AIMExpo

AIMExpo claims increased consumer attendance in final year at Orlando, Florida

Since this piece was written for the November edition of AMD Magazine, AIMExpo has released its final 2016 show communique and said that the fourth annual show, and the last to be held at Orlando, Florida, attracted “a record number of consumer attendees.

“North America’s premier powersports trade show welcomed a combined 18,399 total attendees over the course of the four-day expo, highlighted by 12,029 consumer enthusiasts [said to be +74 percent on 2015] who filled the aisles and booths of the 451 exhibiting companies and numerous show features over the weekend.”
Global and North American debuts from OEM participants included new models from Honda, KTM, Suzuki and Yamaha, combined with introductions from a wide array of gear and aftermarket companies.
They went on to say that “AIMExpo 2016 experienced the effects of Mother Nature just prior to the start of the event when Hurricane Matthew traveled up the southeastern coast of Florida, leaving destruction in its wake. While Central Florida was fortunate enough to avoid direct impact from the storm, many registered exhibitors, dealers, media and international visitors were adversely affected by Matthew and were unable to attend.
“Even with the weather-related challenges, 2,459 dealer attendees were recorded over the four days of AIMExpo 2016, representing 1,116 dealerships from 49 states and Puerto Rico. In addition to visits conducted during trade-only days, a large number of dealers visited the show over the weekend, including approximately 400 retailers picking up dealer/buyer credentials during the event’s consumer days.
“Attendance by dealers taking advantage of the complementary Powersports DEALER Seminars @ AIMExpo filled 1087 seats, earning critical and valuable knowledge on how to enhance the profitability and operation of their businesses from influencers representing the powersports industry, and beyond.
“AIMExpo’s global impact continued to resonate as well, with a total of 44 countries represented across all attendees. Counting international visitors and dealers/buyers, 6,370 trade attendees were on hand for B2B and I2I (Industry to Industry) business and networking during the four days of AIMExpo, including 3,029 exhibitor attendees and 630 industry personnel members. They were joined by 252 members of the media, who documented all the new model and product introductions for millions of enthusiasts around the world.
“Collectively, the 18,000-plus attendees at AIMExpo 2016 contributed to more than 32 million social media impressions via Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and YouTube. This growth of more than 10 million impressions year-to-year demonstrates AIMExpo attendees are more engaged than ever during their experience at the event, eagerly sharing their stories while interacting with other attendees and exhibitors.
“As the sun goes down on AIMExpo in Orlando, the stage is set for the industry’s highly anticipated move to Columbus, Ohio, next September. With its close proximity to the densest population of dealerships in the country, a state-of-the-art host facility at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, and a city center that welcomes and will become all things powersports, the desirable location in America’s heartland is poised to boost AIMExpo attendee numbers across the board during its landmark fifth year. With an average early-fall temperature of 65 degrees in the month of September, Columbus will be buzzing throughout the four-day celebration, scheduled for September 21-24, 2017.”

‘INTERMOT Customized’ nailed it!

The November edition of AMD Magazine – www.amdmag.com – has been entirely turned over to showcasing this year’s AMD World Championship, the INTERMOT Expo in Germany, and the successful launch of the all-new ‘INTERMOT Customized’ show-within-show concept.
The vision I always had for the AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Building was one of using it as an anchor for an event that could both preach to the choir and speak to new business opportunities. Yes, I have been on a mission – one based on the inevitability that boom would turn to bust; that attitudes to the custom motorcycle ownership and riding experience were outmoded, and that the references that informed the existing custom culture would be irrelevant to new generations of riders.
From my point of view, although the years I spent hosting the AMD World Championship at Sturgis were fun (mostly), and not without their rewards and opportunities to further the mission, ultimately we just could not find the staging solution we needed in the United States.
Maybe if the AIMExpo project had been underway at that stage, who knows, perhaps that would have therefore given us a platform to keep the AMD World Championship in the United States. I guess we have been paying the price for being a few years ahead of the curve in our thinking throughout this odyssey.
Our own Big Bike Europe Expo at Essen in Germany in 2013 showcased the mission splendidly – in terms of show design, venue atmospherics and (I remain proud to say) in terms of user-friendly organization, where competitors and exhibitors are the honoured guests.

