H-D Q2 - Worldwide Retail Unit Sales -3%; $1bn of Massive Cash Pile Will Fund Fresh Share Repurchase Plan


Accompanying its Q2 Financial Performance news release, Harley-Davidson simultaneously announced a plan to repurchase $1bn of its shares through 2026.
In H1 2024, Harley spent some $200m to repurchase 5.5 million shares on a discretionary basis. The new plan is in addition to the existing Board authorizations. The company says it expects to fund the share repurchases "with cash flow from operations" and that "this plan replaces existing share repurchase plans and is in addition to the $875m in share repurchases since 2022, that the company has [already] completed, to return cash to its shareholders."


Its Q2 results report that the company generated $578m of cash from operating activities, paid dividends of $47m and, as of the end of the second quarter, was sitting on an extraordinary cash and cash equivalents pile of $1.8bn - especially extraordinary when judged against a market capitalization that is currently down to around $4.66bn.
The afternoon before the release of its Q2 numbers, the H-D share price had been trading at around $34.50. That is set against a 12-month high of approx. $44.00 in March 2024 and a 12-month low south of $26.00 in October 2023.
The initial response to the Q2 numbers was mixed. A steep initial spike in share price fell away quickly, leaving shares largely unchanged at the end of the trading day despite analyst response having been largely positive.
Harley-Davidson Inc. saw Q2 revenue of $1.619bn, up by 12% over the year ago, $1.349bn of that coming from motorcycle and related sales activities in HDMC (+13%), with HDFS bringing in $264m (+10%) and LiveWire $6m (-8%).
HDI generated operating income of $241m, up by +9%, Q2 diluted EPS of $1.63 at an HDMC operating income margin of 14.7%.
Second quarter global motorcycle shipments increased by 16%. Revenue was up 13%, driven by increased shipments and improved mix, partially offset by lower pricing and foreign exchange effects. Parts and Accessories revenue was down 10%. Apparel was down 4% as the prior year's period included a greater benefit from anniversary product apparel sales.
North America motorcycle retail unit performance was down 1% at 34,800 units, while retail sales of Touring and CVO motorcycles was up more than 12% in the U.S. Touring market share of 75% was up 5.3% in first half of the year.



Internationally, EMEA was also down by 1% at 8,000 units (driven by weakness in Central Europe), with Asia Pacific down by -16% (6,300 units), driven primarily by weakness in China, with Latin America flat at 800 units. Worldwide total retail sales for the quarter were 50,000 units, down by -3% from 51,500 for the year-ago quarter. HDFS operating income was up 21% on revenue up by 10%.
Chairman, CEO and President Jochen Zeitz is quoted as saying: "Despite a challenging market, we are pleased with our second quarter performance, in which we grew our U.S. market share in a declining market, with notable unit growth of more than 11% in the important core category of Touring. We continue to be focused on executing our Hardwire strategy, leveraging our innovation and product pipeline, while delivering on our cost productivity goals."


HDMC second quarter gross margin was down 2.7 points due to the impacts of pricing and sales incentives, higher manufacturing costs and adverse impacts from foreign exchange. These effects were partially offset by higher wholesale volumes and improved mix. Second quarter operating income margin was down 1.5 points, where operating expenses increased modestly.
Harley disclosed that its average Q2 dealer inventory is headed back towards the historic 79,000 figure seen between 2015 and 2019. Having been as low as 29,000 in 2022, it recovered to 46,000 units last year and is put at 68,000 units in Q2, 2024.
Its new unit 601+ cc Q2 market share in the United States was 36%, with YTD at 38%. Domestic U.S. Touring and Large Cruiser market shares were 73 and 72% respectively for Q2 and were both at 75% YTD.
Harley has now narrowed its full year guidance, with HDMC revenue now slated to be down 5 to 9% from the previous forecast of flat to down 9%. HDFS operating income is unchanged at flat to +5%. Its Livewire unit forecast remains in the 1,000 to 1,500-unit range, with the projected operating loss worsened by $10m to $115m.
The company says that it continues to expect capital investment of between $225 and $250m for the year.

