Local Man Carver Takes Springfield Mile AFT Twins Presented by Vance & Hines
The first of this season’s two AFT presented by Vance & Hines Springfield Mile races (May 28) saw local hero Jeffrey Carver Jr. (No. 23 Roof-Systems/Indian of Metro Milwaukee Scout FTR750) take the win at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.
Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing SDI Scout FTR750) was second, Kenny Coolbeth (No. 2 Nila Racing/Columbia Avionics Indian Scout FTR750) third, rising star Davis Fisher (No. 67 Double D Performance/RMR/Bob Lanphere Indian Scout FTR750) in fourth and Bryan Smith (No. 4 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) fifth.
The triumph was Carver’s third-ever premier-class win, leaving him just a Short Track victory short of a career Grand Slam. Additionally, he’s only the second rider from Illinois to win the Springfield Mile. The only other Illinois native to win the race was Dave Camlin from Rock Island, Ill., who won both races in 1996 aboard a Harley-Davidson.
Chad Cose (No. 49 Indian Motorcycle of Oklahoma City Scout FTR750), Henry Wiles (No. 17 Bandit Industries/Wilco Racing/Willing Built Indian Scout FTR750) and Mikey Rush (No. 54 G&G Racing/Machete Energy Yamaha FZ-07) finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Meanwhile, 57-year-old Ronnie Jones (No. 266 Estenson Racing/Rod Lake Indian Scout FTR750) not only increased his record as the oldest rider to make an AFT Twins Main Event by a week, he finished in ninth place while doing so. Jay Maloney (No. 12 Indian Motorcycle of Springfield/JMC Scout FTR750) rounded out the top-ten.
This race meeting saw the AMA give a debut to its AFT Production Twins class trial - a class specifically designed to provide qualified AFT Singles riders a chance to get some race time on production-based twins with an eye toward easing their eventual graduation into the AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines class.
Michael Inderbitzin (No. 54 Weirbach Racing/Kawasaki USA Kawasaki Ninja 650) backed up a top-ten run in Saturday’s Springfield TT Singles with a victory in the first-ever AFT Productions Twins race, ahead of Tristan Avery (No. 16 Ron Ayers/Mr. Sign Kawasaki Ninja 650) second and Jordan Harris (No. 17 Roy Built Kawasaki Ninja 650) third.
The AFT Production Twins class will be back in action for its second race when the series returns to Springfield for the 100th Harley-Davidson Springfield Mile II on September 2. The next race is the Indian Motorcycle Red Mile presented by Indian Motorcycle of Lexington on June 2 in Lexington, Ky., followed two weeks later (June 16) by the OKC Mile presented by Indian Motorcycle at Oklahoma City and the Lima, Ohio, Half Mile on June 30.

Royal Enfield Himalayan Motorcycle is now available in North America – the 411cc single cylinder, air-cooled, 4-stroke SOHC adventure model begins at $4,499 MSRP. Royal Enfield North America is headquartered in Milwaukee and headed up by ex-Harley man Rod Copes. The Himalayan is built on a rugged, duplex, split-cradle frame designed and developed by race chassis legend Harris Performance in the UK, who Royal Enfield bought three years ago. The overhead camshaft engine forms the base for its new long-stroke LS 410 engine – “the engine delivers high torque and usable power at lower rpms for smooth riding in higher gears at lower speeds, making it easier to climb hills or manoeuvre through traffic; its modern design and materials translate to increased efficiency and low maintenance,” according to Copes.
Polaris has acquired the historic Glamis Beach Store and surrounding 166-acre property near the Mexican border in southern California. The company says it intends to maintain Glamis Beach Store traditions and improve services to patrons and off-road enthusiasts. The store was opened by the LeBlanc family in 1979 to “provide Glamis visitors with a home base stocked with all the amenities they need while enjoying the Glamis dunes,” said Jeannie “Mama Jeannie” LeBlanc. “It only makes sense to partner with the leader in the off-road recreational community to carry on the traditions.”

Michael Lichter
Lichter at Buffalo Chip - “Passion Built - Garage to Gallery”
For the 10th year, custom bikes built from the pure passion and love of the machine will be exhibited at the Buffalo Chip in August, free to the public, with legendary custom bike and lifestyle lensman Michael Lichter curating.
