H-D go ST for 117 Inches of Performance and Touring

Released at 10 am CST on Wednesday January 26, 2022, Harley has confirmed eight new models (so far) for 2022, with more to come including an addition to the Sportster S line-up. There will be full information in the upcoming March edition of AMD, but here are the four primary highlights - the two ST 117 inch Touring models, upgraded Low Rider S and all new Low Rider ST.
Here's the press release in full …

MILWAUKEE, WI (January 26, 2022) – Harley-Davidson adds performance and factory-custom style to its 2022 motorcycle line with the reveal of eight new models, each powered by the Milwaukee-Eight 117, the most-powerful factory-installed engine offered by Harley-Davidson. AIMExpo

AIMExpo - "We Did It"
Las Vegas, January 19 - 21, 2022

While hard facts such as numbers are thin on the ground, it would appear that this year's AIMExpo at Las Vegas might well have marked the point at which the "reimagined" format of a traditional two/three-day trade only dealer expo has made a comeback.
A point at which the AIMExpo brand has found its place in the industry calendar and a point at which the market decided to get back to basics with a post-pandemic desire to do things the 'old way' and meet vendors in person.

In a country as large as the United States, some 800 or so dealerships (with an average of two people per store apparently) is not a huge result for two days of endeavor - not in historic terms (our source was citing organizer numbers for the Wednesday and Thursday), but in the context of recent years, it is encouraging.
At the time of writing (five days after the show closed), AIMExpo appears to have declined to issue any kind of formal news release or 'show wrap', however, third party reports received from vendors have been mostly complimentary; even including calls for the other major distributors to follow the lead set by Tucker Powersports on the basis that adding its heft to the momentum established in Las Vegas this month may set a positive trend in motion.
AIMExpo has announced February 15-17, 2023, at Las Vegas, as its next date - a return to the traditional mid-February Dealer Expo slot - and while there is no firm news yet, it would be a surprise if the success that Tucker appears to have had this year doesn't encourage it to continue with the joint venture for a while yet at least, before returning to staging its own dealer event or events - if indeed it ever does.

While shows can't protect specialty markets from the effects of recessions and wider issues, if successful, their critical mass can help specialty markets to transition in times of dramatic strategic change.
AIMExpo is to be congratulated on learning the lessons from its early years, and from the final years of the former trade shows that shaped our market, by investing in fewer but higher quality "dealer education" initiatives that had wider relevance - especially with regard to digital marketing and electrification in the powersports market.

AIMExpo was seeking to establish its brand as an author of "disruptive thinking" and through the direct relevance of its seminar program and garnering a better dealer attendance than has been seen at an independent industry show for some years, they may well have done just that.

While there is no data available yet as to how many of the attending dealerships were there expressly because they were Tucker account holders, it is quite likely that at least half were and, for its part, Tucker appears to have made the most of the opportunity with a slew of dealer service and brand development initiatives and a stack of new product introductions across the wide range of markets it now serves.
There will be more AIMExpo reportage and commentary, including some wide ranging brand and product news from Tucker in the upcoming March edition of AMD Magazine.

PG&A and International reported strong sales increasing +24% and +34% for the full year 2021 respectively. Market share improved during the year for ORV and Boats in North America; Internationally, market share improved for all powersports segments in 2021.
The company says that the year saw it "expand and strengthen the ORV, Snow, Motorcycle and Boats product portfolios with over 30 new vehicles and nearly 500 new accessories in 2021."
Q4 Motorcycles segment sales, including PG&A, totaled $150m, up 2% compared to Q4, 2020. Gross segment profit for Q4 2021 was $3m, or 1.7% of sales, compared to $1m, or 0.8% of sales, in the fourth quarter of 2020.