“a ready-made audience”

Having created the formula in a European context at Essen, the decision to move the AMD World Championship to INTERMOT in 2014 was all about taking a decade out of the evolution of the attendance. In one giant leap forward we could expose the creativity of the custom market as expressed through the AMD World Championship to the largest custom bike show attendance the world had ever seen.
Boom…a ready-made audience of getting on for 200,000 expo-oriented, motivated, relevant and active high-mileage riders beckoned!
The move to INTERMOT in 2014 was all about starting to learn how to exploit that opportunity and getting the Championship bedded-in to a week-long cycle in a massive, multi-hall, third party owned expo complex in the middle of a major urban conurbation.
This year, however, well, what can I say! Kudos, respect and thanks to the team at Koelnmesse and for the backing of the IVM, the custom motorcycle shops and motorcycle manufacturers and vendors who took booths at ‘INTERMOT Customized’ and to the AMD World Championship competitor community.
This is their success and their opportunity – if we have been the catalyst, then great, that makes me proud. What has now been accomplished will prove to be exactly the kind of foundation that I was hoping to see emerge somewhere, somehow.
There can be no question that as the international custom industry continues to morph, ‘INTERMOT Customized’ will now prove to be a platform for its engineering to be showcased to a massive and massively influential mixed audience just at the time when the old channels, products and styles of bikes finally prove to be unable to sustain the industry it spawned.
What has been interesting in the European context in the past decade or so is that despite the downturn, the actual number of motorcycles registered for the road in Europe has not reduced proportionate to the slump in new model sales.
In 2007 the ‘Bike Park’ in Europe (EU plus Switzerland and Norway) was a total of 35m, 22m of which were motorcycles. That figure continued to rise through the most severe years of economic downturn, peaking at 37.7m total PTWs in 2011, 25.6m of which were motorcycles.
While that figure softened a little in the following years, motorcycles in use declined less quickly in percentage terms than overall PTW use, and the latest available data puts Europe at some 35.5m total PTWs, of which 25.7m are motorcycles.
This indicates that while there have been (and remain) issues in Europe concerning licensing age, access to the sport and training, in fact it isn’t that motorcycling as such has suffered a demographic collapse. Instead, as is the well documented case in Spain, the ‘Park’ (or fleet) has aged rather than reduced – which also goes to why renewal is being seen among the larger displacement machines rather than at entry-level price points.
Something that has changed in Europe though is the regulatory attitude to riding. Whereas a decade ago the concern was that it was policy to make riding as difficult as possible, fast forward to 2016 and the regulators themselves can’t state their personal riding credentials fast enough.
PTWs are now officially endorsed at EU level as a part of the solution to environmental and safety issues, not part of the problem - with all transport and related laws having to pass a motorcycle sanity test.
Even the right to modify is now enshrined in EU law with competency for all regulatory issues, except for those that affect safety and emissions now firmly protected from EU level interference and handed back to national governments.
With motorcycle sales in general growing again now in Europe (see the INTERMOT report elsewhere in this edition), and with large displacement machines leading that growth, and custom styling leading the growth that the manufacturers are enjoying, all current trends point to an international custom motorcycle industry with opportunity stamped all over it.
Now if someone could just light a similar fire under the domestic U.S. market … Columbus anybody?

Polaris

Polaris say Q3 2016 Victory and Indian unit sales up by “high single digits percent” in a down market

Polaris Industries say that North American consumer retail demand for Victory and Indian models increased high single digits percent during the 2016 third quarter, with Indian Motorcycle and Victory increasing low-teens percent combined, while overall motorcycle industry retail sales 900cc and above were down high single digits percent in the 2016 third quarter.