“The pure love of art and motorcycles will bring together a stunning collection of masterpieces for the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s 2018 ‘Motorcycles as Art’ exhibit,” says Buffalo Chip supremo Rod Woodruff.
The exhibit will feature the work of over 40 builders and artists who demonstrate incredible passion and have built motorcycles especially for this show. All support themselves by other means, yet they all are building professional-quality custom motorcycles outside of a professional workplace. Each bike will be lit with theater lights and displayed atop an elevated pedestal to better give guests an open view from every angle. The Sturgis Buffalo Chip will host the exhibit in a 7,000 sq. ft. dedicated gallery in its Event Center.
“Michael has once again brought together a group of incredible artists and builders, who all have a real passion for motorcycles. The fact that these people are creating these bikes, mostly in the evenings or at weekends, after a full work week, is amazing. We will clearly see their love for the work.”
The ‘Motorcycles as Art’ exhibition has become more than just a bike show in its 10-year residency at the Buffalo Chip. Industry professionals frequent these one-time collections to examine the new ideas and trends put on display by builders from all walks of life and geographic locations.
“We are looking for the best custom bikes these builders can produce, hopefully the best they have ever built, to show off how diverse the world of custom bike building is,” said exhibit curator Michael Lichter.
“It isn’t just a small handful of professionals who are driving this world and deciding where it is headed, nor has it ever been. Now, through new means of communication, these non-pros have a bigger voice than ever before.”
As a follow up to the 2017 ‘Old Iron – Young Blood’ exhibit, which focused on the work of builders under the age of 35, this exhibit broadens the diversity of the artists to include those passionate about custom building motorcycles even through retirement.
Most of those chosen for the 2018 exhibit must find the energy and passion to work on their projects after returning home from a full-time day job. Some, such as Harley-Davidson Motor Company Vice President of Styling & Design Brad Richards, work in the industry, but must still find personal time to fuel their passion for building.
In addition to the custom bikes and work of individual artists on the walls, the show will also include a display of ten hand-painted helmets, each from a different artist, provided by Biltwell Helmets, an exhibition sponsor.

Polaris
Polaris Creates New “Chief Customer Engagement and Growth Officer” Role
Polaris Industries has announced that it has hired Julie Gilbert as Chief Customer Engagement and Growth Officer. Gilbert will dual-report to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Scott Wine and President of Motorcycles Steve Menneto.
“In this strategic leadership role, Julie will deepen our relationships with our existing valued customers, while also expanding brand awareness and connecting with new consumer bases,” said Wine. “For the better part of two decades, she has been growing brands and businesses through innovative, customer-centric strategies that build inclusive communities, and authentically engage new customer segments. Her tenacious, winning attitude combined with her creative thought leadership and significant experience will be a great combination for Polaris and I am excited to have her on our leadership team.”
Polaris says that Gilbert will be responsible for developing and implementing marketing solutions and growth strategies that introduce new consumers to the powersports industry and connect with customer segments outside of the company’s traditional core target market. She will also have oversight for Polaris’ corporate marketing, sponsorships and communication efforts, and will help cultivate and launch programs aimed at further engaging RZR owners through the development of rider groups.
Most recently, Gilbert was the founder and CEO of PreciouStatus, a mobile software platform and technology company that creates real-time connections for those in professional care facilities in education, healthcare and the military. Prior to her time at PreciouStatus, Gilbert founded WOLF, a consumer innovation consulting firm that helped organizations grow and expand through improved products and services aimed at the female consumer.
She also spent nearly nine years at Best Buy, quickly earning positions of increasing responsibility and culminating in a highly impactful role accountable for new market development. Gilbert was credited with driving billions of dollars in incremental revenue through transformational initiatives that more directly connected female consumers with the brand.
“From snowmobiles to motorcycles, I’ve been a lifelong rider and have admired Polaris and its product portfolio for a number of years. As the Chief Customer Engagement and Growth Officer, I’m ready to help Polaris tell its story in order to accelerate growth, broaden its reach and attract new customers to Polaris and the powersports industry,” said Gilbert.