"The increase in gross profit margin was driven by favorable product mix and lower promotions costs, offsetting higher input costs, driven by supply chain constraints."
North American consumer retail sales for Indian Motorcycles decreased low-double digits percent during Q4 2021 - in a mid-to-heavyweight two-wheel motorcycle industry that was up mid-single digits percent. North American consumer retail sales for Polaris' motorcycle segment, including both Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot, increased low-single digits percent during Q4 2021.
North American consumer retail sales for the motorcycle industry, including both two-wheel and three-wheel, increased low-single digits percent during Q4 2021. Indian market share loss was driven by a lack of product availability during the quarter driven by supply chain challenges.
CEO Mike Speetzen is quoted as stating: "Marking a strong finish to the year, we delivered record sales and earnings in 2021, propelled by the Polaris team's dedication and tenacity as they capitalized on opportunities while navigating the macroeconomic-related headwinds."
Polaris confirmed that it has added manufacturing capacity for mid-capacity Indian Motorcycle models in Vietnam.
"Innovation remained the cornerstone of our culture, supported by the introduction of several new category-defining vehicles this year. With interest in powersports continuing to grow and new customers increasingly entering our industry, we expect 2022 to be another record year for Polaris.
"Leveraging the company's strengths and scale as the global leader in powersports, our refreshed strategy and new strategic objectives will guide our path forward to create greater competitive advantage, welcome new customers and grow the market, drive profitable growth and deliver value for all our stakeholders."
The company divested the Scott Wine era GEM and Taylor-Dunn business acquisitions during the quarter.

Polaris also stated that materials and broader supply chain shortages remain a challenge and likely will do through most, if not all, of the year ahead, but that it still expects to be able to post another record year in 2022.
The company issued full year 2022 sales and adjusted earnings guidance with full year adjusted net income in the range of $10.10 to $10.40 per diluted share and full year sales up in the range of 12% to 15%. Corbin Saddles

Dual Touring Saddle for 2022 Indian Chief

Always one of the first to market with model applications and fitments, Corbin Saddles has struck again with this new Dual Touring saddle for the 2022 Indian Chief.
The design maximizes the seating area and positions the rider bucket in the "sweet spot" to offer the best possible ergonomics and long-range comfort. "Sculpted seating platforms conform to the shape of your body to give more square inches of even support and eliminate hot spots and pressure on your tailbone.

"Neutralized seating platforms help to hold your body in place and curb sliding in the saddle. This also helps to relieve rider fatigue by taking pressure off the wrists and knees. Our exclusive Comfort Cell foam material on the inside provides a firm, resilient ride that supports the body indefinitely. Over time, Comfort Cell will break in and adapt to provide a personalized fit."
Backrests are available in several styles to suit rider tastes. Corbin says that it has found its #BR Ovalbac provides the right blend of clean visuals and rider support with an additional nine inches of vertical support.

"Covered with genuine leather to match the saddle and built up with Comfort Cell foam for long lasting comfort. At the rear we offer a variety of finishing plate options. By default, we provide a standard leather-look model or can provide a carbon fiber-look model at no extra charge (just be sure to specify). We also offer backing plates paintable or even pre-painted gloss black for just a little extra."
Corbin's Dual Tour has the option of electric seat heaters in the rider and passenger platforms that are controlled independently via conveniently located switches in the left side panels. All components of the heater system come pre-installed, and they include a wiring pigtail to integrate to the bike's 12V system.
Corbin's Dual Touring saddle is designed to work with the Indian accessory sissy bar or a Corbin backrest in the rear. If you opt for the sissy bar, the company offers a coordinated passenger pad that emulates the shape of the #BR rider backrest.

Magnum Shielding

Magnum Quick Connect Upper Replacement Clutch Cable Options and Handlebar Install Kits

Those wanting to change the handlebars on late model Touring and Softail models are presented with a disproportionate challenge - they have a removable upper section on the OE clutch cable, but currently the only way to upgrade that style, or choose from a wider selection of lengths, is by using a traditional full replacement clutch cable. This requires draining the transmission fluid, removing the transmission side cover, and possibly removing the exhaust system.
Brake line and control cable specialist Magnum Shielding offers dealers alternative length and finish choices with its all-new Quick Connect upper replacement clutch cables. These upper clutch cables replace the OE upper cable section on 2018+ Softail and 2021+ Touring models with a replacement stock or alternative length cable, providing an easy-to-install quick connection to the existing lower cable. Quick Connect cables are also available as part of Magnum’s handlebar installation kits.