Product availability for all three motorcycle brands remained “adequate” throughout the quarter with both the Company’s Spirit Lake, Iowa motorcycle plant and the new Slingshot production line in Huntsville, Alabama, producing at retail demand levels.
However, the company reported third Motorcycle segment sales revenues, including its respective PG&A sales, down by -3 percent in the 2016 third quarter to $183.2 million. Victory and Indian Motorcycle reported increased vehicle sales revenue growth, while Slingshot sales revenue was down during the quarter due to shipment timing.
Gross profit in the Motorcycle segment decreased by -26 percent to $21.2 million, or 11.6 percent of sales in the third quarter of 2016, compared to $28.4 million, or 15.1 percent of sales, in the third quarter of 2015 – apparently due to higher warranty expense related to recent safety and service bulletins, primarily for Slingshot.

“Our third quarter results, while discouraging, were in line with our revised guidance and reflect our ongoing execution of the RZR recalls and significant quality and safety improvement initiatives,” said Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
“In addition to these recall challenges, we continued to face a weak overall powersports industry, but were encouraged by continued retail strength for Indian and our overall motorcycle business, and the return to growth for side-by-sides in September,” he commented.
“We remain committed to improving our fundamentals and executing our long-term strategy to be the ‘Best in Powersports, Plus’. Our recent announcement to acquire Transamerican Auto Parts, a $740 million, vertically integrated, multi-channel leader in the $10+ billion Jeep and truck aftermarket accessory space, is consistent with our strategy and exciting due to its growth potential. “We are making the necessary investments, both internally and externally, to realize the true potential of our organization. Along with improvements in product safety and quality, we are using Huntsville and our go to market Retail Flow Management (“RFM”) process to establish Lean as a competitive advantage, we are bringing technology to the forefront of our industry with ‘Ride Command’, and we are working to transform the customer experience, from purchase to service, to enhance profitability.
“This commitment to improving our execution and our overall performance will drive a steadier cadence of growth and profitability in the future.”
Third quarter net income was $32.3 million, or $0.50 per diluted share, for the quarter ended September 30, 2016 compared to $155.2 million, or $2.30 per diluted share reported in the third quarter of 2015.
Sales for the third quarter of 2016 totaled $1,185.1 million, down -19 percent from last year’s third quarter sales of $1,456.0 million.
Compared to the $535.699 m in motorcycle segment sales revenue reported for the first nine months of the 2015 financial year, motorcycle segment sales revenues are reported up by +13 percent for the first nine months of 2016 at $602.762 m.
Total Polaris sales revenues were down by -19 percent at $ 1,185.067m for the third quarter (compared to $ 1,456.000m for the year ago quarter) and -19 percent at $ 3,298.840m for the first nine months of 2016 (compared with $ 3,613.672m for the first nine months of 2015.
Total gross profit across Polaris’ full range of activities was -37 percent for the third quarter at $ 260.770m (22 percent of sales) compared to $ 415.623 for the year ago quarter (28.5 percent of sales); and was -23 percent for the first nine months of 2016 at $ 792.851m (24 percent of sales) compared to$ 1,028.768m for the year ago period (28.5 percent of sales).
Off-Road Vehicle (“ORV”) and Snowmobile segment sales revenue, including its respective PG&A sales, decreased -23 percent from the third quarter of 2015 to $923.4 million.
Polaris’ “Global Adjacent Markets” segment sales along with its respective PG&A sales, increased six percent to $78.5 million in the 2016 third quarter compared to the 2015 third quarter.
Parts, Garments and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales, which are included in each of the three respective reporting segments, declined one percent during the 2016 third quarter to $224.4 million, driven by lower retail sales.
International sales to customers outside of North America totaled $141.0 million for the third quarter of 2016, including PG&A, a decrease of eight percent from the same period in 2015. International sales on a constant currency basis were down seven percent in the 2016 third quarter.
Operating expenses increased 16 percent to $222.6 million, or 18.8 percent of sales, for the third quarter of 2016, compared to $192.0 million, or 13.2 percent of sales, for the third quarter of 2015.
Net cash provided by operating activities was $426.2 million for the nine months ended September 30, 2016, compared to $464.0 million for the same period in 2015. Total debt for the quarter was $436.7 million. The Company’s debt-to-total capital ratio was 32 percent at September 30, 2016, compared to 25 percent a year ago. Cash and cash equivalents were $122.7 million at September 30, 2016, down from $225.3 million for the same period in 2015.
During the third quarter 2016, the Company repurchased and retired 111,000 shares of its common stock for $10.5 million. As of September 30, 2016, the Company currently has authorization from its Board of Directors to repurchase up to an additional 8.6 million shares of Polaris stock.
For the full year 2016, the Company says its Motorcycle segment unit sales are forecast to be up low-single digits percent.

