OptiMate Joins 2020 AMD World Championship 'Product Partner' Program
Last month AMD announced a new class of vendor sponsorship opportunity for the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building for 2020 and beyond - the 'Product Partner' Program - with the participation of German lights specialist Kellermann GmbH.
Available exclusively to regular AMD Magazine advertisers, the 'Product Partner' program is an opportunity for class-leading vendors to associate themselves with the aims, aspirations and ambitions of the AMD World Championship and to support the World Championship builder community with products from their range.
This month we are pleased to announce that TecMate, designer and manufacturer of the class-leading OptiMate line of battery chargers, maintenance and diagnostic products, is to offer the 'Class of 2020' a performance enhancing OptiMate Lithium for 12.8 / 13.2V LiFePO4 batteries or an OptiMate for 12V AGM batteries.
The changes that are taking place to battery platform use, as more OEMs migrate towards the use of Lithium Ion technology, and the demands being made on motorcycle batteries with the explosion in device charging and power draw are creating a whole new landscape and range of pitfalls for riders, battery condition has become a key priority for dealers, customizers and riders alike.
TecMate CEO/CTO Martin Human says that: "These days the demands being made on powersports batteries and the 'critical system' role they have in keeping security products, communications, mobile devices and accessories working well, without compromising starting and the power the motorcycle's management systems require, has become a more complex world as a bewildering array of battery platforms have emerged to answer those needs.
"Our OptiMate range is specifically engineered to provide dealers and riders with the solutions they need, and as a showcase of advanced design, engineering and innovation, we are very happy to associate the OptiMate brand with the AMD World Championship."
All 2020 AMD World Championship competitors will be contacted with the offer to choose from a selected range of OptiMate product, for free. The program is aimed at products that complement the design options that the builder is already seeking to realize.

Polaris
Polaris 2019 1Q Results With Sales +15%
Polaris has reported and adjusted sales for the first quarter of 2019 increased by +15% to $1,496 million, with net income at $0.78 per diluted share, down -8% over the prior year; adjusted net income for the same period was $1.08 per diluted share, down -4% over the prior year, but ahead of company expectations.
Overall North American retail sales decreased -3% for the quarter compared to last year; ORV N.A. retail sales were down mid-single digits percent and motorcycle sales were down high-single digits percent, both negatively impacted by weather.
The company gained market share in snowmobiles for the season ending March 2019 and maintained market share in Indian motorcycles "in a challenging industry environment."
Motorcycles segment sales, including PG&A, totaled $118 million, down -10% compared to the first quarter of 2018, driven largely by declines in Slingshot sales, and, to less of an extent, Indian Motorcycle sales, partly due to an ongoing challenging motorcycle market. Gross profit for the first quarter of 2019 was down at $7 million compared to $17 million in the first quarter of 2018. The decrease in gross profit was primarily the result of lower volume and tariff costs.
North American consumer retail sales for the Polaris motorcycle segment, including both Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot, decreased high-single digits percent during the first quarter of 2019. Indian Motorcycle retail sales decreased mid-single digits percent. Slingshot's retail sales were down low-double digits percent during the quarter. Motorcycle industry retail sales, 900 cc and above, were down mid-single digits percent in the first quarter of 2019.
Polaris increased its full year 2019 earnings guidance and now expects earnings to be between $6.05 to $6.30 per diluted share, which includes the absorption of $80 to $90 million of additional tariff costs anticipated in 2019 over 2018. Full year 2019 adjusted sales growth guidance remains unchanged at up 11% to 13% over the prior year. Dealer inventory was down 1% year-over-year for the first quarter 2019, in line with expectations.
Scott Wine, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Industries Inc., is quoted as saying: "Polaris’ 65th anniversary year is off to a solid start, as we delivered sound results and finished the quarter with strong momentum. The team executed well, providing quality products to our customers while navigating a dynamic trade environment. Retail sales results were somewhat mixed, with greater than 20 percent snowmobile growth helping to offset modest weather-related declines in ORV, motorcycles and boats, although all three of these segments came on strong at the end of March.
