Havoc Motorcycles and Wild West Motor Company

Havoc Motorcycles and Wild West Motor Company announce partnership

Having acquired Apollo Choppers two years ago, Wild West Motor Company CEO Jim Winn has struck a co-marketing and joint distribution partnership with Havoc Motorcycles of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

The objective of the alliance is to "extend the reach of both brands across North America. The vision of both companies is the same," said Winn of the Buckner, Kentucky based company.
"We both build extremely powerful exotic motorcycles by hand with the highest quality components, with no compromise in style, beauty or attention to detail. It's about working together to bring our passion for building them to riders whose passion is riding them."

"The models are complementary," said Dr Jarrod Wiener, President of Havoc Motorcycles. "Wild West manufactures the "Gunfire," an exotic pro-street based on a drag bike frame, and the "Dragoon" chopper-style motorcycle. Havoc's models are custom baggers. By working together we can offer dealerships a variety of styles under the same assurance of quality."
Havoc's models include three stretched baggers - the "Wildcat," "Slayer," and the flagship "Iron Flight: Mike Tyson Special Edition," built under license from the iconic boxer and entertainer.
Under the agreement, the Wild West models will be added to the Havoc catalog, and the Havoc models will be added to the Wild West line-up for co-marketing and shared distribution. "We're bringing independent motorcycle dealers an expanded range, a simple ordering process and streamlined logistics under a single commitment to excellence," said Winn.

Bad Dad

Turn-Down slip-ons for hard bags

Fort Wayne, Indiana based bagger custom parts and conversion specialist Bad Dad's new Turn-Down exhaust is said to be "the cleanest exhaust set-up for any stretched saddlebag project, with no rear exhaust exits."

These slip-on mufflers allow the exhaust to exit underneath the saddlebag. Featuring a built-in baffle to create a "great classic sound", they fit any 1995-current Touring model with a dual head pipe, which makes this is a great exhaust set-up for any custom bagger project.

Meanwhile, as an alternate approach, Bad Dad's Long Strokes exhaust pipes are designed specifically for stretched bags. Angle-cut and elongated to show the perfect amount of chrome from the back of stretched bags, the chrome slip-on mufflers fit 1995 to current year Touring models and are described as having "a deep idle with moderate exhaust note that won’t upset the neighbors, but will sound as good as your custom bagger looks."
Also seen here is a complete speaker lid kit for upgrading Road King or Softail hard saddlebags. The company says this kit puts high-powered speakers directly into the hard bags and allows easy access to music through the system’s Bluetooth controller.
The complete kit includes speaker lids, grilles, 200+ Watt speakers, 400-Watt amp, wiring harness, Bluetooth controller, and all mounting hardware and seals. Available with or without LED taillights, flush-mounted into the speaker lid’s custom bodyline.

AIM Corp

A&S clutch upgrades

Huntington Beach, California based clutch specialist AIM Corp has introduced upgrades for the Harley-Davidson A&S (Assist and Slip) 3-stud style clutch.

Their new VP-SDR is said to be the first sliding lock-up system in the industry and features a new sliding weight design. The centrifugal force of the sliding weights will create 105 lbs extra clamping pressure at 4000 rpm, creating up to 40% more clamping force and 120-130 lbs extra clamping pressure at high rpms.
It makes an easier clutch pull option available - up to 30% lighter during low rpms - that handles over 105 ft-lbs of torque with AIM's softer orange springs installed, and for a street performance option it handles 120 ft-lbs torque with the OEM 2013 and up CVO springs.
However, with AIM's new replacement performance clutch coil spring kit for 2013 and later Harley 3-stud style A&S clutches, it handles up to 155 ft-lbs torque; the performance coil springs are rated at being able to handle 360 lbs of pressure and said to be 35 percent stronger than the stock springs.
The slider weights are designed to fit behind stock 103” and 110" derby covers and easily installed, in just 10 minutes or so, through the derby cover without needing to remove the primary cover - no modifications are needed.
The kit contains the VP-SDR Lock Up Head and mounting hardware; performance clutch coil spring kit available separately. It fits '13 and later CVO 110 inch models, '13 and later Tri-Glides and Free Wheelers, '15 and later Ultra Limited Low and Electra Glide Classic Low models, and '15 and later 110 inch Softails.