K&N Engineering

K&N Big Twin Aircharger for bolt-on power gains

K&N Engineering has launched new, simple bolt-on Aircharger intake system kits for all 2008-2016 Touring models and 2001-2015 Dynas and Softails.
Said to add up to 6hp, both kits include a cast aluminum intake tube and come in a textured black finish with a raised, brushed aluminum K&N logo. “This styling exudes performance, while also providing a timeless design that would look good on any style of bike build,” says K&N’s Maxwell Matthewson.

They feature an oversized, oiled cotton, clamp-on air filter that feeds air directly into a wide air tube with an integrated velocity stack. An integrated breather system ensures these kits are a direct replacement for the stock intake.
“Guaranteeing power is something that K&N is known for, and these kits are no different. On our dyno, we saw an estimated 6 horsepower and 6.5 lb-ft of torque gain on a 2016 H-D Street Glide, and we have added an estimated 5 horsepower and 8 lb-ft of torque to a 2016 Harley Switchback we tested on,” Matthewson went on to say.

“These power numbers are achieved using technology that we pioneered on our car and truck intake systems. Now, using cast aluminum, we are able to precisely direct the airflow to limit restrictions and promote smooth, laminar flow and increase airflow velocity on Harleys too.
“These performance gains were achieved on a stock motorcycle. The intake system will lend itself to further power gains on heavily modified Harleys. The kit offers a very high-volume, high-velocity intake with low restrictions - the more modifications made to the motorcycle, the more these kits will perform.”

Saddlemen

Saddlemen LS Road Sofa

Founded in 1987, Rancho Dominguez, California based manufacturer Saddlemen say their Road Sofa LS for 1997 through current Harley-Davidson touring bikes “was created for a single purpose: to have a luxurious saddle for comfortable, long distance touring without compromising styling.”

The company says that, like all their seats, LS Road Sofa was engineered with “industry leading Gel-Core construction for unsurpassed comfort.” Gel-Core is engineered to dampen, divert and deflect energy to create a smooth, therapeutic ride. At the heart of this technology is specially formulated viscoelastic polymer known as SaddleGel, which when combined with the latest in co-molding technology, reduces engine vibration by up to 50 percent, and direct impact forces by up to 92 percent.

“Painstakingly crafted seating contours cradle the rider for proper alignment with pegs, bars, controls and reduce strain and fatigue. Perforated leather seating panels are breathable for continuous ventilation, and compliant enhancement of the SaddleGel and Comfort Foam properties used below the cover. These saddles fit and feel right.”
Features include a tall lumbar support with a wide driver saddle that supports the back and legs, while a streamlined nose improves the rider's reach to the ground. A refined split-cushion design separates the seating surface from the lumbar support, reducing tailbone and back pressure from maximum long-range comfort. The 15.5” wide driver bucket is matched with a 13” passenger perch.
Ventilated soft seating leather provides breathable comfort and unsurpassed looks, and it comes with a fitted rain cover specially designed to protect the seat from harsh elements. The optional OEM compatible driver’s backrest has independent adjustments for fore-aft position, height and angle, and folds forward (sold separately - will not fit on 2009-2015 Harley-Davidson Trike models).