USA Q2 Motorcycle Sales -6.2%


The MIC has reported that among leading brands that contribute data, sales of new motorcycles and scooters decreased 6.2% through the second quarter of 2024, compared to the same period the previous year. ATVs decreased 4.6% among leading brands.


"Despite a general downturn in most categories, there are notable exceptions that provide reasons for optimism," said Buckner Nesheim, Director MIC Research and Statistics. "Year-to-date sales for sport bikes have surged by nearly 20% over 2023, while touring bikes have seen a significant increase of 7%. The sport bike segment is especially promising, as it attracts the youngest demographic of riders, potentially suggesting a strong future market."
Motorcycles and scooters accounted for 77.5% of total new-unit sales through Q2, and ATVs represented 22.5%. Sales of On-Highway models were 'essentially flat' during the quarter at 172,209 units (-0.5%). Scooters were -13.7% on low volumes (9,031 units nationally). ADV sales (aka 'Dual Sport' models) were down by -4.4% at 43,083 units for the quarter.
Off-Highway models were down by -17.7% over the year-ago quarter at 71,2745 units.

Malibu Boats Hires Steve Menneto as New CEO


After 27 years at Polaris, most recently as President of the Off-Road Vehicle Division, Steve Menneto has joined Malibu Boats as its next CEO.
As the Off-Road Vehicle Division President for Polaris, Menneto nearly doubled the division's revenue to $7bn over the course of four years while overseeing a large global manufacturing footprint. 

Since 1997, Menneto has held various positions at Polaris, most recently as President of the Off-Road Vehicle Division from December 2019 to July 2024.

Menneto previously ran Polaris' Motorcycle Division, during which time he drove significant growth, including building the Indian Motorcycle business from $3m to approximately $500m in revenue. Prior to that he held various sales roles at Polaris and early in his career, Mr. Menneto owned his own Polaris dealership.
"I want to thank Steve for the lasting contributions he made over his 27-year tenure at Polaris. We wish him the very best as he moves into this new chapter," said Polaris Chief Executive Officer Mike Speetzen. "I will be taking on more direct management of our largest business segment and am excited to work more closely with all the talented leaders and employees within Off-Road as well as with the dealer network."
Menneto stated: "I am honored and excited to be named Malibu Boats' next CEO. I have long admired the company's stellar track record, history of innovation and top of the line products. As I take on this role, I look forward to helping the company leverage its excellent growth opportunities.

Battery Support on the Showroom/Expo Floor

Riding his Team Saddlemen Harley-Davidson Pan America on spec Dunlop tires, West seized the lead from pole position, dominated every lap, and crossed the finish line 1.137 seconds ahead of the competition.

Sturgis TT: A Historic First for Downtown Sturgis
Sturgis, South Dakota, that small town of 8,000 residents, a town synonymous with the roar of motorcycles for decades, resonated with the sound of racing motorcycles on Sunday, August 11, as the inaugural Sturgis TT took place in the heart of the 84th Sturgis Rally. This American Flat Track (AFT) event (Round 13 for the 2024 Championship series) marked a significant milestone, not just for Sturgis, but for the world of flat track racing as a whole.


The Sturgis TT track was unlike anything seen before on the AFT circuit. As Cycle News described it, the course was "unique on the AFT circuit." It was a mix of dirt and pavement, challenging riders with both left and right turns, snaking through the heart of the city, with the finish line adjacent to the Harley-Davidson Rally Point.
The Sturgis TT featured three classes of racing: the 450 Singles, the SuperTwins and the debut of the Adventure Tracker Class.