Campagna
Campagna Unveils 100% Electric T-REX and Seeks Additional Dealers
Campagna Motors has announced the development of an all-electric T-REX prototype “Reverse Trike” three-wheeler concept.
Having previously established successful partnerships with BMW and Harley-Davidson to source powerplants for its T-REX and V13R respectively, this undertaking consisted of integrating Zero Motorcycles’ powertrain technology into the chassis of the T-REX “for an even more dynamic and unique offering.
“The motors, batteries and controllers have been seamlessly integrated into the T-REX, creating a high-performance vehicle, without the need for gasoline.
AndrĂ© Morissette, President of Campagna Motors, says that “thanks to the hard work of our dedicated team and partners, the T-REX has become the benchmark for three-wheeled performance. Our collaboration with Zero Motorcycles brings a whole new level of innovation and originality to this already exhilarating platform.”
Morissette went on to say that “Zero is known for consistently producing the electric vehicle industry’s most energy and power dense battery packs, offering more range and performance than any production electric motorcycle on the market. Their advanced lithium-ion batteries are also maintenance-free.”
For Zero, Director of Business Development, Jim Callahan said: “We are excited that Campagna selected our industry-leading powertrain technology to develop their electric T-REX. “Zero’s electric powertrain is an ideal solution for the ultimate three-wheeled experience. This vehicle is an absolute thrill to drive.”
The prototype was being unveiled for the first time at the Montreal Electric Vehicle Show; a second more advanced prototype is planned for the summer of 2018.
Campagna Motors was founded in 1988 in the province of Quebec, Canada, by Daniel Campagna, who devoted more than eight years to the creation of the T-REX, the first prototype being shown in 1994.
He and his company did much to create what is now referenced as the “Reverse Trike” market, with majors such as Can-Am and Polaris having entered the sector in recent years with volume production machines. However, Morissette has again shown himself to be a step ahead.
With this new version and the collaboration with Zero, Morissette has shown that his company has continued to innovate with a genuine cross-over vehicle that could pull customers from all over the powersports and automotive radar.
He told AMD: “We are now actively looking for dealers in the powersports industry for selected territories in North America. We want to develop a network of franchised dealers that can sell and service the vehicles and parts and accessories.
“Our vehicle in a dealer’s showroom would bring in a lot of high-end customers, and these vehicles do not compete with motorcycles; they bring another demographic of customers, people who want the thrill and performance of motorcycles, but the stability and safety of cars.”
Morissette also told AMD that his company is now ready to appoint additional dealers from the powersports industry for selected territories for the existing gas-powered T-REX and stunning V13R ‘Roadster’ reverse trikes. JIMS
Cylinder hold down nuts
Camarillo, California based performance and workshop specialist JIMS says that its new cylinder hold down nuts are an effective way to keep the cylinders in place when the heads are removed from the engine.
This is particularly useful when installing the second cylinder over the piston and rings after the first cylinder has already been installed, or when rotating the crankshaft for other work. In either case there is risk - even a slight rocking of the cylinder can damage the base gasket or cause a cylinder to lift entirely off the cases.
These hold down nuts help prevent that risk of movement and are machined with different threads on each end to accommodate either the Milwaukee-Eight or the Twin Cam.

American Flat Track
Mees Makes it Five From Six at Sacramento
Round six of the 2018 AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines saw three of the flat track and Sacramento Mile legends going head to head for this year’s Harley-Davidson Sacramento Mile presented by Cycle Gear at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds on May 19.
The win went to defending Grand National Champion Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing SDI Scout FTR750), his fifth win of the season so far, his 35th AFT career win in total and his first at the Sacramento mile.
Retiring legend Kenny Coolbeth Jr. (No. 2 Nila Racing, Columbia Avionics Indian Scout FTR750) scored second, with Bryan Smith (No. 4 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750 - owner of seven straight Sacramento Mile victories) returning from the broken left fibula sustained three weeks ago at the Texas Half mile to scoop third place.