"Our product line-up has never been stronger, our boat brands fared well during the recent boat shows, dealer inventory levels are well positioned to support the peak spring retail selling season, and our strategic sourcing program is accelerating savings and value enhancement. We remain steadfastly committed to enhancing our customer-centric culture, which amplifies our investments in innovation and operational prowess, and as we look to the balance of 2019, we are confident about gaining market share as we continue bringing innovative products to our customers and solidifying our position as the leader in Powersports."
65th anniversary year off to a solid start
The company reported first quarter 2019 net income of $48 million, compared with $56 million for the 2018 first quarter. Adjusted net income for the quarter ended March 31, 2019 was $67 million compared to $74 million.
Gross profit increased +9 percent to $352 million for the first quarter of 2019 from $323 million in the first quarter of 2018. Reported gross profit margin was 23.6 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2019 compared to 24.9 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2018. Gross profit for the first quarter of 2019 includes the negative impact of $7 million of restructuring and realignment costs. Excluding these costs, first quarter 2019 adjusted gross profit was $359 million, or 24.0 percent of adjusted sales.
For the first quarter of 2018 adjusted gross profit of $329 million, or 25.4 percent of adjusted sales, excludes the negative impact of $6 million of restructuring and realignment costs. Gross profit margins on an adjusted basis were down 140 basis points. Higher average selling prices were more than offset by tariff costs and the addition of boats, which has lower gross profit margins.
Off-Road Vehicles (“ORV”) and snowmobiles segment sales, including PG&A, totaled $867 million for the first quarter of 2019, up four percent over $833 million for the first quarter of 2018, driven by growth in side-by-side sales. PG&A sales for ORV and snowmobiles combined increased 12 percent in the first quarter of 2019 compared to the first quarter last year. Gross profit increased four percent to $252 million in the first quarter of 2019, compared to $244 million in the first quarter of 2018. Gross profit percentage declined 20 basis points during the quarter as higher average selling prices and favorable product mix were more than offset by higher tariff costs.
ORV wholegood sales for the first quarter of 2019 increased 4 percent, primarily driven by increased average selling prices. Polaris North American ORV retail sales decreased mid-single digits percent for the quarter, with side-by-side vehicles down low-single digits percent and ATV vehicles down low-double digits percent. The North American ORV industry was down low-single digits percent compared to the first quarter last year.
Snowmobile wholegood sales in the first quarter of 2019 were $13 million, down 28 percent compared to $18 million in the first quarter of last year. Polaris snowmobile retail sales were up high-single digits percent during the first quarter of 2019 and up about 20 percent for the twelve- month season ending March 2019. North American industry retail was up low-double digits percent for the first quarter and up low-single digits percent for the season ending March 2019. Polaris gained significant market share for the season.
Global Adjacent Markets segment sales, including PG&A, decreased seven percent to $105 million in the 2019 first quarter compared to $113 million in the 2018 first quarter. Reported gross profit decreased five percent to $30 million in the first quarter of 2019, compared to $31 million in the first quarter of 2018. Adjusted gross profit decreased 6 percent to $30 million in the first quarter of 2019, compared to $32 million in the first quarter of 2018 due to negative product mix.
Aftermarket segment sales of $221 million in the 2019 first quarter increased slightly compared to $220 million in the 2018 first quarter. TAP sales in the first quarter of 2019 were $197 million, which was down two percent from $201 million in the first quarter of 2018. TAP sales declined two percent due to ongoing soft wholesale sales along with lower e-commerce demand, while the company's other aftermarket brands increased sales over 20 percent. Gross profit decreased to $56 million in the first quarter of 2019, compared to $58 million in the first quarter of 2018 due to negative product mix.
Boats segment sales, which consist of the Boat Holdings acquisition which closed July 2, 2018, were $185 million in the 2019 first quarter. Gross profit was $36 million or 19.6 percent of sales in the first quarter of 2019.
Parts, Garments and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales increased eight percent for the 2019 first quarter, primarily driven by growth in ORV and snowmobiles.