Cameron Gray, AFT's Director of Sales and Partnerships, couldn't be more excited about the new class. "Sixteen OEM's currently have adventure bikes. Whether it's the Harley Pan America, the Triumph Tiger, Africa Twin or KTM, you put on a slip-on pipe, you adjust the suspension, get your handlebars where they need to be, take off the headlights and taillights, and you go racing. Very simple, very clean."
Triumph Tigers and a Saddlemen Team of two Pan Americas made up most of the grid for the Adventure Trackers.
In the SuperTwins class, JD Beach took home the victory, while Kody Kopp nabbed the top spot in 450s. Flat track veteran Sammy Halbert won the inaugural Adventure Tracker race on a Triumph Tiger.



The Sturgis TT was the result of a partnership between the City of Sturgis and American Flat Track, a collaboration that had been in the works for 22 months. Reflecting on the journey, Gray said: "At first it was like putting little pieces together like a puzzle. It's been 22 months since this started."
Gray and Gene Crouch, AFT's CEO, loved the idea of transforming the streets of Sturgis into a racetrack during one of the world's largest motorcycle rallies. It took the support of civic leaders and rally sponsors to make it happen. "We've been through, I think, three mayors since we started this, and a number of different council members," Gray noted, emphasizing the broad support the race received, and the complexity of aligning so many 'moving parts'. 


Despite the excitement surrounding the race, the day was not without its challenges. Midday rain delayed the schedule and threatened the race, but the clear skies that followed allowed final track prep and, with an adjustment to the schedule, allowed the race to run, with the final event completed just after sunset. While the rain drove away many who came downtown for the race, hundreds of fans stayed to see history made.
Several local businesses adjacent to the track took full advantage of the event by offering VIP packages, including balcony viewing, food and drinks. 

 


The impact of the Sturgis TT extended beyond the track. Insiders from Rapid City revealed that hotel bookings on the nights of Saturday and Sunday were higher than during a typical rally weekend. This uptick in bookings is a strong indicator that the race could have a significant and expanding impact on local businesses in the future.
Perhaps most significantly for AFT, and the rally, is the TV coverage on Fox and Fox Sports. "We're going to be broadcast on Saturday August 17... four hours of coverage for AFT, which will be the biggest we've ever had," said Gray, highlighting the event's significance.
The success of the inaugural Sturgis TT has set the stage for future races and possibly a series of rally-related races.

In a recent Schedule 14A SEC filing, H-D noted that "Balancing pay-for- performance with shareholder alignment is a hallmark of our executive compensation program." The filing went on to record the Human Resources Committee of the Board of Directors ("HRC") having approved a 2023 Supplemental LiveWire STIP (Short-Term Incentive Plan) payment of $1.5m for CEO Jochen Zeitz in recognition of his success in separating LiveWire from H-D, successfully standing it up as a separate company, and recruiting a highly qualified CEO for LiveWire in Karim Donnez - "in order to reinforce the objectives of The Hardwire strategy and successfully develop and implement LiveWire's strategies. The LiveWire spin-off in September 2022 was directly tied to a Hardwire strategic priority to lead in electric."


Polaris has released its 2023 'Geared For Good Report' detailing its "continued focus on operating in a responsible manner to support its employees, riders, communities where it operates and in the outdoors." CEO Mike Speetzen says the four foundational pillars of its 'warm and fuzzy' commitment to 'play nice' are to Think Product, Think Production, Think Places and Think People. All that "thinking outside the box" will have been good practice!


The troubled, cash-starved electric motorcycle industry continues to rack up casualties. Of particular interest to us here at AMD has been the announcement that the manufacturer of the premium spec and premium priced Arc Vector finally waived the white flag of surrender, filing for bankruptcy protection in the UK. Insanely expensive and originally funded by Jaguar Land Rover, it had already had to 'reorganize' at least once (in 2019 to our certain knowledge) and renamed itself Arc V Ltd. In 2021, CEO Mark Truman blamed distribution issues in the U.S. for its downfall. According to Visor Down, Arc has only ever delivered 11 of its stylish but over-ambitious and predictably doomed electric motorcycle project, including to Hollywood actor and businessman Ryan Reynolds and to Middle Eastern Royalty.