Victory

Victory 'Octane'

Robin Bradley takes a strategic look at what the new Victory 'Octane' could mean for the aftermarket and for Milwaukee

It is less than a week since the new Victory Octane was finally unveiled online, and already word has spread far and wide.

All the industry blogs have carried it, though mostly just by repeating the basic information released by the company at the time - so we won't be doing that here, because this is a platform about which so much more can be said, strategically and technically.
The aftermarket as we know it can no longer depend solely on Harley's XLs and Big Twins. With peak-bagger having been passed and uncertainty surrounding the future strength of demand for Harley's core offerings, the advent of the "New Indians" have already represented a much needed shot-in-the-arm for aftermarket prospects - as well as an unwelcome, though surely predictable, shot-across-the-bows for Milwaukee.
With the Octane, Polaris has done it again - but on steroids.

From an aftermarket perspective the platform is a gift that will just keep giving. While it would be impossible to speculate at this stage about just how high the production numbers will climb (they don't need to be huge for the bike to be nonetheless hugely significant), the one thing that we can be sure of is that at the kind of retail price point it has been introduced, the scope for aftermarket opportunity will be immense.
What is more, we are not talking (only) bolt-on here. The Scouts and the Chiefs are all begging to be dressed and re-visualised, but the Octane is begging to be engineered and retuned.
For a start, it is a raging certainty that it won't be long before that front end gets beefed up (48mm upside downies?) and the rear suspension gets piggy-backs. It is crying out for lightweight wheels, sports brakes, replacement pipes, titanium valve-train, fuel-injection tuning, new bars, instruments and controls - to say nothing of an improved seat (something from the Le Pera studio perhaps?).
Victory's launch info already details a stage one replacement exhaust, piggy back shocks, drag bars and a tach with shift light, so they are clearly aware of the machine's destiny at the hands of the market's tuners, and I can't wait to see what the likes of Brock's Performance, 'T-Man' Riser, Dan Fitzmaurice, Hoban Brothers, Scott Sjovall and so many others are able to make of it.
Victory in particular, and Polaris in general, have a much more enlightened attitude to seeing the aftermarket as a potential partner rather than as their enemy. They have an established modus operandi that has not only seen them buying third party candidates for the PG&A programs, but also sees them working with aftermarket vendors on an independent basis. They understand that doing so, making it worthwhile for other vendors to market their products, is an opportunity for brand profile development - in stark contrast to Harley's always inappropriately short-sighted and insular track record in such matters.

The whole point about the concept teaser campaign, about working with the likes of Urs Erbacher and Zach Ness, was to demonstrate the versatility of what was about to be unveiled, and that the company understands that it doesn't hold a monopoly on design and engineering intelligence, creativity and experience.
This is clearly a platform that is going to exploit the market opportunity that Harley-Davidson singularly failed to make their own with the V-Rod, and one that will no doubt spawn variants a-plenty in the coming months and years.
Convincing as a stock showroom floor offer it no doubt will be, in sales terms, this first production model is clearly designed to pull a double shift - create sales, yes, but also to create a volume niche (if that's not too much of an oxymoron) that mainlines straight into one of the riding experience spaces where the mind-set of mainstream consumer thinking is headed.
The stock bore, stroke and compression ratio of 'Octane' look like they offer plenty of scope for seeing the stock 104 bhp and 76 ft.lbs torque being taken up a few notches, and the near optimum 60 degree v-twin layout provides the space (and, presumably, the metal) to play with.
The chassis configuration is certainly going to be capable of taking more power as the use of the solid mounted powertrain as a stressed member to tie together the cast-aluminum semi-double-cradle tubular-steel backbones frame has "robust" stamped all over it just as assuredly as the fuel-injected, liquid-cooled DOHV 4-valve per cylinder wet clutch 6-speed configuration screams "tune me".
At under 600 lbs, this first foray into proper temperature control and 21st century engine and gearbox technology can hardly be expected to be Polaris' last.
The much speculated upon new liquid-cooled engine that Harley may (or still may yet not) be about to give some kind of debut to later this year has probably already been ambushed.
If it turns out that, initially, it is only a solution to better pushing their tourers along in straight lines, then fair enough, that isn't what this new Victory engine is about.
But if Milwaukee harbors fantasies that it could be the start of something more strategic, then it may turn out to be too little too late. The pavements of the motorcycle industry are littered with missed opportunities - having had multiple opportunities to be way ahead of the curve (Eric Buell, MV Agusta, Project Nova/Overlord etc), are Harley now likely to be permanently consigned to playing catch-up where "American Muscle" is concerned?