KARBONFIBR Quick Connect clutch cable

Designed to reuse the plastic adjuster cover and connector body components of the OE cable - to reduce replacement costs - Magnum also made improvements to the adjuster assembly and has incorporated a sturdy and easy to adjust threaded metal cable adjuster to replace the prone-to-breaking OE plastic button or clip.
With the included tool and instructions, Quick Connect cables take no more time to install than the OE replacement version and bypasses the need to drain the transmission fluid.
Its large selection of Quick Connect cables includes a bent tube fitting for Touring bikes with batwing fairings - providing those models with a precise and compatible OE fitment.
Adjustment is the same as for any mechanical cable - adjust the clutch behind the derby cover per factory manual instructions, tighten the cable adjuster until the slack is the correct amount at the clutch lever, and then tighten the locknut and you’re done! The OE cover slides over the Quick Connect adjuster assembly and the provided rubber boot keeps everything clean and dry from the elements.
Magnum's Premium Designer Series Quick Connect cables feature what it claims is the industry’s highest quality braid in four Signature color choices - STERLING CHROMITE, BLACK PEARL, POLISHED STAINLESS and the new KARBONFIBR - with complementing chrome or black chrome plated fittings.
KARBONFIBR braid is created from metallic wire with distinct and varied black tones, blended and interwoven to mimic the unique, high-tech look of carbon fiber. All Magnum Signature control cables and brake lines share matching braid color and weave.

STERLING CHROMITE 2021 Touring Quick Connect handlebar installation kit

Made with anti-friction inner liners, nylon adjuster inserts and high-efficiency coated inner cables, Magnum Quick Connect cables are factory-lubricated for smooth, consistent, long lasting operation and have a non-yellowing, crystal-clear outer jacket for protecting the braid.
Magnum's economical XR Series Quick Connect clutch cables come with stainless steel braid and chrome fittings or OE style black vinyl construction with chrome or black chrome plated fittings. Both styles incorporate the same performance features as the Designer Series Signature cables. As with all Magnum’s cables and brake lines, XR clutch cables "offer excellent quality and a great fit."
"Our Quick Connect handlebar installation kits include everything for a handlebar replacement - DOT brake lines, Quick Connect clutch cable and hardware, plug & play throttle-by-wire and turn signal and switch wiring extensions. Magnum works hard at making it easy to install a handlebar.
"The DOT brake lines included in the kits have an OE factory-style construction with high quality fittings, tube assemblies and manifolds crucial for a trouble-free installation that provides professional looking results.
"Our premium brake lines feature PTFE tubing braided with DuPont Kevlar aramid fiber reinforcement, Signature Magnum braid and a crystal-clear PVC outer jacket that never discolors. Aramid fiber reinforcement offers the ultimate in high-performance braking by greatly reducing brake hose expansion that robs braking power.
"XR stainless DOT brake line assemblies, assembled in-house at Magnum’s manufacturing facility, are made using an enhanced construction of heavy gauge stainless steel embedded in a tough, abrasion-resistant nylon outer jacket for superior durability, braking power and safe riding. XR brake lines, like all of Magnum’s brake line assemblies, are fully DOT FMVSS-106 compliant.
"No matter whether you’re looking for an upper replacement clutch cable or an entire handlebar installation kit, our new Quick Connect clutch cables will save time and money and deliver outstanding quality, DOT compliance and ease of installation."

JIMS

JIMS Product Additions

Piston Jet Test Stand
Stock piston jets sometimes fail. Fact. Sumping oil on Twin Cam and M-8 engines, noisy tappets at start-up, excessive top end heat - all of these conditions can easily be diagnosed incorrectly, which can lead to wasted time, money and effort or, worse yet, an expensive engine failure.
The check valve inside can be open at idle, adding too much oil to the crankcase, resulting in a sumping condition. Or, worse yet, the top end of the engine can be oil starved causing heat and premature damage or engine failure. JIMS has now updated its piston jet test stand to include BOTH applications - Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam.

"Before you spend time, money and effort chasing a problem in the wrong direction, be sure that the piston jets are functioning properly. For more quick and concise information on piston jet failure rates and how this test stand works, check out our Baxters Garage 'JIMS Piston Jet Test Stand' video on YouTube."

Magnetic Tappet Holder
Changing or upgrading cams, cam support plate and the oil pump is one of the most common tasks done on Harley-Davidson engines. This new and simple low-cost tool will easily hold the tappets in the tappet bores when the cam is removed.
Simply install the tool over the tappet cover and the rare earth magnets will magnetically hold the tappet in place while performing any cam chest work - a time saver for any technician. This tool is designed to work on both Twin Cam and Milwaukee-Eight engines. Included with the tool is a form fitted tray that will protect the magnets from damage when stored in the technician’s toolbox.

HP Corse

Style and Performance for FTR and Pan America

One of the most beautiful exhausts of recent years, the Hydroform-Short for Indian's FTR 1200 is designed and manufactured using hydroforming technology by noted Bologna, Italy based race and street performance exhaust specialist HP Corse.