It was another great race for Indian Motorcycle. In addition to Wrecking Crew factory riders Mees (1st), Smith (3rd), and Brad Baker (No. 6 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) in 4th, Coolbeth (2nd), Henry Wiles (No. 17 Wilco Racing/Willy Built/Bandit Industries Indian Scout FTR750) in 5th, Davis Fisher (No. 67 RMR/Double D Performance Indian Scout FTR750) in 6th and Chad Cose (No. 49 Indian Motorcycle of Oklahoma City Scout FTR750) in 7th combined to claim the top seven positions on the night for the all-conquering FTR750. Fisher claimed the fastest lap honors.
Jake Johnson (No. 5 Estenson Racing Yamaha MT-07) was the best of the rest in eighth, with Briar Bauman (No. 14 Zanotti Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650) and Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team XG750R) completing the top ten.
Ronnie Jones (No. 266 Estenson Racing/Loral Lake Racing Indian Scout FTR750) re-established his own record as the oldest rider to make an AFT Twins Main Event. Finishing 14th, the 57-year-old Jones is the owner of 10 career AFT Twins victories, the first of which came almost four decades ago and the most recent nearly a quarter century back. He has qualified for AFT Twins Main Events across five different decades – the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, ’00s, and ’10s.
Reigning AFT Singles champion Kolby Carlile (No. 1 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) scored a spectacular victory by a mere 0.013-second margin of victory (Carlile won the championship last year without a race win). Brandon Price (No. 92 Parkinson Brothers Racing/DPC Racing Honda CRF450R) was second with Dan Bromley (No. 62 KTM North America/Bromley Motorsports 450 SX-F) third.
The 2016 class champ Ryan Wells (No. 94 RMR/Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda CRF450) was fourth with Tristen Avery (No. 16 Ron Ayers/Mr. Sign Honda CRF450R) and Jesse Janisch (No. 132 Roof Systems/West Bend Harley-Davidson-backed Yamaha YZ450F) finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. INTERMOT ‘Customized’ 2018
INTERMOT ‘Customized’ 2018
Hall 10, Cologne Exhibition Center, October 3-7
This year’s INTERMOT industry expo will again see the mainstream motorcycle industry descend on Cologne, Germany, for a celebration of all things “parts, performance and passion” that drew some 210,000 visitors in 2016.
Most of the major manufacturers will have booths there, from Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki, through to European manufactures such as BMW, Ducati and Triumph. The show caters to all sectors of the motorcycle industry, from scooters, dirt bikes and electric vehicles, right through to all kinds and displacements of on-highway vehicles with, it being a northern Europe expo, the visitor demographic being avowedly high mileage and large displacement.
This throws the major INTERMOT development of the past few years into fast focus. Harley-Davidson has always been an exhibitor there, and nowadays the Indian Motorcycle presence is increasing as the custom market - V-twin and all other platforms - takes center stage as the fastest growing part of the show.
This year sees an increased hall size for INTERMOT ‘Customized’, the ‘Show-within-the-Show’ concept with which INTERMOT has very quickly established Hall 10 as the primary international headquarters event for the custom motorcycle and custom parts, accessory and performance industry.
It will again be the host venue for the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building and, being one of the best visited halls of the six in use (it is adjacent to the three primary public entrances to the expo complex), then if the 2016 hall traffic estimates repeat, at least 140,000 people will see ‘AMD XIII’.

Barnett
Barnett 70th Anniversary
There aren’t many businesses in the Harley aftermarket that trace their lineage back to before the 1960s, and even fewer who go back even longer - one such though is Ventura, California based cable and clutch specialist Barnett Tool & Engineering.
Still family owned and operated, the company’s start came with a Huntington Park, California store front opened in 1948 by Charlie Barnett and his wife Afton.
Colleen Barnett-Taylor and her husband Mike Taylor have been keeping the flame alive, and these days Barnett operates out of a 43,000 ft state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that they moved into in nearby Ventura in 1998.
A team of some 50 people still craft market leading, direct fit OE replacement and upgrade control cables and brake lines, clutches and clutch components for Harley-Davidson and pretty much most other applications from dirt bikes and ATV through to street and sport bikes.
The Barnett story is a classic of its kind in the custom motorcycle industry. Several years ago, Mike told AMD about Charlie’s start in the motorcycle business. “Charlie left school after the eighth grade, rode freight trains from Oklahoma to California. When he got to the West Coast, he met Afton in Los Angeles. He was always interested in motorcycles and he and Afton would meet with other young people interested in them at weekends.