Not before time, and with kudos maximus to Yamaha, the FIM Women's Circuit Racing World Championship (WorldWCR) launches its inaugural season in 2024 with 24 riders using identical high-torque 689 cc Yamaha YZF-R7s as a 'spec' bike. There will be six rounds in 2024, starting at the legendary Misano circuit in Italy (Emilia-Romagna, June 14-16). After stops in the UK, Portugal, Hungary and Cremona, Italy, the series will finish with a Prometeon Spanish Round at the Circuito de Jerez - Angel Nieto, on October 18-20. Described as a "pioneering single-make series exclusively for aspiring female riders," it is a "a bold step towards inclusivity, offering emerging talent an equal footing with the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship." Addressing disparities, "it opens doors to benefits on and off the track. In a move that smacks of desperation and militates directly against the stated advantages of getting LiveWire production out of Milwaukee and away from Harley's conventional platforms, LiveWire operations are being moved to, yes, you guessed it - Milwaukee! The LiveWire team will be relocated to the historic Juneau Avenue site, which has been mostly vacant since the pandemic and where production ceased in 1973. The switch means trying to move staff to Wisconsin from its present Mountain View, CA. 'laboratory'. "We expect the consolidation of our operations in Milwaukee at Harley-Davidson's historic headquarters at Juneau Avenue to bring synergies and efficiencies, as well as a closer connection to our heritage," Karim Donnez, LiveWire CEO. H-D CEO Jochen Zeitz was rather more clear-eyed about the decision, stating that the relocation would reduce LiveWire's costs. The electric motorcycle spin-off brand's revenue fell 39% in Q1, even though it sold a few more bikes. Zeitz says it will cut about 10% of the headcount and 15% of the cost related to employees. LiveWire has about 230 employees in the U.S. The move should reduce operating losses by about $10m this year. LiveWire sold 117 bikes in the first quarter of 2024, up from 63 in the same period of 2023, despite which operating losses were $29m.

The Bagger Racing League (BRL) etched a new chapter in motorsports history in August, hosting its first-ever international race at the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (north of Bowmanville, Ontario) on August 10th and 11th. 


"Supported by the Fallen Riders Support Team and Pace Law, this groundbreaking event drew fans from far and wide to witness the thrilling action.
"Dominating the weekend was local hero Sam Guerin, who made history by sweeping the event. Guerin, representing Original Garage Harley-Davidson, captured pole position and took a commanding victory in Race 1 before sealing the perfect weekend with another win in Race 2. Guerin’s flawless performance ensures his name will be prominently featured in the annals of Bagger Racing League history.



The weekend’s racing was as intense as the weather, which ranged from wet conditions to bright sunshine, challenging riders across the board. The fans, undeterred by the changing skies, enjoyed competitive racing and a lively atmosphere, cementing the event as a highlight of the BRL season.

Indian Motorcycle featured on the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed hill climb course in southern England in July 2024, with legendary Northern Irish racer Jeremy McWilliams piloting the King Of The Baggers racer and Brandon Robinson taking his American Flat Track expertise over from the U.S.


Rubbing shoulders with the greatest riders, drivers and vehicles from all forms of motorsport, the Indian Challenger RR offered festival goers a unique chance to witness the thundering sounds of the King Of The Baggers racer as Jeremy McWilliams smoked the Challenger RR rear tire during full throttle rolling burnouts on the famous Goodwood hill.
"There's not many, if any, events like this anywhere in the world," said McWilliams - who also took in the Indian Riders Fest and 'AMD Approved' Indian-only Budweis Custom Show on his trip to Europe.





"Seeing these baggers racing on YouTube is one thing, but seeing and hearing them up close is something else, so it was great to put on a show with the Challenger RR for the passionate and knowledgeable Goodwood crowds. I think we've really surprised a lot of people with the sound and performance of the bike."


