winning racing products."

To enable Cobra Chrome production at Montlucon, manufacturing processes had to be tailored to the new facility. Many of the Cobra Chrome sizes were new to the French site with extensive re-engineering required.

"This work has resulted in improved tire uniformity, higher yields, better operator ergonomics and production quality that is fully aligned with Goodyear manufacturing processes."

Dmitri Talboom, Motorcycle Product Manager, Goodyear, explains: "To bring Avon production in line with Goodyear's quality and performance standards, the Cobra Chrome range has been extensively re-engineered. Montlucon's role in this revival has been crucial."

The return of Cobra Chrome's whitewall SKUs presented unique technical considerations for the Montlucon factory. The white rubber compound has been reformulated to improve resistance to discoloration, while the sidewall assembly process has evolved from a largely manual operation to one that is more automated. Computer-assisted quality checks have also been introduced to better ensure a premium finish.

Dmitri Talboom, Motorcycle Product Manager

Talboom added: "Whitewall tires are a defining element of Avon's heritage and remain a distinctive choice for riders of custom and cruiser-style motorcycles. We are proud to see this iconic design back in full production."

Avon Cobra Chrome now sits within a more streamlined Avon motorcycle range that also includes the 3D Supersport hypersport tire, Spirit ST and Roadrider MKII tires for sport-touring applications, Trailrider and Trekrider products for adventure use, and the classic Safety Mileage MKII and Speedmaster MKII products.

Cobra Chrome will be available in 77  front and rear sizes in 2026, covering 15-23-inch fitments, including 14 sizes with a white sidewall design. The majority of sizes are on sale now, with the remainder being released during 2026.

Baker Drive Train

Comptimizer Heavy-Duty Compensator Spring for 'Built' Engines

Haslett, Michigan based Baker Drive Train has added the Compitmizer - a Heavy-Duty Compensator spring designed specifically as a high-performance upgrade to the stock outer spring in modern Harley models.

"This precision-engineered component is the essential final touch for riders looking to harness the full potential of their Harley-Davidson V-Twin engines. The Comptimizer transforms the riding experience by delivering a quieter, more refined ride for both stock and performance-built machines.

"Technically, the Comptimizer increases the compensator's torsional absorption capacity because of the additional total spring force that it provides. By doing so, it improves performance on startup and initial take off by controlling low speed compensator shutter and starter kickback."

The result is described as a smoother ride due to the improved power delivery and a marked reduction in noise because of the increased spring pressure. All this, while significantly boosting the horsepower and torque capacity of the driveline.

"I see guys drop ten grand on a monster motor only to leave the stock compensator in there to get hammered to death," says Bert Baker, co-founder of BAKER Drivetrain. "It's one of the parts responsible for taking all that new torque, and the stock unit just isn't up to the task."

"We didn't release the Comptimizer to be a miracle cure for a beat-up drivetrain - we built it as a heavy-duty enhancement for a serviceable unit.

"By increasing total spring pressure, we're providing enhanced capacity and preventing the excessive fretting that kills components over time. It's a low-buck way to quiet down startup and shutdown noise and ensure your primary can actually handle the load you're putting on it. If you're building for power, this is the upgrade you don't skip."

James Simonelli went on to say that an upgrade like this is noticeable immediately and is also a commitment to drivetrain longevity. "The Comptimizer keeps sturdy internal drivetrain components in good shape with minimized wear, keeping a high-performance bike on the road longer."

The Comptimizer is designed for 2007-later Softail and Touring applications, as well as 2006–2017 Dyna models. For 2007 to 2010 Big Twins, the motorcycle must be equipped with the multi-piece "Screamin' Eagle" style compensating sprocket assembly.