“Afton and Charlie were married and after a tour of duty in the Navy, to learn to be a machinist, he began looking for work in machine shops, even though he’d never worked in one. He simply told people he could do the job and learnt it as he went along. When I began working for him, I asked him how he learnt so much. He told me: “If someone else could do it, then I figured I could do it too!”
At that time clutches and control cables on motorcycles were components which would frequently fail, the quality not being as good as it is today. Charlie realized this, and with access to some machine equipment in the garage of the house he was renting, he began making replacements for his own bike and the bikes of friends.
“The very first part, cable clamp #37, remains in production today. Like so many motorcycle start-up businesses, word spread, and work took off.”
Mike recounts that Charlie’s early years trying to scratch a living in the motorcycle business were tough. “Colleen told me how her Dad would close the business for a family vacation and hit the road with her and her Mom and call on dealers”.
Mike recollects that his own start in the motorcycle business was almost equally as accidental as Charlie’s. “When I first met Colleen, I didn’t know of the business’s existence. I only learnt about it in 1966 when the clutch failed on my 150 cc Honda while I was dating her, and she took me to the shop to get me a replacement.”
Two years later, after marrying Colleen, Mike had joined the business, but he didn’t get any preferential treatment. He started in the shipping department packing orders, and then driving an old El Camino full of parcels to the local post office every evening to dispatch them.
In 1974 Charlie suffered a serious stroke and Colleen and Mike took over the day-to-day running of the business, before taking over ownership in 1993.
Although Mike was a keen rider and knew his way around a motorcycle well enough to do most of his own repairs, when it came to taking over running the business, he hadn’t had much formal machine shop experience before, so went to evening classes at Los Angeles Trade Tech College, to better understand the processes involved in manufacturing custom cables and replacement clutches, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Fast forward to today and Barnett Tool & Engineering sells to some 39 countries through a variety of domestic and international distributors/dealers and offers a product line of some 3,000 part numbers in total. Congratulations to Colleen, Mike, their family and everyone else at Barnett Tool & Engineering that make it one of the market’s original and still leading businesses.

Delkron
Cometic Sells Delkron Program to Solenberg Performance
Shelbyville, Indiana based Solenberg Performance has bought the Delkron manufacturing program from Cometic Gasket.
The company says that it is “focused on providing high-quality service and customer satisfaction” and that it will do “everything we can to meet or exceed the market’s expectations.
“We have a full in-house machine shop, and Solenberg is the home of the Solenberg Racing 124 TC engine and, now, of the Delkron brand. The Solenberg Racing engine line comes from years of research. We use only top-quality parts. Our engines are some of the best on the street and strip. They are built 100% in-house for quality assurance.”
The name Solenberg has been in Harley performance for over 55 years. From racing stock bikes on the street to nitro funny bikes on the strip, they have long been one of the trusted and established ‘go-to’ names in the Midwest performance community.
Noted for their Twin Cam flywheels and stock rebuilds right through to 131 cubic inchers that put out over 160 ft lb torque, Solenberg says: “There are a lot of people out there that rebuild them, but we are one of the few that do it right. A lot of them use cheap Chinese made parts. Not at Solenberg - it's all genuine U.S.A. made components all the way and will be the same with the Delkron program.
“One of the legendary Delkron designs we’ll be building is the 135 ft lb torque 120 cubic incher, but as the only source for Delkron products, we’ll also be offering cases, TC cylinders up to 4.250", heads, complete engines, and so much more. Full list of parts to come.”

Pastrana to channel Evel Knievel
Nitro Circus and Indian Motorcycle have announced that Travis Pastrana will be jumping an Indian Scout FTR750 “when he looks to pay tribute to Evel Knievel, the founding father of motorcycle stunts, and surpass America’s most iconic daredevil.”
“Evel Live”, an unprecedented three hour live event in partnership with Nitro Circus on July 8, will see Travis Pastrana attempt three of Knievel’s most famed jumps - on an Indian Scout FTR750. The stunts will include jumping the length of 52+ crushed cars, 16 Greyhound busses, and the ill-fated Caesars Palace fountain jump that left Knievel grasping for his life with 40 broken bones.