Marzocchi

Suspension maker Marzocchi saved

Italian suspension specialist Marzocchi has been saved from liquidation.
American owner Tenneco (the $8.4 bn turnover owner of Monroe shocks and other automotive interests) had been intending to close the business, but Italian automotive engineer VRM S.p.A., also based near Bologna, has acquired the business for an undisclosed sum in a deal brokered by local government and trade union officials.
VRM is a precision engineering company with chassis component contracts with the likes of BMW, Ducati and MV Agusta among others. The deal does not include Marzocchi's bicycle/MTB suspension programs - those assets were sold to Fox in October 2015. The deal will save some 70 remaining jobs, and reports suggest that production of some of the product lines that Marzocchi produced for major motorcycle OEs will recommence quickly.
Founded in 1949, Marzocchi's core market for motorcycle suspensions has always been 'metric' front ends, but the brand has always been a popular choice with Harley-Davidson aftermarket customizers and builders looking for beefed-up and performance-capable suspensions.
Tenneco acquired Marzocchi in 2008, just as the bottom started to fall out of Marzocchi's market. It is believed that the changes taking place in the suspension industry, with the spread of electronically controlled and adjusted and semi-active electronic suspension systems rapidly becoming a de facto standard requirement for OE product, meant that the huge investment that would have been required to allow Marzocchi to compete became untenable for the American parent company. It is believed that Tenneco was facing a bill of close to $30m for closure of Marzocchi.

Twin Power

Replacement cam chain tensioner shoes and 34-tooth compensator eliminator sprocket

Biker's Choice has added a 34-tooth noise-reducing, slip-eliminating compensator eliminator sprocket to its Twin Power line.

Machined in the USA from 4140 heat-treated steel, it is said to improve starting and starter-life, reduce spinning weight by 4.8 lbs. and fit '07-'15 Big Twin models and 2006 Dynas.
Also seen here, Twin Power's new replacement cam chain tensioner shoes are "economical replacements for the expensive H-D parts and designed to replace only the wear items rather than the complete assembly."

They are made in the USA from a material that is said to be superior to that used in the OEM parts they replace and to offer reduced friction, longer life and be high-temperature resistant.
Sold in pairs, the company says that it is recommended that factory shoes be checked every 10,000 miles and that an installation tool is required to change the tensioner shoes on '99-'06 (except ‘06 Dyna) models (also available from Twin Power).

Rivera Primo

'Game Changer' 32-tooth sprocket

Interesting news from Rivera Primo of a sprocket that works with the OE compensator assembly and fixes the gear ratio as an alternative to eliminating it with a solid sprocket.
The stock sprocket has 34 teeth with a 46-tooth clutch basket sprocket. This gear combination gives relatively poor torque, and to date the solutions have mostly been to replace the stock assembly with a solid sprocket.

However, Rivera Primo's new 'Game Changer' sprocket has 32 teeth which, coupled with the stock basket, hugely improves the torque. The kit includes an innovative "clip-on" adjuster shoe that clips onto the OE adjuster shoe to take up the extra primary chain slack created by the smaller sprocket.
'Game Changer' gear ratio kits are completely bolt-on and work on 2007 and later H-D Touring and Trike models when used with the 2011 and later Screamin' Eagle compensator assembly.