Hydroform Short for FTR 1200: available with or without dB killer. The craftsman-built 1 into 2 slip-on replaces the stock catalyst and has 25 hand TIG-welded pieces.

The HP Corse 1 into 2 slip-on is a hand TIG-welded masterpiece with a beautiful partial carbon cover, emphasizing the sinuous curves that HP Corse is able to achieve by using advanced hydroforming, "guiding the eye towards the two beautiful overlapping Hydroform-Short mufflers.
"The HP Corse de-cat is a work of art made up of 25 pieces, welded together by hand. Its function is to replace the stock catalyst for an even more powerful engine with irrepressible torque. We can say with great satisfaction that the HP Corse exhaust system completely changes the rear part end of the FTR - making it absolutely aggressive and even more iconic for an absolutely unique, stylistic lay-out."

Seen here in ceramic coated black steel, the stylish octagonal silencer body of the 'SPS Carbon' for the Pan America integrates perfectly with the retained stock heat-protection cover; features include watertight stainless steel rivets - essential on ADV exhaust designs.

The homologated version has the dB killer and keeps the original catalyst, with replacement fittings between the catalyst and the double exhaust made in steel. The racing version eliminates the catalyst "for an even greater power gain." The company says a black ceramic version will be available soon.

For the 1250 cc Pan America, HP Corse has a model-specific version of its Euro 5 compliant double outlet, dB killer equipped 'SPS Carbon' slip-on with highly sound-absorbent packing. Lighter than stock, it weighs just 3.4 kg (7.5 lbs) - seen here in Satin Titanium.

Also seen here is the 'SPS Carbon' slip-on we first featured in AMD at the end of 2021 with "guaranteed increased durability and performance compared to the stock muffler that Harley is using, with improved hp and torque - especially at the low and mid-range revs."

Comment by Editor-in-Chief, Robin Bradley

Cometh the 'SPAC', Cometh the Dodgy Forecast

The news that Harley will 'float' LiveWire as an entirely separate legal entity has taken many, including me, entirely by surprise. The solution that has been arrived at and the distance traveled to deliver it so quickly is stunning, frankly.
Once you drill down and follow the logic of the structure to be used it has good sense written into its DNA. Leaving aside the sometimes derided nature of the 'SPAC' (Special Purpose Acquisition Company) as a way-to-market vehicle, it is going down an equity-share joint venture route that gets my attention.
At long last, we have a Harley management team that is fit for purpose in a 21st century in which all the orthodox 'Not Made Here' tropes are being jettisoned.
As with its partnership with Qianjiang Motorcycle Company, Harley is drinking from a well of JV thinking that is commonplace at a time when it needs to be commonplace. At times of great commercial and manufacturing change, Harley is pushing forward-facing buttons in spades.
As solutions go, the way Harley's management has chosen to embrace collaboration is uncharacteristic and bold in equal measure. Compliments to the chefs, I say!
The partners they are signed up with - in investor and private equity terms - appear to be 'robust'. I didn't know anything about either AEA Investors or Bridges Fund Management before, and from the limited amount of research I was able to do in the available time, they both appear to be 'righteous'.