If successful, Pastrana will be the first individual to complete all three jumps in one three-hour timespan and on a motorcycle similar to those Evel used.
“It is extremely important to use a motorcycle similar to the ones Evel jumped. The Indian Scout FTR750 is just that, a modern-day evolution of the flat track motorcycles of the past,” said Pastrana. “It has the power I need and handles well, but I’m only going to have a few days to get comfortable on it, not to mention I’ve never jumped a V-twin before. I’ve got my work cut out, but we’re used to going big at Nitro Circus, so we’ll make it happen.”
“We couldn’t be more excited for Travis to be piloting the Scout FTR750 as he looks to make history by recreating three of Evel Knievel’s most historic jumps - in a single evening,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director, Marketing and Product Development for Indian Motorcycle.
“Evel Knievel is truly a global icon, and we’re proud to be a part of this incredible event that pays homage to his legacy in such grand fashion.”

Kuryakyn
Hypercharger ES for 2018 Softails
Last year saw Somerset, Wisconsin based Kuryakyn launch a major update for its famous Hypercharger - now it has announced the awaited 2018 M-8 engined Softail application.
The iconic air cleaner has a 30-year pedigree and the ES version is a step change. It preserves the signature hot rod blower styling but “represents substantial updates in design, technology and performance,” according to the company.
“The state-of-the-art electronic throttle response butterflies eliminate vacuum-triggered fluttering. An integrated servo motor syncs with the coil to actuate and open the butterflies for smooth, precise movement with every twist of the throttle.
“Air delivery is maximized through the Kuryakyn designed high-flow K&N filter, featuring a larger surface area compared to the original Hypercharger. The larger filter element offers approximately 10% more airflow, improved CFM rating, and utilizes a unique end cap with internal stinger design that directs concentrated airflow into the throttle body.
Kuryakyn says that independent dyno testing performed by St. Croix Harley-Davidson (New Richmond, Wisconsin) resulted in added horsepower and more than six additional ft. lbs. of torque throughout the power band on a stock 114 ci Milwaukee-Eight Heritage Softail. Previous dyno testing performed on a stock 107 ci Milwaukee-Eight Street Glide by Those Dyno Guys (Zimmerman, Minn.) produced an 8.5 percent increase in horsepower and 3 percent more torque.
The die-cast A380 aluminum housing is offered in three finish options. The modular housing allows for easy customization with available classic faceplate kits (sold separately), featuring a fluted design that completely alters the style in minutes.
Additional fitments for Milwaukee-Eight Touring and Twin Cam Dyna, Softail and Touring models are already available, with Sportster applications expected soon.
The new gloss black Precision engine covers, also seen here, are described as taking the “blacked-out M-8 vibe even deeper into the dark side.”
Newly available in smooth gloss black, Precision covers “serve as an extension of the Milwaukee-Eight’s design language, enhancing the sinister look of Harley-Davidson ‘Special’ and CVO Touring models. The modern and muscular designs deliver a truly defined appearance for a seamless integration with every factory component, whether used individually or as a complete set, says Kuryakyn.
“Everything in the Precision line is bolt on, creating a uniform aesthetic with the motor. The collection includes groupings of unique covers and accents that bring the same powerful appearance to often overlooked areas of the engine and transmission. Focus areas include the cylinder base, inner primary, tappet block, transmission and starter, as well as the voltage regulator, oil cooler and coolant pump for liquid-cooled models, among others.”
Coming soon, full kits for 2018 Softail models will be offered in both gloss black and chrome finish options.

American Flat Track
Mees/Indian take Arizona Mile win to extend championship lead
American Flat Track Twins presented by Vance & Hines held its first Mile of the season on May 12, the Law Tigers Arizona Mile presented by Buddy Stubbs Harley-Davidson at Turf Paradise, with reigning Grand National Champion and 2018 Championship points leader Jared Mees taking the win on his No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing SDI Scout FTR750.
That victory was Mees’ 34th career AFT Twins victory and moved him out of a tie with Kenny Roberts for seventh all-time and into a tie for sixth with Bubba Shobert; it was his seventh Mile victory (four of which have come in the last year alone), moving him into a tie for 10th all-time in the discipline.