Zodiac

Zodiac Tfi and more

Zodiac "TOP Fuel Injection" adjustable fuel injection tuner

Available for almost any fuel injected Harley, including 2016 Softails, the "TOP Fuel Injection" adjustable fuel injection tuner is a ready to ride plug-in module for stock motorcycles or those fitted with a performance exhaust and/or performance air cleaner. Commonly referred to as a "Stage 1" package, installation does not require any splicing of the wire harness or making other permanent modifications to the bike. It comes pre-loaded with a model-specific base tune file - the unit features three-button individual bike/rider-specific fine-tuning for computer and dyno-free performance maximization. Utilizing the latest in load-based technology in fuel injection performance, it detects the exact amount of load on the engine at any speed and rpm, delivering the right amount of fuel to the engine for optimum performance. Zodiac say this makes the design "superior over fuel injection modules that work off the throttle position, as throttle positions can be the same at different speeds and with different loads on the engine, meaning the same amount of fuel can be injected into the engine in varying conditions."

S&S Evo-style engine packages

As an alternative to complete rebuilds of Evo Big Twin engines, especially if the crankshaft is at the end of its life span, the oil pump is almost gone or the crankcases are cracked, the S&S 1.340cc Evolution style Big Twin engine represents a cost effective alternative - and one that dyno tests have shown to deliver up to 40 percent increased power and an 18 percent torque boost compared to a stock Evo in good condition. If the ignition is still good and the stock Keihin CV or existing stock replacement Mikuni, S&S Super E or other carburetor also still has plenty of miles left in it, then the S&S Evo-style engine can be ordered without carburetor, air cleaner and ignition. These engines come in stock-style natural aluminum or black powder coat finish and are covered by a 1 year (parts only) warranty. If the carb or ignition could also do with a change, they are also available complete with an S&S Super E carburetor, teardrop style air cleaner and S&S Single Fire Super Stock ignition and backed up with a 2-year warranty on parts and labor.

Rivera HED LED spotlight and drive light units

These 4-1/2" spotlight units match perfectly with Rivera's HED LED headlight units and fit in almost any OEM and aftermarket 4-1/2" drive light or spotlight. They give almost three times as much light as normal Halogen bulbs. Sold in sets of two, the units feature Low and High beam, so in fact give you a set of drive lights plus a set of spotlights.

Stealth Super Coils and wires

Accel Stealth Super Coils eliminate the need for ignition wires and a separate coil forever by integrating the coil into the spark plug boot. A beautiful cast aluminum cover that blends with the cooling fins on the cylinder head holds the coil in place and acts as a functional heat sink to pull heat away from the cylinder head. All wiring is hidden in the fins of the head for a clean and custom look. Available in black or silver, that match stock Harley engine colors for a true Stealth look, for 2007 and up Sportsters, 2002 and up fuel injected Touring models and fuel injected Softails (2001 and up) and Dyna's (2004 and up).

Playmaker 7" LED headlight unit

The Playmaker is described as a super bright high and low beam E-approved LED headlight that gives 3 times as much light as common H4 bulb units. The hard coated UV resistant polycarbonate cover and lens is designed to cope with harsh environmental conditions, while the 10-piece 10W LEDs provide "hyper-brightness" - they produce light with a color temperature of 6000-6500K, which is close to daylight. High Beam gives 3800 LM and draws only 3.5A; low beam gives 2800 LM and draws only 2.5A. Available with a choice of chrome or black covered Stepless Thermal Management System, it fits 1994 to present Touring models (except Road Glide), 2009 to present Trike models, and 1991 to present Softail models equipped with a headlamp Nacelle (may also fit other models with a 7" headlight unit). It comes pre-wired and plugs straight into the normal H4 style bulb socket. An adapter cable to the 2014-up style H13 bulb socket is also included.