International sales to customers outside of North America, including PG&A, totaled $203 million for the first quarter of 2019, down four percent, from the same period in 2018. Increased Indian Motorcycle and PG&A sales were more than offset by negative foreign exchange movements, which reduced sales by seven percent for the quarter.
Given the 2019 first quarter results, the company is increasing its full year earnings guidance and now expects adjusted net income to be in the range of $6.05 to $6.30 per diluted share, compared with adjusted net income of $6.56 per diluted share for 2018. Full year 2019 sales expectation remains unchanged at up 11 to 13 percent. The full year earnings guidance is inclusive of the company's expectations related to the negative impact of external factors such as the annualized impact of tariffs, adverse foreign exchange impacts and higher interest rates, totaling approximately $1.50 per diluted share, on a combined basis. Absent these items, the company is expected to generate positive earnings growth on a year-over-year basis.

HardDrive is the American V-twin division of Western Power Sports and has warehouses located throughout the U.S. at Fresno, California; Memphis, Tennessee; Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania; Ashley, Indiana; Midlothian, Texas; and its Headquarters warehouse at Boise, Idaho.
Recent product news from Firebrand include 'Loose Cannon' slip-ons for M-8 Softails (AMD March) and, seen here, 'Smoothbore' headers for '17-'19 M-8 Harley-Davidson Touring and Tri-Glide models.
Engineered to fit under stock heatshields, the 'Smoothbore' header's open collector design "eliminates the congestion and allows the M-8 to breathe. By utilizing the stock Harley heatshields and crossover pipe, 'Smoothbore' headers give all the benefits of a full header system, while retailing at hundreds less than the competition."
Designed to increase both airflow and decibel volume, "they will add power and sound while reducing the heat attributed to stock head pipes. The 1 3/4" head pipes merge into a smooth flowing collector, are compatible with 12 mm and 18 mm sensors along with 18 mm wideband oxygen sensors, have industrial chrome coating for additional durability and work with 2017 and later stock mufflers or Firebrand slip-ons."

Twin Power
Twin Power Introduces Shocker Battery Line
Twin Power, known for its high-quality parts and accessories designed for the American V-twin enthusiast, has announced the addition of Shocker batteries to its product line.
Developed specifically for V-twins and offered at a very competitive price, Shocker batteries are factory-activated and sealed AGM-style batteries, assembled in a robust stock-appearing ABS case with a matt black finish.
The terminals are a flush mount design with dual connection points (14 amp models have one connection point) and captive internal nuts for a fumble-free installation. Features include extra thick plates for extreme vibration resistance, a heat-sealed cover to protect against leakage and corrosion, and fully sealed posts.
Twin Power Brand Manager James Simonelli says that "independent laboratory testing parameters include high-rate discharge, ten-hour discharge, vibration, short circuit, and zero-degree Fahrenheit cold cranking amp tests. Also, these units were subject to extreme field-testing conditions during their development.
"The Shocker might be offered at a reasonable price, but is not short on performance," continued James. "This is by no means a standard 'metric' or 'universal' type battery. We have found through testing that any time terminal adaptors or spacers are used, amperage transfer during the initial start may be compromised.
"You may get strong starts after the initial installation, but over time, vibration, arcing and corrosion can affect the battery's ability to deliver reliable performance. The Shocker won't let you down."
Fitments are available in all popular 14, 20, 24 and 30 Amp configurations.

Harley-Davidson
Harley Pimps Modest Domestic Market Share Increase and "Stronger Than Expected Retail Sales" in Response to a Down First Quarter
Harley-Davidson is adamant that its 1Q 2019 performance was "better than expected," stating that "company actions resulted in earnings per share and retail sales finishing stronger than expected during the [first] quarter" and that "the company's 'More Roads to Harley-Davidson' accelerated plan for growth continued to progress and deliver results."
In a quarter that saw them announce the acquisition of kids E-bike maker 'StaCyc', add a President for the Harley-Davidson brand to the senior management team, and "broaden reach" with the $19k Electra Glide Standard, the company kept shareholders placated with diluted EPS of $0.80 per share that was "ahead of company expectations" (cash dividend for the quarter is up to $0.375 from $0.37 in the year-ago quarter - a +1.4% dividend increase), the repurchase of $52.6 million of shares and with domestic U.S. retail motorcycle sales "only" down by -4.16% (38,797 units) in a 601cc+ domestic U.S. market that was down by -4.74% (for a modestly increased 51.1% market share).