100,000 units in five years

I do know more about KYMCO though. Of the Asian majors, they are a business to be admired. The company's Chairman Allen Ko is an entrepreneur who is respected and revered. When it comes to the powersports industry's 'Electrification Space' there are not many corporations with twice the 10-year longevity at it than Harley itself has, and technologies like its IONEX swappable battery program is one of the breakthroughs in a market in which GOGORO is currently the pacemaker.
While the concept of swappable batteries does not specifically rear its head in Harley's S2, S3 or S4 Arrow platform architecture development plans, it would be a surprise if LiveWire didn't at least embrace it at the low power end of the electric PTW market, initially and especially in Asia. Indeed, proto-rivals such as Honda, Yamaha, Piaggio and KTM are taking it very seriously, and targeting the products their consortium builds for use in shared platform technology in Europe. For my money, if Stefan Pierer (KTM) and Michele Colaninno (Piaggio) are taking it seriously (to say nothing of Honda and Yamaha), then so should everybody else.
Modular architecture is very much the way of the future in the EV market, especially in the powersports market, and with its Arrow platform, Harley is giving LiveWire a ticket to the Ball, and KYMCO will be the perfect dance partner.
However, there is just one small fly in the ointment as I have understood the plans so far. The consensus in Europe, indeed globally, is that it will take mandatory compulsion to end the production of internal combustion engine vehicles. Only then will we see critical mass for electrification.
The prospect of the international motorcycle industry seeing substantial adoption of electrification in the short-term (five to ten years) remains debatable. The LiveWire investor presentation uses
growth projections that appear optimistic at best.
From sales of 387 LiveWire units and income of $33m in 2021, Harley is projecting that LiveWire will sell 100,961 units worth $1.769bn as soon as 2026 - just five years from now. This is then slated to double to approx. 190,000 units by 2030 (worth around $3bn in total revenue).
These forecasts are "management projections", not industry forecasts, and it is unlikely that the world's motorcycle industry trade associations (including the MIC in USA and ACEM in Europe) would recognize such a forecast from their own and their members' research efforts, or be comfortable associating themselves with such forecasts.
Harley is betting the farm on being able to "grow the market by expanding the product portfolio" - a 'build the bikes and the consumers will come' piece of wishful strategic thinking that we have seen from Harley before.
Harley is gambling that "younger" and "new-to-sport riders" will tip the balance in their favor. In fact, all the research that AMD sister magazine International Dealer News is seeing in Europe, from Asia and even from the United Nations, in terms of urbanization trends, suggests that the real opportunity is with suburban and peri-urban commuters.
A market which largely (though not exclusively) requires longer-term settled residence and developed career status than that which characterizes "younger" riders (who tend to nest closer to downtown) and the ability to spend at better than entry level price-points.
I'm afraid to have to say that the market research evidence cited in Harley's investor prospectus is thin, and that without an ICE endgame target date translating consumer environmental sentiment into units sold is dangerous. That is the plan's Achilles Heel right there.

Harley-Davidson

Harley Confirms 2022 Carry-Over Models in Advance of All-New Models World Premiere Event

In advance of a new models global unveil two weeks after this edition of AMD Magazine went to press, Harley quietly slipped out a low-key announcement confirming largely cosmetic changes to the carry-forward product line for 2022.

Already arriving in authorized dealers in the United States, and due to start getting into international showrooms through February, Harley stated that "the limited-production 2022 models from Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations (CVO) and more new Harley-Davidson motorcycle models will be revealed during the “Further. Faster.” World Premiere Event on January 26 at 10:00 a.m. CST."
This Stage I announcement is dominated by new paint options throughout the range and upgraded wheels on selected models.
Plans to offer new Touring and Softail engine combinations with the previously CVO only 117-incher being propagated deeper into the range (ST models), and the 107-inch M-8 largely disappearing, appear either to have been shelved or, at the time of writing, are being held back for the Stage II new model unveil.
Where offered, the 883 Iron and Forty-Eight get another year in production.

Sport Category
The Sportster S model "performance cruiser" retains the 121 hp launch platform Revolution Max 1250T engine and is offered in two new additional colors - "White Sand Pearl" and "Mineral Green Metallic."

Sportster S

It is thought likely that the new model announcements will see a second Sportster S added, also on the 975 cc platform, with the name "Nightster" having been widely touted in recent months.

Adventure Touring Category
"Since launching in February 2021, the Pan America 1250 Special and Pan America 1250 adventure touring motorcycles have taken the ADV world by storm. In fact, the Pan America 1250 Special has become the #1 selling adventure touring motorcycle in North America and was named Best Adventure Bike and Motorcycle of the Year by Motorcycle.com."
With higher production numbers and wider availability expected for 2022, it is very much a "steady as she goes" message from Milwaukee on this first foray into territory where Harley is going head-to-head with serious competition.

Pan America 1250 Special

Harley has made a good start with its ADV sector offer, so both models are retained for 2022, with an improved TFT screen (one of the few criticisms of the launch iterations so far), extended Vehicle Hill Hold Control active time from 10 seconds to 3 to 5 minutes under normal conditions and a new "Fastback Blue/White Sand" color option for the Pan America 1250 Special (only).

Cruiser Category
There are new paint options across the range, with model-specific changes kept to the minimum.
Softail Standard: new for 2022, Annihilator cast aluminum wheels with silver finish replace laced wheels.