Kuryakyn

Extended brake pedals and AirMaster graphic windshields

Kuryakyn’s extended brake pedals for Harley tourers and trikes are designed to free up floorboard space and relocate the pad location to a more natural position for improved operation.

Extended brake pedals for models without fairing lowers are noticeably longer than stock and place the pad area lower and at a flatter angle. For models with fairing lowers they are essentially the same length as stock to avoid interference, but the pad location has been lowered and the angle flattened for more natural positioning. The pad area’s new position keeps the rider’s foot out from under the pedal, improving comfort and pivoting for easy engagement that maintains clearance with the floorboards.
Made from quality steel, they are available in chrome or gloss black finishes; construction includes bronze pivot bushings with grease fitting to ensure smooth operation and long life. They accept the stock brake pedal pad, as well as any aftermarket pad designed for the factory pedal on ‘14-’16 Electra Glides, Road Glides, Road Kings, Street Glides and Trikes.
Also seen here, these new USA made AirMaster graphic windshields from Kuryakyn are said to “diminish wind buffeting” on Harley and Victory baggers.

Custom-formed from premium hard-coated polycarbonate that will not crack or shatter upon impact (unlike acrylic), themed graphics are screen-printed behind a light smoke material using proprietary inks, making the images extremely durable and sharp.
They are available 7” tall for Harley-Davidson batwing fairings (‘96 –’16 Electra Glides, Street Glides and Tri Glides) and 10” tall an enlarged center scoop to enhance the fairing’s sharp lines and reduce turbulent airflow on ‘10-’16 Victory Cross Country, Cross Country Tour and Magnum models.

INTERMOT Customized

‘INTERMOT Customized’ sets new benchmark for custom industry presentation

‘INTERMOT Customized’, the all-new ‘show-within-show’ concept unveiled to the riding public at the INTERMOT Expo at Cologne, Germany, October 6th 2016, is being widely acclaimed as a major breakthrough for the way the custom motorcycle industry is presented to the wider riding public and potential new consumers.

With the AMD World Championship center stage as the primary feature in the Cologne Exhibition Center’s atmospheric Hall 10, more than 100 custom market exhibitors drove an increase of some 17 percent in overall exhibitor numbers as INTERMOT saw record visitor numbers and over 40 new motorcycle model launches from the world’s leading motorcycle manufacturers.
Now permanently hosted as the anchor event at ‘INTERMOT Customized’, the 12th AMD World Championship featured 82 bikes in total this year, entered by 67 builders from 23 countries, with the win taken by ‘Rumble Racer’ by Suicide Customs – the third time a Japanese customizer has scooped the coveted World Championship winner’s gold and diamond ring.
The debut of ‘INTERMOT Customized’ featured over 100 exhibitors and has been widely praised by exhibitors, custom bike builders, dealers and visitors alike as delivering an inspirational and aspirational show environment that is set to champion the professionalism of the international custom market for years to come.

In addition to the AMD World Championship bikes, the 220,000 plus high-mileage riders and industry professionals who visited INTERMOT this year (some 80 percent plus of whom are estimated to have visited ‘INTERMOT Customized’) saw presentations of custom excellence from a wide range of exhibitors that included several of the leading OEMs – including Harley-Davidson, BMW, Triumph, Yamaha and Kawasaki, all of which took additional INTERMOT booths specifically to showcase their custom buying option credentials; plus Ural from Russia and German V-8 specialist Boss Hoss.