The Indian FTR750 hit the Goodwood hill in the capable hands of Brandon Robinson, who has amassed nine wins and 23 podiums over the course of the last five seasons and is currently third in the 2024 SuperTwins standings aboard his Mission Foods Roof Systems FTR750.
"Goodwood Festival, what's not to love? This place is insane," said Robinson. "I didn't really know what to expect. I've always heard good things about it, but then to be here, experience it and ride up the hill with all the nostalgia, the famous riders, drivers, and all the different machines that have been so influential in motorsports is incredible. This place is nuts. I've never seen so many people in one place for a motorsport event in my life."

Distinguished Gentleman's Ride (DGR)

DGR 2024 - Record-Breaking Attendance


Supported by Triumph Motorcycles for the 11th year, Sunday May 19 saw the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride (DGR) take place simultaneously across the world, with a record-breaking 113,000 riders taking part in 959 rides across 105 countries, raising $7.6m.
The top global fundraiser, and highest single fundraiser in DGR history, was DGR Brand Ambassador Jaime Camil from the U.S., who has been rewarded with a piece of motorcycling history, the iconic Thruxton RS Final Edition. Kat Thomsen, another U.S. DGR Brand Ambassador, claimed the 2nd spot, with Matias Seijo from Edinburgh taking third place. The Gentlefolk prize winner is Jason Etters, who led the Jacksonville ride in the U.S.


As part of the DGR's "Side by Side, Worldwide" campaign, Triumph dealers around the world hosted and participated in rides to help raise awareness and funds for men's mental health and prostate cancer research, ensuring even more motorcyclists were able to take part.
These included 541 riders who chose to raise funds and ride on Modern Classics as part of the official riders group "Team Triumph." The top five fundraisers in this group have each won a prize package from the DGR & Triumph clothing collection.
Riding the new Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X in London as part of Team Triumph were 007 stunt riders Paul Edmondson and Martin Craven, as well as Kieran Clarke, stunt rider for the Mission Impossible franchise, while actor James Phelps, best known for playing Fred Weasley in Harry Potter, rode the Bonneville T120 Stealth Edition in Poole, UK.
Stars and celebrities turned out and rode in force - from Thailand to Toronto, Madrid to Munich - which saw more than 600 riders ride out from the Triumph dealership in Munich, Germany's largest ride.

 


Hedon Helmets, ELF Lubricants and Quad Lock also supported the classic inspired charity event, further rewarding the efforts of the year's fundraisers.
The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride unites classic and vintage style motorcycle riders all over the world to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men's mental health.
The DGR was founded in Sydney, Australia, in 2012 by Mark Hawwa. He'd seen a photograph featuring classic suits and vintage motorcycles - which inspired the idea that a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of motorcyclists and connect the global motorcycling community and to raise funds for a cause important to every rider.
The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride has raised over $45m for prostate cancer research and men's health since 2012.

New Ultra Durable 'HeRidium' Brake Pad Backing Plate Technology


Leading Danish brake system component manufacturer SBS Friction is introducing an innovative new backing plate technology for its top-level racing compound, DS Dual Sinter.
Called 'HeRidium,' the new technology is designed to match the extreme racing conditions and requirements for backing plate stability in World Superbike, and especially in 24 Hours World Endurance stock class categories.


To improve backing plate strength and stability, and significantly reduce the risk of deformation (bending) and compound taper wear, 'HeRidium' backing plate technology is composed of high-tech steel with a specialized heat treatment.
"Over the past 25 years, motorcycles used for racing have developed a lot," says Allan Østli, Race Manager at SBS. "More powerful engines, new tire compounds, suspension components, and a lot of technological integrations are just some of the developments and advances that have taken place, with more demands being placed on brake pad backing plates all the time.


"All of this affects the amount of pressure put on the brakes as lap times get faster and faster, especially in extreme and high-performance races. With this innovative new 'HeRidium' backing plate technology, we can meet those demands.