Paul Devine

Paul Devine Leaves S&S Cycle

After seven and a half years, industry veteran and former Harley-Davidson stand-out Paul Devine has decided to leave S&S Cycle in search of "challenges new".
During his time at the Viola, Wisconsin home of "Proven Performance" Paul held various leadership positions in sales and marketing, including business development roles, key accounts, and OEM customer responsibilities in the United States and internationally. Most recently, Paul served as the Interim President after Paul Langley stepped down in 2021.

"I have enjoyed my time with S&S Cycle and am grateful for the many opportunities my roles have provided. It has been a privilege to represent an exemplary brand on a global stage. I am proud of the work that was accomplished during my tenure and confident my efforts have positively contributed to the future success of S&S Cycle."
During his time at S&S, Paul helped achieve the company's strategic plan and goals that will propel the business for years to come. He led initiatives that included a successful entry into the hugely competitive motorcycle and UTV aftermarket exhaust industry, updating of its authorized dealer policies, implementing 'forward facing' programs including international product approvals and procedures, and helping S&S to engage with Original Equipment Manufacturers and become a considerable player in racing (not least in the AFT series with its support for the Indian Motorcycle 'Wrecking Crew' team) while still maintaining its market leadership in the custom performance parts aftermarket.

AFT

AFT 2022 Mission Production Twins Challenge, Unified Premier Class in 2023

In announcing the technical rules for the 2022 season, AFT has confirmed the debut of a Mission Production Twins Challenge - laying the groundwork for merging the Mission SuperTwins and AFT Production Twins classes in 2023.
"To successfully combine the two existing twin-cylinder classes into a dynamic premier class in 2023, Progressive AFT has implemented a set of technical adjustments in Mission SuperTwins and AFT Production Twins for 2022 that will align the performance envelopes of production-based and race-only machines.

"While the technical changes serve as the first step to a single twin-cylinder championship, the Mission Production Twins Challenge will act as a bridge between the classes in 2022.
"Following the AFT Production Twins Main at each event, the top four finishers will be granted provisional starting positions for the Mission SuperTwins Main Event on a dedicated Mission Production Twins Challenge row.
"The inclusion of the top AFT Production Twins entries in the premier-class Main will allow for repeated head-to-head comparisons between the Mission SuperTwins contenders and the most competitive AFT Production Twins machines, providing critical data to guide the future evolution of the technical rules."
Along with acting as an ongoing evaluation program, the Mission Production Twins Challenge will aid in the development efforts of AFT Production Twins teams by providing an opportunity to earn over $100,000 throughout the season. The top Mission Production Twins Challenge riders at each round will be eligible to earn $72,000 in potential Mission SuperTwins purse payouts plus $28,800 in race bonus awards from Mission Foods.
In addition, the top three riders in the Mission Production Twins Challenge point standings at the conclusion of the season will also be eligible for a $26,000 year-end points fund from Mission Foods. To qualify for the year-end bonus, Mission Production Twins Challenge riders must compete in every Mission SuperTwins Main Event for which they are eligible.
"We are committed to providing a level playing field for manufacturers and teams to compete at the sport’s highest level," said Gene Crouch, COO of Progressive American Flat Track. "Mission Foods shares that vision, and we truly appreciate the support they’ve pledged as we work towards a unified Mission SuperTwins class in 2023."

Drag Specialties

What Was Once Old is Now New Again
Builder & Painter: Mark Shadley, Shadley Bros. Motorcycles

The 2022-23 Drag Specialties OldBook features a 1967 Harley-Davidson FL customized by Mark Shadley of Whitman, Ma. based Shadley Bros. Motorcycles as its cover bike.
The Shadleys are lifelong enthusiasts and fulltime custom bike builders and well-known for their many high quality, strong running custom bike builds.
"I had this bike on hand when the conversation started with Drag Specialties about a cover bike build," Shadley said. "The bike is a generator-model Shovelhead motor, these were only available in a four-year period: 1966 through 1969, so it is a somewhat rare bike to start with, so it was a very good candidate for the build."