Additional ‘INTERMOT Customized’ features included displays from the OEM/aftermarket-backed 1/8 mile Essenza Spirit of Custom and Sultans of Sprint custom bike race series, a Garage Area featuring live customizing, technical and workshop displays, photography by legendary motorcycle industry lensman Michael Lichter, and history and memorabilia from the Ace Cafe, London.
Leading parts and accessory distributers included Motorcycle Storehouse and Custom Chrome Europe, with the Warren Buffet owned German distributor and retailer Detlev Louis debuting their custom industry program.
Several “mainstream” parts and accessory vendors followed the lead set by the OEMs by taking an additional booth in INTERMOT Customized – well-known names such as LSL, Nolan Helmets and leading German luggage specialist SW-MOTECH, who showed their new ‘Legend’ line.

Parts and accessories specialists at ‘INTERMOT Customized’ included Daytona Twin Tec and Cometic Gaskets from the United States, exhaust manufacturers such as Dr Jekill and Mr Hyde (German) and BSL (Austria), performance specialist Norbert Buesch (Germany) and apparel brands such as OMD (helmets), John Doe (protective casual riding gear), Restless and Rusty Pistons.
European custom shops and custom bike builders stepped up their booth presence, with ‘INTERMOT Customized’ featuring the likes of Fred Kodlin, Ruff Cycles, Mellow Motorcycles, Dr Mechanik, WalzWerk, Independent Choppers, Big Boys Cycles, HBS, Hells Kitchen old school parts and Holger Schnell’s No Limit Custom from Germany, joined by Midland Choppers from Switzerland.
Tracing its origins in Cologne back to 1964, INTERMOT is staged every two years. INTERMOT 2016 attracted an increased attendance of some 220,000 visitors from 95 different countries, and saw over 40 worldwide new motorcycle model premiers from the world’s leading motorcycle manufacturers. Over 1,330 exhibiting companies (17 percent up from 2014) from 40 different countries occupied some 70,000 sq m of exhibit space.
In its opening press conference, show owner IVM, the German motorcycle industry trade association, cited ‘INTERMOT Customized’ as the primary driver of the increase in exhibitor numbers.
In total the show occupied 129,000 sq m (nearly 1.4m sq ft) of gross space in 6 state-of-the-art exhibition halls and an additional 70,000 sq m (approx. 750,000 sq ft) of external activity and feature space that included over 15,000 test rides being taken on Scooters and e-bikes. INTERMOT is also host to ‘e-Motion’, another show-within-show concept for the fast growing international Urban Mobility and e-bike market.
The 13th AMD World Championship will be staged at ‘INTERMOT Customized’ during INTERMOT 2018 at the Cologne Exhibition Center (Koelnmesse) from Wednesday October 3rd and conclude with the awards ceremony at 16:00 hrs CET Sunday 7th 2018. AMD World Championship set-up day will be Monday October 1st, with Press Day on Tuesday October 2nd.

If the bike is still equipped with the early stock 6V charging system, this will have to be converted to 12V, which means a suitable generator, coil and lamps need to be fitted. Detailed, step-by-step instructions are included; the kit is intended for the use with primary chain drive.
W&W recommends the use of Antigravity 12-cell or 16-cell batteries – “these have enough power and perfectly fit the provided tray and clamp. The kit fits Knucklehead and Panhead Big Twins 1936 - 1957.

Hydraulic Springer brake
This Cannonball hydraulic version of the factory Springer fork brake is said to deliver better stopping power than the Duplex brake on 1936-1948 Big Twins, 1941-1957 Servi Cars and WLCs with 12mm master cylinders.
Behind the stock looking backing plate hides a master cylinder which activates the brake shoes and significantly improves the brake’s performance. The kit includes a complete, pre-installed backing plate and a new brake drum. Handlebar brake controls, brake line and fittings available separately.

Bates ‘Kill Bill’ battery switches
Terminal and thumb screw assembly which can be mounted on any suitable place on the motorcycle. It connects the battery’s ground (negative) terminal and cable with the frame. After installation you have two options: use the ‘Kill Bill’ switch like an ignition switch - half a turn out and the current is interrupted; or use it as protection from manipulation and theft by removing the thumb screw to disconnect the battery from the electrical system.