His Indian Wrecking Crewman Brad Baker (No. 6 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) took second, with Henry Wiles (No. 17 Wilco Racing/Willy Built/Bandit Industries Indian Scout FTR750) third, Briar Bauman (No. 14 Zanotti Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650) was fourth with works Harley-Davidson ace Brandon Robinson (No. 44 Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team XG750R) fifth.
Five races into the season and Mees has yet to be beaten in a straight fight. Even with a disqualification negating an apparent Atlanta Short Track victory, Mees left Phoenix with 100 points to his name, 25 up on second-ranked Wiles (75), with Bauman third at 72.
In the AFT Singles the win was taken by Kevin Stollings (No. 99 Roof Systems Honda CRF450R) over Dan Bromley (No. 62 KTM North America/Bromley Motorsports 450 SX-F), in the fifth different class winner of the 2018 Singles championship so far.
Brandon Price (No. 92 Parkinson Brothers Racing/DPC Racing Honda CRF450R) was third, Jesse Janisch (No. 132 Roof Systems/West Bend Harley-Davidson-backed Yamaha YZ450F) fourth with Cory Texter (No. 65 CTR/Law Tigers Honda CRF450R) fifth.
American Flat Track continues its month of Miles as the series attacks the second of four consecutive weeks of Mile racing for the AFT Twins contenders Saturday, May 19, at the Harley-Davidson Sacramento Mile presented by Cycle Gear in Sacramento, California, followed by the Springfield Mile I (May 27) and the Indian Motorcycle Red Mile presented by Indian Motorcycle of Lexington on June 2.

News Briefs
After 23 years Parts Unlimited decided to end its formal sponsorship support for AMA Supercross effective the end of the 2018 season. “It’s time for Parts Unlimited to take a different direction to Support the Sport,” reported Hylton Beattie, Global Motorsport Director of LeMans Corporation, parent company of Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties. The company will remain involved in Supercross through its team and rider sponsorships.
Days after the Parts Unlimited Supercross announcement, Boise, Idaho based distributor Western Powersports (WPS, owner of the fast growing HardDrive V-twin parts and accessory distribution program) revealed that it had stepped in to take over as the “official and exclusive Powersports parts and accessories distributor” of the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross series.
Indian conglomerate Mahindra signed an impressive 215 domestic U.S. dealers in just 4 months for the new ROXOR off-highway vehicle that they will be manufacturing at their new Auburn Hills, Michigan facility – headed up by Rick Haas as President and CEO, Mahindra Automotive North America – where, if all goes to plan, Mahindra will have revealed the ROXOR in early March.
Italian apparel major Dainese (owner of AGV helmets and itself 80 percent owned by Bharain’s Investcorp) has completed the redesign and re-location downtown of its Chicago flagstore. It re-opened in early March and in the hands of architect Renato Montagner is a minimalist “room within a room” homage to everything gorgeously Italian and Dainese, from its racing heritage to the latest iteration of its integrated D-Air race suit air bag technology.
In more Mahindra news, last year the company completed the acquisition of rights to the defunct JAWA and BSA motorcycle brands. The reports that new BSA models could be on sale in the United States as early as late 2018 are almost certainly overly optimistic, but stung by domestic Indian Rival Eicher Motors’ remarkable progress with their remarkable Royal Enfield 650s, they and other Indian manufacturers have an extra motivation where making a play on the northern hemisphere’s middleweight market is concerned (not least Triumph middleweight collaboration partner and 51 percent KTM/Husqvarna owner Bajaj Auto). Bring it on(RB)!
Parts Unlimited has added U.S. distribution of the popular and fast-growing U.K. based ‘Muc-Off’ three-stage “clean, protect lube” line of motorcycle detailing products.
After the demise of respected online news provider MotorcycleUSA four years ago, it looks like Motorcycle.com has now hit a bump in the road. Asphalt & Rubber reports that the services of kingpins Sean Alexander and Kevin Duke have been dispensed with recently.
Devin Battley has sold his Battley H-D/Battley Cycles (Ducati, BMW) dealership in Gaithersburg, Maryland, to Bayside H-D of Portsmouth, Virginia. It will be renamed District H-D. Battley founded Battley Cycles in Wheaton over 30 years ago and purchased Rockville H-D.