"The stock displacement was 74" - this one has been punched out to 93" to give it a little more wind," said Shadley. It is modified with S&S Super Stock cylinder heads and an S&S flywheel to give it the added cubic inches and power output.
The transmission gears are a close-ratio four-speed set from Andrews. "I got the transmission kit right out of the Drag Specialties catalog," Shadley said. A stronger clutch setup and transmission sprockets also went into the improved, rebuilt drivetrain.
Shadley added an electronic ignition system and a later-model style starter. He also upgraded the charging system, the wiring and used LED lights for the signals and brake lights.
"When you build a bike for Drag Specialties, you focus on what is available in the catalog," Shadley said. "Why not? There is so much in there! The idea is to make the build accessible, not stray too far. I wanted to add some modern touches, but still keep the build looking correct for the time period."
The rear end features a "juice brake" setup. "It is a drum brake, but it is hydraulic powered," Shadley said. "And it is all on the left side. The front rotor is also on the left side, so when you park the bike on the side stand, you get a really clean, uncluttered look."
Being a builder, he did customize or modify some parts to fit his ideas. "The exhaust system I built," Shadley said. "I started with a Paughco exhaust pipe and modified it to be a 'crush pipe' (a system that has a header run inside the frame) and added a bit of a kickup at the end. I did some work to shape the oil tank - extensions and length to the sides." He also made the center tank panel that runs the length of the tank and houses the gauges. The chain guard brackets and ignition coil cover also got some custom touches.
"I am really, really happy with the look of that front end," Shadley said. "I really wanted that cleaned up, to get away from the style of a bike that has that heavy front headlight nacelle cover with the fork tins, a different set of triple trees and a custom headlight to clean up and give the front end a more open, narrower appearance.
"I also changed the angle of the brake pedal a bit, so it sat with a better line. And I made modifications so I could install a set of later-model floorboards on the bike and get a more interesting look and style," he said.
The paint scheme was inspired by the Drag Specialties blue. "I chose colors that would complement that blue, the classic Drag Specialties color," Shadley said. "The silver is real silver leaf inlay to give it some added pop. And the logo on the tank was inspired by the Drag Specialties logo I saw on an old original business card."
The best part? "I get to keep it, it's mine!" Shadley laughed. "I built it like all my custom bikes - to be a bike you can ride. Once it is returned from being shown by Drag Specialties, I look forward to being able to put some miles on it."

Ducati

Ducati Tests 'V21L' MotoE Prototype Race Bike

As if any proof were needed that the decision for Ducati to replace Energica as the 'Spec-Bike' provider of choice for the Ducati MotoE bike that takes to the track for the FIM Enel MotoE WorldCup from 2023 had been 'in-play' long before the October 2021 announcement, Ducati press released news that the prototype was already being tested on the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli track before the year was out.
Code-named 'V21L', the electric motorcycle prototype is the result of the joint work of the Ducati Corse team and the Ducati R&D engineers, led by Roberto Canè, Ducati eMobility Director. "It was taken out on track by Michele Pirro, professional rider and Ducati test rider since 2013, who evaluated the technical characteristics and potential of Ducati’s first electric motorcycle."

Roberto Canè is quoted as saying: "We are experiencing a truly extraordinary moment. I find it hard to believe it is reality and still not a dream! The first electric Ducati on the track is exceptional not only for its uniqueness but also for the type of undertaking: challenging both for its performance objectives and for its extremely short timescales, and we are certainly not finished yet, but in the meantime, we have laid an important first 'brick'."
Pirro stated: "Testing the MotoE prototype on the circuit was a great thrill, because it marks the beginning of an important chapter in Ducati history. The bike is light and already has a good balance, and the throttle connection in the first opening phase and the ergonomics are very similar to those of a MotoGP bike.
"If it weren't for the silence and for the fact that in this test, we decided to limit the power output to just 70% of performance, I could easily have imagined that I was riding my bike."
Canè went on to say that "the most important challenges in the development of an electric racing motorcycle remain related to the size, weight and range of the batteries. Ducati's goal is to make electric motorcycles that are characterized by their lightness and high-performance available to all FIM Enel MotoE World Cup participants.
"Additionally, the focus of the project is on the consistency of power delivery during the race and the development of a cooling system that is suitable for the objective. Our experience in the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup will be a fundamental support for product R&D.
"As soon as the technology allows it, the goal is to create a Ducati electric vehicle for road use that is sporty, light, exciting and able to satisfy all enthusiasts."

Getting Connected - "Bringing Order to Chaos"

In the business of charging or drawing power from the battery, making the right, secure and safe 'connection' is important. However, with so many different connectors in use in powersports, it's not as straightforward as it needs to be …
TecMate saw this problem coming and down the years has planned its platform connectivity carefully and developed a range of premium cables and adapters that can connect most of the different connection systems together - "bringing order to the chaos."

O-01 premium quick-connect permanent battery lead for powersport batteries, with weather protected connection system and cable.