Harley-Davidson worldwide retail sales decreased -3.8%; international retail sales were down -3.3%. The drop in domestic U.S. retail sales was said to be "driven by continued weak industry sales" with "first quarter worldwide retail sales impacted by the limited availability of Street motorcycles due to the recall announced in January."
Matt Levatich, President and Chief Executive Officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc says that "we are acting with agility and discipline to take full advantage of rapidly evolving global markets. Harley-Davidson's U.S. market share growth and retail sales performance in the first quarter are further evidence of the effects we are having as we continue to implement and dial-in our More Roads efforts.
"We are driven by our unparalleled rider focus and deep analytics that are guiding our efforts today and into the future. We, along with our dealers, are determined to lead and stimulate global industry growth."
'agility and discipline'
Harley-Davidson's strategic objectives through 2027 are to "build two million new riders in the U.S., grow international business to 50 percent of annual volume, launch 100 new high impact motorcycles, doing so profitably and sustainably, and delivering exciting products in existing and new spaces, broader access to Harley-Davidson and an optimized customer experience through an even stronger dealer network."
Harley continues to believe that it can do all this while maintaining its "current investment and return profile and capital allocation strategy," self-funding its strategic plans with the "new opportunities expected to drive revenue growth and expand operating margin through 2022."
"In the short eight months since we announced our More Roads plan, we continue to accelerate our progress to build the next generation of Harley-Davidson riders," said Levatich. "During the first quarter we intensified our march by investing in our future and adding capabilities that we're confident will inspire riders today and for generations to come."
The company says that it "increased its reach and impact in the first quarter" with 278,000 "new riders" joining Harley-Davidson in 2018 in the U.S. "This group is the most diverse across age, ethnicity and gender in all of the years Harley-Davidson has tracked this data, expanded access to new customers in part with the launch of the new Electra Glide Standard, increased marketing support, reaching more consumers sooner and driving action such as increased traffic to H-D.com, brand awareness, trial and sales," with media spend up by nearly +90%.
The company started supplying motorcycles to ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) emerging markets from its Thailand operations in late 2018. "The tariff mitigation realized by this strategy allowed more competitive pricing and helped drive a Q1 retail sales increase of 126 percent in these markets."
In the first quarter of 2018 the company commenced its multi-year manufacturing optimization initiative anchored by the consolidation of its motorcycle assembly plant in Kansas City, Mo. into its plant in York, Pa.
While the U.S. 601+ cc industry was down -4.7%, resulting in a first quarter U.S. market share up by +0.6 pts to 51.1%, in Europe H-D market share is said to have been down by -1.6% (to 8.8%) in a market that was up by +19.42% at 111,317 new motorcycles registered in Europe in the first three months of 2019.
Revenue from motorcycles and related products was down by -12.34% at $1,195.6m; gross profit was down by -26.67% at $347.4m; operating income was way down at $167.1m (-29.31%), with operating income from motorcycles and related products down massively against the year ago quarter by -37.29% at $108.3m "behind lower shipments."
Cash and marketable securities were $759.6 million at the end of the first quarter 2019, compared to $753.5 million in 2018, with $32.7 million of cash generated from operating activities in the first quarter of 2019 compared to $191.6 million in 2018.
For the full year 2019, the company continues to expect motorcycle shipments to be approximately 217,000 to 222,000 motorcycles; 65,500 to 70,500 in 2Q. Motorcycles segment operating margin as a percent of revenue is expected to be approximately 8.0 to 9.0 percent, with capital expenditures of $225 million to $245 million, including approximately $20 million to support manufacturing optimization.
Financial Services segment operating income is expected to be down year-over-year; HDFS retail loan performance (30+ day delinquencies) were 3.73% in 1Q 2019 - the highest/worst since 1Q 2011 with annualized loss experience also higher than for much of the time since 2010.