Bates MAG-12 Narrow Glide wheels
The Cannonball MAG-12 cast aluminum wheel selection was expanded recently by the addition of 2.5 x 19” versions with hubs for FX and Sportster Narrow Glide forks. For the complete selection with all details visit wwag.com.

Bates trim for Bendix style oval air cleaner
This contrasted billet aluminum insert with dull black machined finish will add some 1970s classic factory style to aftermarket flat surface Bendix style oval air cleaners - it mounts with the two cover screws.

Linkert venturis
Aluminum reproductions of the original Linkert venturis (as used in M-series carburetors) by Colony - also available in oversizes for worn carburetor bodies. A good venturi fit is essential for proper performance of Linkert carbs.

‘Good Guys 2’ air cleaner backing plate and cover kits
These black anodized backing plate kits are designed for Rick’s Motorcycles’ ‘Good Guys 2’ air cleaner front covers, comprising a billet aluminum backing plate, K&N filter element, engine breather fittings and all necessary small parts for installation. Fitments include Softail 2000-2015, Dyna 1999 and up, 2001-20016 Tourers, EFi Sportsters 2007 and up. The billet aluminum machined design covers also seen here can be combined with the respective ‘Good Guys 2’ backing plate and breather system. Meticulously machined from billet aluminum.

Harley-Davidson

Harley unit sales off by -7.1 percent in U.S. in third quarter, international sales up again

Harley-Davidson are reporting that worldwide retail motorcycle sales in the third quarter were down -4.5 percent, primarily on weak U.S. industry trends. Harley-Davidson retail motorcycle sales in the U.S. were down -7.1 percent compared to the year-ago quarter, with the overall domestic U.S. motorcycle industry also down for the same period.
Harley-Davidson’s U.S. market share for the quarter was 52.3 percent in the 601cc-plus segment, “essentially flat” compared to the third quarter in 2015.

Harley-Davidson international retail sales increased by +1.0 percent over the prior year quarter.
“We continue to effectively navigate a fiercely competitive environment and an ongoing weak U.S. industry,” said Matt Levatich, president and chief executive officer. “We are pleased with the positive results and the enthusiasm we’ve seen for our Model Year 2017 motorcycles, featuring the new Milwaukee-Eight engine. We are confident that the entire line-up will drive retail sales growth for the remainder of 2016 and position us well heading into the spring riding season next year.”
Response to the new model year motorcycles is said to have driven increased retail sales in September over the prior year.
Recognizing the continued slower industry growth in the U.S., the company says it will “streamline” its operations in the fourth quarter of 2016. It expects to incur expenses of approximately $20 million to $25 million in the fourth quarter, primarily for employee separation and reorganization costs.
“Our value as a company and as a brand is the sum of 113 years of commitment to our riders and the freedom seekers we will inspire to ride in the future,” said Levatich. “We remain intensely focused on growing the sport and delivering strong business results.”
Retail sales in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa region) were up +1.9 percent in the third quarter and up +6.6 percent for the first nine months. Asia Pacific retail sales were up +1.7 percent in the quarter and up +2.9 percent for the first nine months compared to 2015, behind strong growth in Australia and Japan.
Revenue from motorcycles and related products was down compared to the third quarter in 2015, primarily behind decreased motorcycle shipments. Operating margin as a percent of revenue decreased versus the prior year.
Operating income from financial services was down -4.6 percent in the third quarter compared to the year ago period.
Harley-Davidson continues to expect to ship 264,000 to 269,000 motorcycles in 2016, which is approximately down -1 percent to up +1 percent from 2015. In the fourth quarter of 2016, the company expects to ship 44,200 to 49,200 motorcycles compared to 48,149 motorcycles shipped in the year-ago period.
The company continues to expect full-year 2016 operating margin of approximately 15 to 16 percent for the Motorcycles segment. The company continues to expect 2016 capital expenditures for Harley-Davidson, Inc. of $255 million to $275 million.
Third quarter 2016 diluted earnings per share decreased 7.2 percent to $0.64 compared to diluted EPS of $0.69 in the same period in 2015. Net income was $114.1 million on consolidated revenue of $1.27 billion compared to net income of $140.3 million on consolidated revenue of $1.32 billion in the third quarter of 2015.
Through nine months, Harley-Davidson 2016 net income was $645.0 million on consolidated revenue of $4.89 billion compared to nine-month 2015 net income of $710.0 million on consolidated revenue of $4.81 billion. Diluted EPS was $3.55 compared to diluted EPS of $3.41 in the year-ago period. Worldwide retail motorcycle sales were down 1.9 percent compared to the same period in 2015. International retail sales were up +3.3 percent, offset by a decline of -4.7 percent in U.S. retail sales.
In the third quarter, the company paid a cash dividend of $0.35 per share. During the same time-period, on a discretionary basis, the company repurchased 2.1 million shares of Harley-Davidson common stock for $104.6 million.
Also in the third quarter, there were approximately 179.3 million weighted-average diluted shares outstanding, compared to approximately 204.6 million shares in the year-ago quarter. As of September 25, 2016, a total of 20.9 million shares remained on board-approved share repurchase authorizations.