Says Martin Human, CEO/CTO of TecMate: "We can't prescribe to OEMs what connector they should use - they all have their own and generally differing reasons for the choices they make. So, our job is to make life easier for dealers and riders by making adapters that cover most of the options and requirements needed so riders can hook up to the vehicle's battery, be it to charge or draw power".
OptiMate battery chargers utilize the industry standard 2-pin SAE connection system - "and we have made sure that the OptiMate SAE connector fits all other SAE 2-pin connectors."
OptiMate's 'O' SAE is a little better than standard, it's designed to accept in-line or end cap seals that protect the SAE connection against ingress of dirt and water.
O-19 Ø12 mm DIN power socket adapter.

"Often overlooked and misunderstood, cable temperature rating is important too," says Martin. "OptiMate is now standardizing on SPT-2W - the 'W' signifying a -40°C/°F rating and the SPT-2 signifying thicker insulation of 1.1 mm (0.045").
"OptiMate's waterproof fused battery leads are a popular choice for OEMs and dealers alike. Fitment of a good battery lead makes it easy for the rider to connect a battery charger when storing their vehicle. Ring sizes from M6 (1/4") to the innovative dual ring (M6-M8/1/4" - 5/16") system allow for connection to any powersport battery, including larger batteries used on Side-by-Sides, with bulk quantities 4, 20 or 120 available."
O-20 SAE front mount panel connector.

OptiMate offers a range of SAE-to-SAE extenders from 180 cm (6 ft) up to 460 cm (15 ft), with an even longer 762 cm (25 ft) extender coming during 2022.
OptiMate's range of SAE-to-SAE panel mount sockets include the unique front mount O-20 socket with rubber expander system, designed for when it is difficult to reach behind and tighten that nut. Mounting and connecting is from the front - simply drill the 25 mm (1") hole, make the connection, push the socket into the hole and then tighten the nut on the front and the rubber expander jams it in position. The conventional O-40 socket line fits an 18 mm (0.7") hole.  Short (15 cm/6") and long versions (100 cm/40") are available for both.
O-30 tankbag connector.

Rounding out the panel mount options is the O-30 tank or pannier bag 12V power-pass through, a low profile panel mount system that fits the cross hair entry on most tank bags.
"The ISO/DIN 4165 Ø12 mm connector - used extensively on BMW, Ducati and Triumph motorcycles - creates a vibration resistant connection ideal for motorcycle and even marine use. OptiMate's red BIKE 'DIN' connectors are a perfect fit with two fully encapsulated plug styles on offer - in-line (with cable exiting at 180°) and low profile with cable exiting at 90°." The O-09, O-19 and O-29 adapts from 'DIN' to SAE, whereas the O-39 adapter adapts from 'DIN' to DC2.5."
The DC2.5 connector is an axial 5.5 x 2.5 mm DC socket and plug system "used by many heated gear and apparel companies, with a few also using the smaller 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm system. OptiMate's DC2.5 and DC2.1 adapters include the 100 cm O-21 battery lead made with 1.32 mm2 (16AWG) cable designed to pass up to 13 amp of current.
"The most common 12V outlet used in the powersports industry is the 21-22 mm diameter 'AUTO' J563/SAE563 connector," says Martin.
O-39 adapter for heated apparel.

"OptiMate offers fused SAE to AUTO adapters, the O-02 that can also adapt to DIN/Ø12 mm socket, and a standard O-12 adapter." Coming during 2022 is the O-22 plug with an adjustable perimeter expander system that will keep the plug firmly in the socket during 'hard' hi-vibration riding.
"And then there are the diagnostic connectors - found on different motorcycles - that also have a 12V power feed from the battery.
"OptiMate offers a fused O-47 adapter for Ducati motorcycles and the O-57 for MV Agusta, as well as the latest Euro 5 connector that is meant to reduce the number of different diagnostic connectors on European motorcycles to one - OptiMate's O-77 - that has been tested and approved by Ducati."

O-77 Euro 5 adapter.

Martin says there are yet more adapters due for release by OptiMate during 2022, and that this reflects on the complexities caused by the way that power use on motorcycles is evolving.
These will include the high current EC5 range, utilizing the same connector as used by the majority of lithium jump starters, a magnetic connection system that utilizes the Magcode connector that is popular in motorsport, and a line of 'DIN' sockets delivered with handle and panel-mount hardware.