AFT
Jared Mees Wins in Texas; 2nd FTR750 Podium Sweep of Season
Indian Motorcycle Racing, presented by Progressive Motorcycle Insurance, continued its strong start to the season's AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines, as the FTR750 secured its second podium sweep of the season at the Texas Half-Mile (April 20).
Back-to-back reigning Grand National Champion Jared Mees collected his first win of the 2019 season, while Wrecking Crew teammate Briar Bauman finished second, and Indian Motorcycle privateer Brandon Robinson (Kennedy Racing/Armbruster Racing Indian FTR750) rounded out the podium with a third-place finish.
Mees and Bauman separated themselves from the field almost immediately at the start of the race. The two teammates spent the majority of the race jockeying for position, and after a series of lead changes throughout the early stages, Mees put some distance between him and Bauman in lap 22 and did not relinquish his lead again. This first victory of the season moved Mees up to third on the championship leaderboard.
"We are thrilled to see Jared get his first win of the season and make up some ground to stay near the top of the leaderboard," said Gary Gray, Vice President Racing, Technology & Service for Indian Motorcycle. "If this race was any indication, this is going to be an exciting season to watch Jared and Briar push each other to new heights the rest of the year."
Mees' victory snaps a seven-race winless streak and moves him into second on the all-time win list for Half-Miles (27 in total). For Bauman, the second-place finish continues a strong start to the season that has seen him reach the podium in all three races, including a victory at the Daytona TT. His impressive start has him at the top of the leaderboard with 62 points, followed by Robinson and Mees with 53 and 47 points respectively. Fellow Wrecking Crew Rider Bronson Bauman is eleventh with 24 points.
In the Roof Systems AFT Singles presented by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys, the win went to Shayna Texter (No. 52 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing SX-F 450; second place was taken by Mikey Rush (No. 15 RMR Honda/Red Riders Rewards Honda CRF450R,) with emerging 16-year-old phenom James Ott (No. 193 Media Home Inc./Kawasaki of Simi Valley Honda CRF450R), making his professional debut.
It was a family affair in the 15 lap Texas Half-Mile AFT Production Twins class as Shayna Texter's brother, Cory Texter (No. 65 G&G Racing/Holeshot Powersports Yamaha MT-07), was victorious in the opening race of the 11-race 2019 AFT Production Twins championship.
Ryan Varnes (No. 68 Varnes Racing/RoyBuilt/Don's Kawasaki Ninja 650) was second, with 2017 AFT Singles champ Kolby Carlile (No. 136 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07) third, and Dalton Gauthier (No. 122 Racing Unlimited Kawasaki/D&D Cycles Kawasaki Ninja 650) fourth.
Next up is the Wild Horse TT at the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park, Chandler, AZ., April 27; the So-Cal Half-Mile at Perris Auto Speedway, Perris, CA., May 11; the legendary Sacramento Mile at Cal Expo, Sacramento, CA., May 18; then the first of two visits to the Illinois State Fairgrounds this season for Springfield Mile I on May 26. www.americanflattrack.com

Avon Cobra Chrome
“The new standard in cruising/sport-cruising technology in H, V and W-speed ratings, compared to its predecessor the new Avon Cobra Chrome delivers 10% more mileage and a 5% larger footprint. It delivers excellent handling under dynamic circumstances with precision feel and tire feedback.” The advanced Avon cruiser tread pattern is augmented by the signature Cobra Chrome snake skin design. It is available in a full selection of fitments from 15” to 23” in a wide variety of sizes.
BMC Air Filter Elements
The Italian BMC ‘The Red Filter’, as used in Formula 1, Le Mans, MotoGP and WorldSBK, is designed as a no hassle fit upgrade for the OEM paper air filter element. Manufactured with a metallic mesh which contains multiple cotton layers of oiled filtration material, the proven construction allows improved air flow - for stock to all-out performance applications. To further help prevent small impurities enter the engine, filtration oil is used to create a ‘sticky’ barrier which allows air flow but helps retain small particles of up to 7 microns. The company says that “all filters are precision made and continuously checked during production for the highest obtainable quality.” Filters are washable and reusable. There are options available for selected S&S Super B&D and E/G applications.