Lowbrow Customs

Factory racer inspired gas tanks

Brunswick, Ohio based Lowbrow Customs is offering these new bolt-on ‘WX’ bobber gas tanks for Harley-Davidson and custom applications. Inspired by factory race bikes of the 1940's, this cut-down, classic style can be appropriated for Knucklehead, Panhead and Shovelhead motorcycles.

Directly influenced by the Harley-Davidson WR, an innovative design that allows them to fit almost a half century's worth of motorcycles. In 1946 Harley-Davidson introduced the WR factory racer, a 45 cubic inch Flathead designed to dominate the flat tracks and road courses in America. The narrowed tanks were part of the slim profile and 'all-business' form that follows function when it comes to a fast and nimble motorcycle.

The beauty and simplicity of Lowbrow Customs' ‘WX’ gas tanks is that with the included, innovative rear mount they will bolt right up to a stock Harley-Davidson Big Twin frame from 1936 - 1984. “Get a custom, narrowed look with a tight gap between the tanks and no fabrication required. These are the perfect tanks for a custom Shovelhead or Panhead chopper, bobber or custom motorcycle.”
They have 2.25 gallon capacity and feature both a vent and fuel crossover, accept a 22mm fuel petcock and standard cam-style Harley-Davidson gas caps. The Panhead pictured has been built by The Gasbox of Cleveland, Ohio (www.thegasbox.com).

ASA Electronics

Larger than life sound requires larger speakers

Elkhart, Indiana based ASA Electronics has introduced an updated new plug n’ play Harley-Davidson replacement audio system.

After excellent reviews and sales of their HD1BT525 Harley-Davidson replacement stereo package, ASA say they have “upped their game” by adding over an inch of “booming sound” with all-new 6.5” speakers. Their new HD1BT650 Jensen Power Sports audio kit still features “the true plug n’ play design that customers loved about the old package, allowing for both the stereo and speakers to fit into the factory fairings opening with ease.
“A 5.25 inch speaker can only reproduce so much bass, you need more cone area to produce more bass. The larger 6.5 inch speaker allows us to provide deeper sound, and the included adaptor rings make it possible to shoehorn in a 6.5 inch speaker into a fairing originally designed to handle a 5.25 inch speaker,” Fred Roetker, ASA Electronics’ HD Industry Manager explained.
He went on to say that combining those speakers with “the already incredible HD1BT stereo, which features Bluetooth, Sirius XM capabilities and a USB port, you get one awesome package of in-your-face beauty. It doesn’t only sound excellent, but it is aesthetically built to look great installed in a Harley.”
ASA Electronics has been designing and manufacturing mobile electronic products for the powersports industry since 1977; Jensen is one of their best known proprietary brands.