Vans X Cult waffle grips
Vans sneakers are well known for their distinctive and effective ‘waffle’ style tread, and now a collaboration between Cultcrew and Vans has resulted in a range of motorcycle grips, made with the same classic ‘waffle’ sole texture. A small dome in the center “makes these grips fit like a glove.” The overall length 125 mm; a throttle sleeve is not included and must be reused or purchased separately. NAMZ Custom Cycle Products
RBTS Module for Scouts
Jeff Zielinski, owner of Oreland, Pennsylvania based NAMZ Custom Cycle Products says “we have received many calls from customers and industry professionals alike about attempts to customize the lighting on Indian Scouts.
“Our new Run-Brake-Turn Signal (RBTS) module, rear, red LED kit and front running light module is unlike the RBTS module for Scouts, as that converts the rear signals to all three functions.
Our brand new module talks to the bike, letting it know all is OK even though you removed the OEM taillight and replaced it with whatever version you choose. We wire it up using the OEM turn signal connectors, so you can simply reconnect with ease. No codes and 100% plug and play”.
The full range of NAMZ/Badlands products is available through Drag Specialties, Parts Unlimited, Tucker, Mid-USA, V-Twin, Parts Canada, Motovan, Les Importations Thibault, Parts Europe, Custom Chrome Europe, Motorcycle Storehouse, W&W Cycles, Zodiac, Rollies Speed Shop and Wildrider International Pty Ltd. Dealers can also order direct from the NAMZ/Badlands website.

Blud Racing Lubricants
Blud Racing Lubricants Seeks New Distribution Partners for Expanded and Re-Branded Line-Up
Scottsdale, Arizona based Blud Racing Lubricants broke into the racing market in 2017 with a series of 100% synthetic oils “with one-of-a-kind formulation and technology unlike anything else in the racing world,” says CEO Jefferson Green.
After grabbing the attention of some of the top racers across the United States, Green says they are “taking that success up a notch” and rolling out a full product line of new oils, lubricants and cleaners for on- and off-road racers.
Dubbed the “Blud Racing Pro Series,” the new line-up includes 4-stroke racing engine oils (in 10W40, 10W50, 15W50 - 100% synthetic) that are formulated using a “new generation base of stocks and proprietary technology specifically created for the professional racer. They deliver outstanding clutch feel with no slippage or grabbing, and provide for a smoother operating transmission, exceptional thermal stability and enhanced protection against engine and transmission wear and tear,” says Green.
Additional Pro Series products include a 100% synthetic 2-stroke racing pre-mix, suspension fluids, gear/differential oils, chain lube and penetrating lube.
In addition, Blud Racing Lubricants is introducing its “Blud Racing Pro Elite Series” to protect in the most brutal racing applications. Its 15W50 100% Synthetic Severe Duty Racing Engine Oil is designed for races in heavy mud, dirt, silt, etc. and protects the clutch, runs cooler and can handle the heat.
The company is also offering its “Bludline Series” of machine care products - “Kick-Ass” degreaser, PolyClean Aqueous degreaser/cleaner and a multi-surface detailer that is said to “safely remove dirt, dust and grime without scratching the surface.”
Green told AMD that “we are now ready to look to expand our distribution network. Blud Racing Lubricants is a brand born out of American Synthol - a 38-year-old synthetic lubricant company known globally for its Amerilube and Eagle brands. American Synthol is the technological leader in industrial synthetic oils.
“Today, Blud is dedicated to producing and distributing the highest quality products for racers in all classes and disciplines including Motocross, ATV/Quad, Trophy Kart, Modified Kart, Kart, Pro Buggy, Turbo Production UTV, Production 1000 UTV, road racing, and others.
“Blud's current line-up of engine oils (MotoBlud, DirtBlud, BikerBlud and HawgBlud) is being re-branded under the “Blud Powersport Series” name. Though the names of the products will be changed and shortened, (i.e. MotoBlud 10W40 will now be Blud 10W40), the products will remain the same.”

Rinehart Racing
2-into-1 for 2017 and Up Touring Models
Asheville, North Carolina based Rinehart Racing has updated its 2-into-1 system for the latest Milwaukee-Eight equipped Touring models.
The company says that it is “designed to combine serious performance boosts and the trademark Rinehart sound into a sleek and sophisticated package that beautifully accentuates Harley’s Milwaukee-Eight engine. The stepped header technology efficiently scavenges the exhaust, allowing the engine to operate at peak performance.
“This system provides powerful low-end torque without sacrificing top-end horsepower, making it the best performing 2-into-1 in the industry. The smooth aesthetics start with a half-megaphone, half-straight muffler body, while precision laser-cut heat shields and collector heat shield complete the look.”
Available in chrome or black with chrome or black standard end caps, Rinehart says it also accepts a wide range of 4” end caps, including all its Moto Series and Eagle Beak varieties. It is compatible with 2017 and up Touring models, including the 2019, but does not fit Tri Glide or Freewheeler models.

Is the Future a Hybrid of Mixed Platforms?
The rumors surrounding Harley's MY2020 announcement later this year are mixed, but mostly suggesting a 'holding pattern' of paint, accessory and possible tech changes.
With 2020 production validation due to have been underway by now, I'm hearing that an extension of traction control may be on the cards, with the inevitable resulting reconfiguring of some components.
With LiveWire set to debut before the end of the year, it would appear (and it is logical) that at this stage Harley is already looking way beyond the impact that the MY2020 announcement will have on stakeholders (all stakeholders) for their salvation, in the hope that they are doing enough to keep the sharks from circling any closer.
There's no question that Harley needs a good spring and summer selling season though, because with 4Q 2018 showing them barely breaking even, budget for the dividends and buy-backs that have been the primary shareholder value tools has to be running dangerously low - especially at a time when they are looking to self-finance the 'More Roads' objectives from house-keeping.
The evolution of the new model strategy outlined in 'More Roads' will still have three to five years to play out before it can realistically be expected to have positive balance sheet trickle down. Harley is still facing a huge timing deficit.
The recent announcement of the StaCyc children's mini E-Bike acquisition is an ostensibly logical and 'righteous' step, one that plugs an entry level gap that allows the Bar 'n Shield to be indelibly associated with E-Bike opportunities for new generations as they age with the brand.
However, it also shows just how deeply Harley is leveraging its interim future, its ability to traverse its timing deficit gap, on a market that everyone from Scott Wine, CEO of Polaris, on down sees, at this stage, as one that is all cost with no proven long-term benefit as yet.
“huge timing deficit”
In this regard, the European experience is not helpful. The new model registration statistics from EU markets for 2018 are chilling in terms of placing Harley's LiveWire ambitions in a real world context - less than 8,000 units were registered in a market of some 350m riding age consumers that is, theoretically, at least a decade ahead of the United States in terms of its acceptance of the E-Bike message.
It is to be hoped that there isn't some kind of 'Darkside' Force that dooms everything that Harley touches in E-Bike terms to be problematic. Having partnered with two now defunct E-Bike businesses in the shape of Mission Motorcycles (the original LiveWire prototype) and Alta Motors, let's hope that a perfectly promising project such as StaCyc doesn't go the same way.
With Polaris having chosen to not capitalize, yet, on the investment it made into certain Brammo assets some five or six years ago, and with news that BRP, who are known to still be lusting after a position in the motorcycle industry, recently reported to have acquired certain remnants of Alta Motors, it would appear to be a space worth watching regardless of the realistic possibilities for returns on investment.
Much of the rest of the Brammo E-Bike assets were acquired a couple of years ago by diesel engine manufacture Cummins. Personally, I still find it of interest that Cummins CEO and Chairman Tom Linebarger, who would have signed-off on that acquisition, is a non-executive director on the board of Harley-Davidson. Also, that former Harley CEO Keith Wandell is currently serving as Chairman of the Board at a rejuvenated Exide Technologies. Is Matt Levatich cultivating his own personal E-Nostra?
Maybe the lens through which I am eying the glorious sunlit uplands of mankind's brave new electric world are tainted by cynicism - either way I can't help thinking that viewing the 'Rush-to-E' through rose tinted glasses is premature.
I had the pleasure of a conversation with one of the industry's genuinely 'smart guys' 18 months ago - Stefan Pierer, the majority owner and CEO of KTM Motorcycles. KTM is embracing E-Bikes, and that of itself is a sign of sorts, as pretty much everything that KTM touches currently turns to gold.
His company made and sold over 260,000 KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles in 2018 and is on course for a self-imposed target of 400,000 by 2022. His view is that yes, society needs to address the issues arising from emissions, but that the future is hybrid, not pure electric.
Maybe the future is one of mixed portfolios of platforms, each specified for the task, replicating the way that a dizzying array of internal combustion engine solutions have themselves been refined for their tasks.
This is a sentiment echoed by Hugh Charvat, the recently ensconced new CEO of MAG, when I interviewed him in Texas in January. His is a largely automotive and motorsport background, and he too sees a mixed portfolio future in which gasoline still has a role to play.
If the colossal investments that both Bosch and Audi are making in bringing 'clean and green' synthetic gasoline trial production plants on stream in Europe this year work out, then maybe those who are saying that the story of our transition from gasoline dependency is still at an early stage, we think are right.
Then there is the issue of charging infrastructure and capacity for an entirely electric road transport fleet, and the need to meet its power needs from renewables if the objective is to be met.
Perhaps, with the benefit of hindsight, 100 years from now the times in which we are living will be seen as being more like the way the era of transition from horsepower at the end of the 19th century to the fledgling automotive culture of the early 20th looks to us now.
Those who think they have all the answers invariably do not. In fact, they generally haven't even understood the questions.
It may be that history will judge Harley's rush to 'E' to have been an act of perfectly timed genius. Maybe, by the end of this century, Harley-Davidson will be the global god of future-facing transport commerce - an all-encompassing future status the kind that Asimov created for his fictional global superpower 'U.S Robots and Mechanical Men Inc.' A future in which Black and Orange is the color of all future transport solutions? On the other hand, maybe not.

MotorCity
MotorCity V-Twin Expo
A one-day open/public show on Saturday February 23rd, the MotorCity V-Twin Expo was a "great success," according to Marketing Director Melissa Wangler.
"Those who attended enjoyed checking out their favorite brands and manufacturers, networking, asking questions and participating in live product demos. Plus, they were able to browse the latest products, expo style, take a first look at the unveiling of the latest MotorCity Customs creations and watch MotorCity H-D techs perform a live build on the showroom floor."
The event attracted a number of well known vendors, including Sport Chrome, who were displaying rotors and 'Reinforcer' custom wheels (available through Tucker V-Twin); exhaust specialists Vance & Hines and Cobra; Wizards Cleaning Products; Progressive Suspension; Performance Machine; Twin Power; Mustang; Kuryakyn and Rockford Fosgate.
The project was headed up by MotorCity Harley-Davidson (Detroit) GM and partner Craig Collins. MC H-D has always been a 'progressive' store, always looking to try out new things and often flying in the face of convention. Well known for a summer HarleyFest (June 8/9 2019) that can attract up to 10,000 people, which is outstanding for a dealership event weekend, Craig added a custom dimension to the dealership in 2016 with the launch of MotorCity Customs - an already award-winning and successful custom build business-with-the-business.
"I started MotorCity Customs the same year we bought the present building and have had great success with it. Unlike most H-D stores, we won't restrict ourselves to only selling bolt on H-D product, we are completely the opposite. Far from being anti-aftermarket, we embrace it and value the additional revenue and customization opportunities it brings to riders in our area."
The entire facility is 106,000 square feet and sits on 12 acres. The dealership occupies 75,000 square feet of that space.
The MotorCity V-Twin Expo is something that he hopes to "grow into a really cool annual event. More grass roots and intimate than a big trade show - we've got about 30,000 sq ft we can use for the Expo."
